You know what you could do instead of throwing them away to a landfill or burning them? Rip them up, and throw them in a recycling bin. Or, if you're gonna burn them, offer them up for free first. If you told people that the books would be burned if they weren't taken, people would (more than likely) line up to take the books home, regardless of book quality.
This is silly...you don't have to put them in a Landfill....just bury them just below surface level, or even put them in the woods, just lying around on the ground. They would "Degrade" the same as fallen trees would.
After a few months or so, they would be degraded to dirt!
Lol, I'm almost afraid to comment, lest I should be subject to Bythric's forked tongue. It reminds me of the old testaments propaganda; "believe as I believe, or I'll tell you why you're wrong! No opinion shall exsist outside of mine!" Lol, good luck with that.. and with your "book burning for education" theory..
i couldn't exactly hear what they said, so i basically turned my volume off, so i have no clue why they're doing this, but its sad to see those books burn, considering i'm a big bookworm, when they could have been donated...
Thats what they explain they're burning the books because they're at the point of damage charities won't take them and rather then leave them to rot in a landfill they burn them.
Ooooh, so they're not burning them because they're religious nuts, they're burning them because they're just old and in bad condition. Well I guess that's more forgivable, although with the lame audio quality (too much treble and volume level is way too low) I couldn't actually tell -that- is why they were doing it.
I listened the comments, am an openminded person, hopefully, but still find this repugnant in every way posible. If done as fun somehow by teens, or as social artsy happening, allright, but it seems you have some sort of BS escape theory about it that just cover your lack of understanding of mankind symbolism of The Book and The Knowldge, that even Hitler and Mao and other notoriusly autodafe guys in fact HAD! They understood at least what they were defiantly doing.
Apart from the rambling incoherency of your comment (what's an escape theory? And autodafe?) you are clearly not an open minded person, and why do you find it acceptable to burn books as a "social artsy happening" but feel entitled to condemn our event, which was exactly that, but with a message about recycling attached to it? People whose minds are as closed as yours present far more of a threat to freedom than someone who burns a few knackered/damaged old paperbacks to get rid of them.
Autodafe is burning at stake people like Giordano Bruno or Miguel Servet. Used also for burning books. Look, dude, if you want to send a message about recycle why didn't you just recycled them. I cant see how wasting them thru fire means "recycle".
This just shows precisely that you are not in the least bit open minded. If you'd bothered to listen to the whole thing you'd have seen that the reason we staged this event was to highlight the fact that there are no recycling facilities in our area, but you clearly didn't listen, and instead decided to project your own twisted interpretation of our motives and condemn our event as "repugnant in every way possible". Don't ever describe yourself as open minded, you aren't.
Ooooh what about a LARGE VERY TALL steal sculpture? In the form of a torch then a cup or a artistic platform at the bottom to hold stacks and stacks of books- then have an annual Burning !
If you'd bothered to read my previous comments you'd see that we did this to raise the issue that the recycling facilities in rural Scotland are inadequate, so that we could force local government to address the problem that they don't do enough in this area.
And yes, we have heard of recycling in Scotland. Thanks for asking though.
It was actually a pretty interesting idea, I do agree in some way....if the book is not a first edition or is badly injured, or unvalueable, or has information that is out of date...then it would make sense to recycle them in some way or another, or burn them...yet I would rather recycle the material, and not use it for fuel...
indeed my this is tha fact that english is fra from my mogrammer and spellingas poor, but the reason forther tounge. In other words im a Dane. You comparison with trains was not really an epiphany. well, I dont know about scotland, but i my country we care about the enviornment and hence we have recycling stations where we can place paper and wood and scarp metal and all sort of other things.
Therefore we can use the trash to something constructive... I dont suppose you burn all your old newspapers or old computers too, do you? and if you dont, what _do_ you do with it?
Jesus Christ, listen to what I'm saying in this film you idiot. The whole point of doing this was to raise awareness of the fact that damaged books are a potential source of fuel which at the moment is being dumped in landfill sites.
hmm. constructive. burning books is really a progressive step for mankind... when was the last time we saw a highly progressive socail development like this - oh yeah, I remember, IT WAS IN NAZI GERMANY! litterature is for reading, and is you are too imbicil to do that, pass the books on to someone who has a usefull purpose with them... I do see the fun, but use your notes or something like that. burning books is just wrong.
Not sure you've read a great deal of "litterature", but you're absolutely correct I "are too imbicil" to read them. Thanks for your "usefull" advice. Moron.

never heard of recycling in scotland?
In Austria we collect paper and it gets remade into recycling paper used for school books and toilet paper and such stuff...
