Actually, the reason they unfurled this sign was because a Chinese Catholic priest was arrested and is still in prison for displaying the banner a few years ago. It was in his honor that they chose this banner. And when you are confronted by a government who officially denies the existence of God, the message is quite appropriate.

It doesn't give the ordinary Chinese a reason to protest the arrest of this priest, nor does it compel the government to change their actions.
