The relationship between the characters are unclear...as a child it didn't make any difference to me and was unnoticed...but can anyone understand the relationship between Jathro and Jed? Jed calls him his nephew, but Jethro’s mother is called cousin ...so and so by Jed. If that's the case, that would make Jathro.... Jed's first cousin and not nephew. Plus, one can't tell the relationship between Jed and granny. Is it his mother, or grandmother on father or mother side? She's his Mother in law.
@WilsonBen11 You don't know much about the Ozarks, do you? You're thinking so hard you're missing the joke. The answer to the question "How are they related?" is "That's right, they are." Understanding the kinship of European royalty is a breeze by comparison. For a primer I suggest Dorothy Shay, "The Park Avenue Hillbilly", especially "(Your Pa's Your) Uncle Fudd" (although I can't find that particular recording of hers on YouTube), or writer Joan Hess's Maggody series from your local library.
I love pilots b/c they reveal the producers' orig. conception for the show. That tends to be the best-thought-out and authentic characterization. They introduce all the major characters and often give them a backstory. There are cool differences form the "production" versions, too -- here, Granny is rougher than she is later, Elly has more to say, and Jethro is a grinning idiot instead of just a plain one. Aunt Pearl is a real plot driver. Fantastic series, I remember it fondly.
I liked this episode, the 2nd episode titled "Getting Settled" the premise was like the movie when Jane Hathaway thought The Clampett were the housekeeping staff and not the owners.
