  • No, that is wrong. The sentence 'Ich bin ein Berliner' is totally correct. JFK said it in the right way - in meaning and more or less in pronunciation.

In order to guard against misunderstandings in german the word 'Berliner' can be understood as a donut. But in other regions and not in Berlin. Here the right word is 'Krapfen'.

The citizens of Berlin get JFKs point totally. In the next scene you can hear them laugh, because JFK says thank you to the translator for translating the sentence twice

  • do you know who was the greatest marmelade-eater in the world?

  • Hi :3

Commented on some videos of yours already now...

And I would really suggest you to stop trying to teach someone something thats not quite right! I guess every german would understand what you said... and it might help some americans to pronounce it better... but its still not really perfect... so I dont see any point in this video.

And I am asking myself... why you're trying to teach some guys on the net how to pronounce your youtube nick? x_x

thats like me trying to teach s.o. english x:

  • doppelkinn

  • your pronunciation actually is quite alright, but it would be a real improvement if you could, as so many have pointed out, make the LI in BER-LI-NER a looong vowel, apposed to your suggestion of spelling out the pronunciaton with "lynn", a better help would be the word "lean" as in "to lean on something", BEAR-LEAN-ER

  • U fuckinly look like a "berliner" !!!

  • True! Berliner has two meanings:

    a. Citizen of the city of Berlin

    b. German donut with jelly inside.

So Kennedy didn't make a mistake.

You Americans eat Hamburgers, and in germany we have the City of Hamburg. So it could possibly happen that you meet a German, who says

"I am a Hamburger" (Ich bin ein Hamburger)

  • @Lintflas IT´S NOT A DONUT WITH JELLY INSIDE!!!! THERE IS NO HOLE IN A BERLINER!! xD

  • big mc

    du fette sau

  • BUT YOU LOOK LIKE A JELLY DOUGHNUT! A VERY FAT JELLY DOUGHNUT!

  • Ich bin ein Hamburger

  • wow sooooo fat

  • of course u are not but u are fat !!!

try losing the american accent first.

aber ich frage mich was soll das:

Eek bin kine burrlynner?!?!? Wasn das für Quatsch! Thats stupid stuff ^^

  • Ich bin Sachse! ;D

  • Ich bin nicht berliner?

    Doesnt that work too?

  • "burr-lyyyyner" its pronounced berliiiiner. not berlinner.

  • Wie lang studierst du schon die Deutsche Sprache?

Ich hab auch schon von Leuten gehört die deutsch im Ausland als Ausländer gelernt haben8Jahrelang) und als diese in D waren, haben sie kläglich versagt...du bist nur eine weitere Bestätigung...

  • „Die deutsche Sprache sollte sanft und ehrfurchtsvoll zu den toten Sprachen abgelegt werden, denn nur die Toten haben die Zeit, diese Sprache zu lernen.

    -Mark Twain

  • Both can be said. "Ich bin Berliner" und "Ich bin ein Berliner" . The second version puts a little bit more stress on the fact that the person is from Berlin and not from somewhere else. Like if someone would ask an US-Citizen whether he an European, he would probably say " I am an American" and not just " I am American". This kind of Donuts are named in many different ways all over Germany - Pfannkuchen, Krapfen,Kreppel, Puffel, Berliner.... Kennedy learned the sentence also my a German.

  • wtf

  • Hey!

Real cool videom you're german is good too!

But Kennedys speech was at the Rathaus (Town Hall) Schöneberg!

Ronald Reagan spoke at the gate

  • Ich bin ein Berliner!

  • Cool! :)

  • hahahaha....this is great. i enjoy laughter therapy before bed. :)

  • Hey, nice again :)

But you shouldn't say belynner, it's better to say Berlyyyner :D strech the yy more :) Ant don't use duble "n". Take the "n" schorter :D

But it's ok, it sounds just a little bit american :D

  • I knew this story, but you explain it very well. As a fan of berlin & kennedy, I really appreciate your interests...are you really learning german? It's a hard language.

    auf veidezein!

  • Yeah, I'm taking German in college. Thanks for your kind words and support! Auf Wiedersehen!

  • Durn...I was pretty sure I'd spelled that wrong. I've never studied German myself, but it's the language my grandmother used to swear in when I was little. Also, they have marvelous words for philosophical concepts that cannot be translated, like gestalt and zeitgeist and leibenraum...ok, that's pretty much the end of my German...maybe you'll make some instructional videos about the stuff you're learning?

  • Heh. That's ok. Spelling is overrated. ;) Yeah, I was thinking about trying to boost my vocabulary by learning one new German word per day, so I was thinking about sharing the new words each day with a video! Since you mentioned it...I think I'll try making some instructional stuff. Good idea. Thanks!

  • I knew it was german of some sort.

  • jelly doughnut 0_o hahaha

  • and Ich = Je....

  • For some reason the video cuts off at the end...at least when I try to view it on youtube. Sorry. It is okay if you pronounce my name wrong. I don't mind at all. :)
