Its important to point out that while many voted against MLK day because of racism, others voted against it because of the character problems of MLK. MLK frequently cheated on his wife (despite being a "reverend") and plagiarized his doctoral thesis and his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. But there were issues about him as a person that could justify voting against the holiday.

Between 1983 to 93 there was more then ten bills that had to be passed to make Dr. Kings holiday happen and JOHN MCCAIN voted against each and every one of them. Now he would like you to be stupid enough to vote for him. Will my fellow African Americans, Are you? Will you be white washed enough to vote yourself into harder times then you have now. I have two great uncles that was in world war 2 that got lynched when they got back home from the war because whites was scared of a black hero.

Also I want to point out in my message below I'm not saying those were the reasons why McCain voted against it. I'm not a supporter of him so I don't know why he did. Just saying that MLK did some heroic things, but he's only human and did some objectionable things.

Its important to point out that while many voted against MLK day because of racism, others voted against it because of the character problems of MLK. MLK frequently cheated on his wife (despite being a "reverend") and plagiarized his doctoral thesis and his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve a holiday, because what he did for civil rights makes him a hero in my mind. But there were issues about him as a person that could justify voting against the holiday.

I do have mixed feelings about this, but more so, McCain was full well old enough to know how wrong it was to vote against a holiday for MLK. I'd like to hear his reasoning as to why he voted against it.

McCain voted against the holiday because Arizona's Gov. and many of it's residents were opposed (for racist reasons).
The NFL would not have allowed the state to host the Super Bowl unless the fed. holiday was passed...money talks.

It's sad that money and greed are often the reason why politicians and others do what they do. Reagan also wasn't all too eager to make MLK's birthday a national holiday. McCain didn't make a mistake, he made a intentional choice to vote against a MLK holiday in Arizona. I still want him to come out and speak honestly as to why he voted against. If he thought he heard booing the other day, he'd really hear booing for that. Lots of people still don't like MLK, and McCain is probably one of them.

Unfortunately, there are many people who couldn't care less for what MLK preached. And, yet others only know of the simplified, dumbed-down ICON of MLK, the one seen in McDonald's commercials. MLK has been whittled into a soundbite from one speech -- I Have a Dream. He was a much more complex person than most people seem to know. I see the hypocrisy of many Christians today, who claim to be followers of Christ, but yet they don't believe and act as he does. They're very close-minded.

Even almost a decade after he voted against MLK's federal holliday, he took many actions against it.
I remember he also admitted he didn't have the courage to apologize for MLK in a particular South Carolina primary when presented with a prime opportunity to do so(?).
He also had embarrassing flip-flops on the confederate flag.
