  • its true, they need to develop a new model. The brain is so intense.

  • Maybe they meant it as a pun... such as Affects of Stress could also imply an emotional response...

  • Wow! Really excellent video. Now I have some theories, why I am suffering under a hyperstress-syndrom. I had a more or less severe kind of life event, from that point on, I am permanently alerted, although there is no real reason: Panic disorder.

  • Ah, ignorance is bliss. To Affect is to influence, this is the proper word to use - effect is a noun, affect is a verb. Grammar school taught me well "arrows affected aardvark"

  • af·fect 1 (-fkt)

    tr.v. af·fect·ed, af·fect·ing, af·fects

    1. To have an influence on or effect a change in: Example: Inflation affects the buying power of the dollar.

I see nothing wrong with the use of Affect in ths title.

  • @medic3452

It's being used as a noun, not a verb. Affect as a noun means an emotion or emotional response. The title is not necessarily an error.

  • I think It's not deliberate, the full title is 'how stress affects the brain and body', so it is about the effects of stress. If it is meant as a wordplay on affect (feeling), it isn't working, it just makes them look stupid.

  • I'm sure you meant the EFFECTS of stress.

  • This man reminds of Brent Spiner. And he's just as smart.

  • Thanks for uploading this. The title of this video should use the word "Effects" not "Affects" ;-)

  • You are deff correct, but once the damage is done and depression sets in there is deff a biological change cause after the issue is addressed it doesn't just magically disappear

  • This is Youtube!!! Where the hell is the five minute version of this video???

  • THANKS SO MUCH

  • Lol @ the wrong use of 'affect' in title.

  • @outofdashdwz lol @ idiots like you not understanding the meaning of affect in the title.

    Here's a clue for you:

    5. (Psychiatry) An expressed or observed emotional response.

  • @miguelat80 The hardest thing about understanding a foreign language is knowing when the speaker is using the wrong usage intentionally.

  • effects*

  • Allow unlimited Abundance to come into your life from this moment forard...

  • If what your doing isn't helping you. Try what I have "Jesus". 100% success rate.

    Bless you.

  • @TheIggy457 didnt work for me... or anyone in my family. should we move up to Barney instead?

  • I'm 18 and I've got white facial hairs-they're not the fine ones that you have all over your body, they're exactly the same as my normal facial hair only they're completely white, instead of black. Could this be caused by stress?

  • @Terrra91 I hear ya I think it's a mix of both Hereditary and Stress. I've had a few white strands on my head for the last 2 years since 21 and I do have a tendency to worry alot, also y Uncle at 18 started to go white as well and he's always stressed so it's probably both

  • Not sure if anyone noticed or commented on this yet, but the title _should_ read "The Effects of Stress" as opposed to "The Affects of Stress," which is meaningless.

  • @deviat3 Pretty sure that was intentional. Play on words. "Affect" refers to emotion. So basically how stress effects emotion.

  • @deviat3 ]

Always a lot of trouble differentiating effects and affects for a lot of people.

You are right. But educated people can easily notice the wrong usage. Sounds the same? English is my second language.

  • @deviat3 Little more clearly than others explained this:

    5. (Psychiatry) An expressed or observed emotional response.

Therefore this video could also be titled: "The expressed or observed emotional response of Stress". Quite meaningful.

  • Warning to neuroscientists: this lecture is dumbed down

  • @dendryite

Always a lot of trouble differentiating effects and affects for a lot of people.

  • I'm an artist, my life is god's gift to you. I study nature both aesthetically and intellectually. Some cases of depression (including my own) have mainly biological causes. When you feel like learning you can google doctor Thierry Hertoghe and when you want to contribute to the world you can feed me strawberries and lick my pussy.

  • "Dr. Owen Wolkowitz . . . explores the biological connection between stress and depression."

    Dear Dr. Wolkowitz,

A study of brain cells is unable to provide a practical, coherent and cohesive understanding of human behavior, stress or depression.

Your study of the underlying law of nature, however, will provide such an understanding.

    Google it, to start.

    Respectfully yours,

  • Think of the underlying law of nature. The way of all things.

Consider its astounding inferences and implications.

The single, underlying law ... of nature! Not merely of physics, chemistry, psychology, biology, etc., but of all known fields of inquiry. The law we can all relate to, identify, understand and apply.

Ask yourself. What is the underlying law of nature?

Delight in the question. Have fun in the process of finding the answer firsthand for yourself.

    Google it, as a start.

