I absolutely love watching this video. I view it each time before I "try" to make rotis. Each time I watch I see a little extra. Granny makes it seem so easy and effortless; which obviously for her it is, after so much experience.Your Granny is my inspiration to making the perfect roti!.Thanks for posting. If you have time I think you should video her making something else.
@DailyBrusher yes that is what she appears to be doing ... flatten and again roll it out into circular shape ... one she already rolled is already baking on tava ... after first rolling out she puts clarified butter (ghee) on surface and then cuts with knife and rolls into cone shape and then flattens and rolls out again. I too saw this first time. We Gujaratis dont put ghee while rolling. We put it after baking is done. Other than that this process seems identical.
@DailyBrusher Sorry I understood your post after I posted a comment. She is not rolling again after baking. The rolling is done twice without any baking in between. So you are wrong in thinking that once cooked it will be rolled again. The rolling is done like I said in my first post. That is: first roll, then apply ghee and cut one radius length with knife and roll in conical shape. You get a layered cone. Flatten it and roll again into circle shape. And then bake. Hope you get it.
nice technique, thank nani for sharing. Does she have any tips on how to make it round? Mine always comes out in weird shapes :S Please let me know. Thanks :)
PPl u do not put baking soda in ROTI WTF who does that she does not use baking soda that is hwo u make roti guyanese ppl no offence u ugys can't make ROTI my bad but it is true sorry to say that and i said NO OFFENCE
@princeofdarkkness oh and guyanese ppl dont put baking soda in their roti...educate yourself on internation dishes before you decide to bash other ppls culture...they put baking powder.
Nice work, we liked your video very much so we embedded it on ChefCommons . com w/ link back and reference to Youtube. (Let us know if you don't wish for it to be featured)
Thank you for posting. Unless you see it made, the recipe makes little sense, the recipe I tried said 'coil and roll with a hole ing the top' ah! Now I see what it means.
I saw this video tonight and actually tried out making a chapatti from the lessons of making roti from Nanimaa.. It was an great and awsome roti that I ate, away from Home...... Nanimaa aur ghar ki yaad aa gayi :(
what was the point of cutting it in half and rolling it up and then smashing it into a ball and then rolling the pin over it?

The Dough was prepared in an electric doughmaker. Basically keep adding water to the whole wheat atta till it softens into a smooth dough.
