I agree with jlsumme--that circle looks like some sort of edger mark, which is what makes me feel that it may have been a defective coating. They can do the same thing if one isn't careful with the heat or chemicals (facial oils, certain cleaners, sometimes fabric softener residue in clothes or cloths, soaps with lotions, etc.), but that circle that you can see in the middle there really, really makes me think these were defective. Hope your experience was better with your new pair!
@mewfables, you missed the point of my comment. When we buy car, we are given a manual that says when to expect parts like filters and pad to need replacing, when we buy processed foods we are told when to expect it to go bad. With glasses we are not told that the coating will breakdown. My point was not to debate the sensibilty of applying to coating, its the failure to disclaim its limitations.

Uncoated plastic doesn't have good optical properties, that's why you can't (and don't want to) get uncoated plastic. My guess is, yours wasn't applied very well, so it started coming off - of course you could expect it to do so eventually, but not in the first 3 months.
Actually CR-39 plastic has just as good if not better optical properties than poly, aspheric poly and hi index plastic, coated or not. The downside is it's thickness.
The life span of glass is indefinate and polycarbonate is over 80 year. It's the scratch coat that has the 2 years life span. My optometrist never explained that my glasses would self destruct in 2 years. Did yours?
The fact that you cannot purchase lens without it is an conspiracy. It's the retailers way making sure that you spend more $. They found a way to put an expiration date on an item that could last a life time, and they are selling it to you as an upgrade.
@AlexHunley Polycarbonate lenses collect scratches extremely easily without that coating--it is simply a material property of polycarbonate: high impact resistance but very low scratch resistance. Adding a scratch-resistant coating to a lens that otherwise has superior optical properties is sensible. Lenses and frames are rarely, if ever, a lifetime purchase.
anyhow...you are supposed to get a new Rx every year. Would you be upset if the pills you take are degraded after a year? Even more would you take pills you have had in your cabinet for five years? Anti-reflective coating is great but not suggested for people who aren't diligent about cleaning their glasses properly and keeping them away from chemicals like hairspray etc.
Well did you wipe your eyeglasses corectly it seems you did not sense they look that way. I have had glasses for a long time and yes i have anti scrath and anti glare which make them even more sensetive so ofcourse you did something wrong. It seems you wiped in a circular motion or with a paper towel or something along those lines
That circle looks like where they blocked up the lens in the edger and maybe forgot to put the ar sticker on, pressure and stress on that circle during edging.
I got my lenses replaced with crown glass lenses. No coatings and it is tougher than plastic and scratches can be repaired. The drawback is they are slightly heavier than plastic and can shatter when dropped. They are so much cheaper than plastic lenses.
You can easily remove all of the scratch resistant and/or anti-glare coatings by applying a product called "Amour Etch" found at craft stores like Michael's for approx. $12.
********CAUTION: only works on PLASTIC lens - NOT GLASS lens********
Steps: 1. Apply on lens (thick) 2. Let stand 5 min. 3. rinse well with water and soap 4. Repeat if needed (usually takes 2-3 treatments) Glasses will be clear and look brand new !!! Do NOT use on GLASS lens - Only PLASTIC lens. Enjoy seeing -

The life time of lenses is about 1-2 years. Do you keep your tires for 10 years and complain when the tread wears off? Come on now!