  • you wouldn't understand the nature of my ass if I was rubbing it on your crotch, depression can be a physical disease with biological causes. Go read a book, get a degree

  • your mind, (by which I think you mean consciousness or personality) is a culmination of the activities of the brain. Scientists don't study metaphors. Go dissect a human, grab me out the mind, I think it's right under the soul. Fry 'em up lets see what they taste like. I think everything that exists should be lickable

  • @Ecdysiast96

How about making a useful contribution?

Better still, how about making the most useful contribution you conceivably can. That would give that powerful mind of yours something to chew on, wouldn't it?

    Regards.

  • I'm shocked on how little we know about the mind. So much is energy is directed to the brain and synapses but little investigation goes to this phenomena of the mind. Some scientists don't even acknowledge existence of the mind these days, there was a more pronounced interest in the 60's.

  • @MTspacevideo

    You are exactly right.

"Some scientists don't even acknowledge existence of the mind these days, ..."

And have a look at Ecdysiast96's post above yours. It contains zero intelligent content. It makes not the slightest useful contribution while attempting to make your perfectly insightful post seem off beat.

    Regards.

  • great talk, thanks for posting

  • excellent work!

  • hmmcant seem to find a guy who isnt a coward

  • good clear lecturer! very good - so the brain is like a semiconductor...lol

  • EFFECTS, EFFECTS, EFFECTS...... got it?

To AFFECT is the verb, not the noun*. For a University channel this kind of error is unforgivable.

*Actually, there IS a verb to effect, meaning to cause, but that's irrelevant here.

  • I noticed that too, weird, lol.

  • @DrZenith I know, that's so annoying. Unless they mean "affects" as in facial expressions, but I doubt it.

  • I'm sure the person who posted to youtube made the mistake

  • Affect can also be a noun, in the sense of an emotional or emotional expression. "He had a flat affect." In this regard, the title could *almost* be right, but clearly the title maker intended "effects" (as a plural noun).

  • Treat the stress not the depression. Depression is a symptom not a disease.

  • @jskinner Absolutely. Additionally, this whole discussion is fucking stupid. Knowing the biologic "reasons" for depression doesn't solve a damn thing. And drugs do nothing but mask the real issues and create new ones.

  • @jrippz The title doesn't say "reasons", it says "affects" of depression TO the brain and to the resty of the body.

  • Yeah, but the 'reasons' are part of this discussion. And the "effects", in their terms, are equally useless. Besides, it's pretty fucking obvious what the effects of depression are- you don't need to know the chemical happenings of it. Unless, of course, you're planning on making some nasty drug.

Btw, I only watched ten minutes of this, so I'm assuming that's all they're talking about. And, also, you're a moronic douchebag.

  • I agree with skinner. However, when ppl are in severe, persistent depression, they may ride it out, but often it is too hard to release all the stressors and the effects and the disabling of motivation by themselves. We don't see thousands of people throwing off depression, do we? I am totally for going to the source of the problem(s). A person can go to therapy and take meds conjointly, the meds helping the person to get to/do therapy and for mood brightening for daily life. Meds are temporary.

  • @jrippz If you watched only ten minutes, how can you speak for the part that you didn't watch? The professor would agree that this is only theory. What he is after is developing better theories. Sometimes, the insights have helpful, practical applications.

I haven't had my IQ taken, but I do have a University doctorate. I still say that reasons are only brushed over here and are not the point. I watched the whole presentation.

  • @aamusc Yeah, well further proof that a University doctorate, and whatever degrees that these guys have, means jack shit. And, yeah, I wasn't wrong about what the rest video is about. These "theories" are absolutely useless. Psychiatry shouldn't even exist, except for maybe the mentally handicaped. It's a fucking psuedo-science. And then there's pyschology- which is in its absolute infancy. It's just a mess. None of these people are "doctors" or "professors".

  • If the talk contributes anything, it shows that there is an immense variety in kinds of depression. It is not just one, generic thing, which has a bearing on effective treatment. I agree that in most examples, causes and stressors ARE described as you say, but effects and the understanding of them are discussed, the results of studies. It will be interesting & great to see your talents make far better contributions to the welfare of society and people than what is portrayed here. Please do.

  • @aamusc The fact that you're pointing out the fact that there are 'different kinds of depression' just goes to show whatever you've been taught has been useless and elementary at best. And, again, depression itself is not what is treated. Depression, as mentioned by that other guy, is a symptom- not the actual problem. The "treatment" needs to target the reasons behind the sufferer's anxiety(& the many stemming problems) through psychological means. THAT, very simply put, is how it's done.

  • if it wasn't for university doctorates you would not have a computer to express your crap with.

  • @emperorzong Because we all know that psychiatry professors make computers. Fucking moron.

  • You need to see a psychiatrist!

