As for your question, I'm not sure, but of course I will contribute :) My favorite teacher in high school was gay and he was also the sponsor of the French club, of which I was an officer. I really liked having someone that I could identify with in one regard (plus I loved his sarcastic humor!)
So, I would say that to give your students a wonderful experience, don't be afraid to share yourself with them! Sponsor a club :)

My previous teaching experiences, the students loved me, so I hope the same will happen this year!
hm i wish i learned more about how to write papers in high school because all we did in english class was read. (ie. argumentative papers, mla format, work cited, transitional phrases, etc.) basically, things we needed to know for college. it would also have helped if my high school discussed more about colleges-- and how they exactly run (ie. semesters, quarters, calstate, uc, private, costs, sat, etc.)
i also wished our teachers would have helped us with college applications.

They are good for getting into college, but not much else!
The teachers used to make it sound as if your whole life hinged on your high school performance (both intellectually & socially), putting additional pressure on kids who already felt the weight of the world & growing up on them. The teachers should've emphasized that high school is just 4 yrs of your life & tried to teach them to how to keep things in perspective.
I've taught high school science. Good luck with it. My biggest challenge wasn't with the kids or parents, but the administrators.
