I think that this scene is so romantic; and, it also hits a place in my heart. When I went off into the US Navy, I, too, left a lovely girlfriend behind. At the time, I felt little, at best; but, in retrospect, it's not until I began to realize where I'd placed myself, and, then, I really began to miss home, and, my girlfriend. Once you've done this, this scene will always mean something of great sentimentality that brings back bittersweet memories. Most veterans, anywhere, should relate.
@jgyll8mt I do love this scene. It's simply brilliant. Back in the late 80's, I didn't understand it, today it's IRAQ/AFGANISTAN and even there we are not fighting a war but occupying a country,. for reasons I no longer understand. Thanks for your comment and who over posted this scene. PS, Tom Cruise sucks as an actor. Freak'n good looks has served him well.
Brilliant scene from a great film. It's not an 'anti-war' or 'anti-government/patriotism/family' film, it just asks you to think about those topics in the context of the Vietnam war during the 60's. It's also so timely now, which seems to enrage people...
a scene with an acute message...he had to go to the prom to say goodbye to her...but at the same time confused..he was in a bind...had to sacrafice something in the process..so he turned to a last resort...God..and hard as it is if you don't believe in Him makes it even more confusing..but if you don't..then you don't believe in yourself..so a real bind that is...it happens..so what do you do...
does anyone know who sings this specific version of Moon River? it's my favorite version but i can't figure out the singer/band

Tom Cruise is at the top of his game in what is probably the greatest movie he'll ever be in.

Too bad he got fooled by capitalists and went to war.
He should have stayed home and date her.
