The problem is if you buy physical gold you can't goto the store and buy groceries and pay for them with gold bars. The cashier would just laugh at you. However having physical gold is great, but not exactly practical for daily use unfortunately.

If I was a grocery cashier and someone came up and tried to pay in gold bars, I'd fucking take the gold bars and pay for the stuff with cash out of my own pocket. Because a gold bar is worth or will be many times over in cash than whatever the cost of the groceries are.

Someone tried it once, a drive thru IIRC. To test people about gold. The person refused the gold coin for whatever its denomination to pay and the guy said to her "You don't want..$1500?"

I'm not doubting you, I know for a fact you are right. I work at McDonalds, and as greedy as the company is they wouldn't have a clue how to accept a gold bar. Now the gold Dollars they will accept because they actually have a face value on them. I believe gold bars actually do also, but I'm not rich enough to have any. Funny, they would have no clue what an ounce of gold was worth if you handed them a gold bar for payment, the look they would give and their reaction would be pretty amusing though I'm sure.
