Damn. Does anyone else watch this and wonder if they're dreaming? You can listen to music every minute of your life and still be floored by this magic.
Billy kilson flawlessly, outer-dimensionnally driving, gracefully unleashing the full True Power of the Drums, and then following, accompanying, emphasizing...
And Dave Holland smiling, simply enjoying himself, in pure beauty...
If you the followed the phrase its 4 bars of 4/4.. I think what makes it hard is that there is a lot of rhythmic displacement in the melody.. some of the phrases start on 2nd or 3rd or 4th beat, and it's really to mistake that as the 1... but I think it's 4/4 all the way thrugh
its a phrase of 16 beats obviously but if you try keeping a straight 4/4 through the whole thing it doesnt make sense with where billy kilson(drummer) is placing the beat at least for the opening melody. as far as the part after the solos i don't know.
I did a transcription of this tune for class. If you listen to the bass line, Dave plays a bar of 4, and four bars of three. I'm pretty sure the melody was written along this form as well. It all lines up very nicely.
That's what I thought too, and that's what I meant when I said that the phrases may be displaced. I am guessing chart is written 4/4 the entire time with the phrases starting in different part of the beat... kind of like the middle section Peri-Scope, but a lot more complicated. You don't have to write it in different meter, and I am guessing at their level they can easily notice the implied rhythm by playing the score.
I think I got it.. like jasennett said the phrasing on the first part is 1 bar of 4/4 and 4 bar of 3/4... and the next phrase is in 6+6+4 the sax/trombone unison part is 6+3+3+4.. all the phrases add up to 16 beats or 4 bars of 4/4. So I guess the score is written in 4/4 and all the other timing are implied within 4/4... at least that's my best guess.
i'm sorry but you can hear it still subdivided into 3, its 4+6+6. just cuz it happens to fall back into palce if you count 4/4 does not make it 4/4. the same could be said about 3/4 really. it'll eventually end back up to 4/4 (just 4 measures of 3/4)
Sometimes I think that people like these are not human..
Look at 2:20..Potter and Eubanks are coming from a totally intricated simoltaneous solo, but they catch the perfect tempo of the main theme, as it was the most simply thing in the world..
Bass and Vibes are metronomics, don't lose a beat...
It's unbelievable...for me, they're from another world...
@JaimeSax99 I don't mean to be rude, but Billy Kilson's drum roll (very obvious cue) basically said "we're done". Anyone involved in any decent level of jazz improv should recognize this.
It cool how much chemistry between Chris Potter and Robin Eubanks and how Dave Holland and the drummer easily hold it all down...who is the drummer anyways, he is phenominal especially from 2 25-2 35
generally, Nate Smith tours w/ Dave Holland w/ the exception of the Big Band. This is Billy Killson

No matter what angle you come from, Chris Potter is the winner in this lineup.

You think you've heard enough of greatness for a while and... Baam! Dave Holland & Band hits you with the Groove... the Essence of the Groove...
Then you just sit back and enjoy, in pure astonishment...
And then you cry, and wonder: Where, when does the magic stop?
And then you realize: Never.
Once you let go and Open Your Eyes, it just keeps on flowing...
On, and on, and on, and on...
Musical alchemists at work, tearing through the limitations of our Minds...

Which bit? You could take your pick, quite a few changes.

most of it seems like its 4/4 and then 4 bars of 3/4 and it just keeps repeating that pattern. i think at least =p

Pretty much I'd say, maybe 6/4 at times, but it does change.

@SoaringTrumpet In the original comment's defense, Kilson had been comping the motif the whole time... it was hardly an "obvious cue"