  • @emperorzong Yeah, you're right- I need to see one, and then I need to punch him in the face. Imagine if you were an eagle, but you were watching the world be run by deformed chickens. You'd get pretty frustrated too! Especially when these deformed chickens are semi-indirectly causing some people's deaths with their drugs.

  • they have saved more than have died.

  • @emperorzong Yeah, and that's why society and the people they've "saved" are just the picture of happiness and passion. I've known plenty of "saved" people, and the drugs (that they're now dependent on) can make them a shell of their true selves. And those are the better cases. Some of these drugs cause terrible physical side effects, and sometimes will lead to more mental problems- which sometimes leads to suicide. You love people spoon-feeding you conventional bullshit, don't you?

  • One must be careful not to diagnose the angry rebellious teenager with narcissistic personality disorder. Often all they need is a good shag.

    Peace.

    P.S Anecdotal evidence isn't scientific.

  • @emperorzong How about I shag your overweight mother, you obnoxious prick? You want know what's unscientific? Psychiatry and its ass load of theories. You want to know who's narcissistic? Psychiatrists. They treat people like subhuman test subjects. Everyone knows that, at least. Oh and I just looked at your page and noticed you have a "critical thinking" video favorited. All I can say is 'Wow'. Way to put that to good use, you corny, douchey, fruity, fuck turd sheep.

    PEACE.

    P.S. You're gay.

  • The narcissist believes they are superior in many aspects of life. They often have the delusion that they know more than qualified experts. Being cowards they can't admit they might be inferior in some subjects, resulting in rage expressed through obscene words, and violence towards those who are weaker. It is rare the narcissist is co-morbid with Hebephilia. Such individuals are a menace to society. They are usually bigots with homophobic tendencies to hide their own homosexuality.

  • @emperorzong Oh, and did you just call me a homophobic closet homosexual bigot with hebephelia?? WOW. Great deduction skills there, chief. That spiel of yours was very impressive.

  • easy peasy

  • @emperorzong I wasted my time. I really hope you get hit by a car or something.

  • you are a waste of time.

    Peace

  • @emperorzong I can't believe I argued with such a pathetic brat.

  • Argue?

  • @jskinner

that would mean a bilion less tablets of Prozac prescribed per month. Prozac sales create jobs, which in turn support families.

You're not against FAMILY, are you?.

  • @YERaFUGNmoron MANY things create jobs and effect families, that doesn't make them correct. Guns create jobs, which in turn support families, they also take lives and effect families. Heroin, which was prescribed by doctors before it was made illegal, it created jobs for that period of time, and supported families. Heroin kills people, which also effects families.

I'm not stating my stance on guns/heroin, I'm giving you an example of why your argument is absolutely ridiculous.

  • @jskinner Get what, after billions spent on research and drug development he tells us drugs don't actually work, so what then, let's make up another ridiculous theory, that totally ignores people's emotional lives and history, in order to sell even more drugs. Goes to show the only truly delusional are the psychiatrists.

  • @jskinner you are ignorant. depression is indeed a disease. you have never suffered from clinical depression if you think otherwise.

  • Depression tends to come along when you find yourself doing simple, repetitive detail work under the supervision of abusive low-level management who hate themselves and can only find pleasure by working longer hours and finding creative ways to torture the few minds they oversee without it being detected. And having a lot of assholes in your family can bring out depression around the holiday season. Nothing biological there, except the relationship to these assholes.

  • j24utube - truer words were never spoken. I was just thinking "if it weren't for these arseholes..."

  • We all deal with assholes. The question is HOW you deal with them and how much of your self worth you allow them to control. It may also be helpful to develop some tools to find alternatives - education, a different job, working for yourself where you can be your own asshole, etc.

  • Perhaps there's a market for some lectures on how to deal these assholes. Yes education and hard work can greatly reduce the affect these people can have on you, but the flip side to that coin is your success only angers the assholes even more, especially around the holidays when you are forced to smile at them.

  • Comment removed

  • @j24utube been there, experienced that... not fun

  • @j24utube absolutely right'''

  • I think it is a brilliant video program, it demonstrated the depression issue in a very scientist view. Could we show more respect to it?Sould we show some respect to Science? Thank you.

  • @muzzleray agreed

  • thank you for sharing

  • EFFECTS not Affects!

  • Ha! and these are the highly educated among us?

  • It should be noted that the people who actually made the video used the word correctly. The error was most likely made by someone else, probably in a hurry to get the video posted to their YouTube channel.

  • we know. we're just messing around. well, i know and i am just messing around. i assume

    falcoperegrinus82 is too

  • affect is potential, effect is consequence, correct me if I am wrong
