  • I love everyone in this revue. But especially Carol.

  • i saw this at music box theatre, her skirt actually came down that night, what she did, her improv, makes her the funniest woman ever....next to Madeline Kahn, true genius

  • Burnett's interpretation is extremely moving and accessible, and takes this song to a different level.

  • Love this interpretation of this sad song. Burnett makes you understand the lonliness and desperation of these women.

  • Her top is fabulous as well as her voice. She's amazing.

  • God this woman is amazing.

  • She's from annie, right?

  • THE best version I have ever heard STUNNED me. Faith Prince gave me chills. I am a huge Prince fan and have heard everyone sing this song since Stritch but WOW! Prince is a vocal powerhouse, cynical without being mean and funny in the right places. I wish she'd done the recent version instead of LuPone who played Medea.

  • @pudgeuncle but this is Carole Burnett......

  • @murbuzz And your point is? And I fully realize that this is Carol [no e] Burnett having seen this performance live. I ADORE Carol Burnett more than any performer of al time.

  • @pudgeuncle but you were talking about Faith Prince....

  • She reminds me of miss hannigan from annie haha x

  • @EbonyTomkinson she did play miss hannigan in the old film version

  • What A great song. I also love the Patti LaPone version. I have been in Elaine Stritch's company & have to say , for me she really does not have any appeal whats so ever.

  • Okay, I was just ripping on Patti LuPone's performance of this song in the recent Broadway production, and I thought, gee, maybe I'm being harsh and holding everyone up to Elaine Strich, which is kind of hard to match...so I listened to this one and I have decided that no, Patti LuPone sucks, Carol Burnett does a fabulous job, even though Elaine Strich will always be my favorite.

  • It's Sue's mother!!!! lol jk

  • Anna Kendrick does a short version on "Camp". She sings it wonderfully.

  • Comment removed

  • Brilliant .....bravo Carol (saw the show a few times with Carol and also saw the 1st mounting( MTC) of it with Julie Andrews) but Patti LuPone in 20110 hits it out of the ballpark! Amazing

  • Lets see you get up and do it!

  • Why do people feel the need to compare performers and performances? Elaine Stritch did a great job, but so does Carol Burnett. So does Sheila Gish by the way. All weary and sarcastic in different ways, but all worth performances.

  • Burnett does Stritch does Sondheim does Stritch.

  • Sondheim was dabbling around the edges with his own sexuality when he penned this. Stritch's alcoholism and 'could not give a fuck attitude' was perfect to convey (and disguise) his resentment of Americn heterosexual female decadence and pretence.

  • why is burnett the best drunk EVER?!

  • @afrodude1991 Because she's the daughter of two alcoholics, and herself a teetotaler (for obvious reasons). In acting, you draw on your own experiences; this is her drawing on hers.

  • @afrodude1991 u don't know why?

  • @afrodude1991 Because both of her parents were alcoholics.

  • When I heard this in CAMP, I could imagine HER doing it! Just because of Annie!!! I love her!!! And I'm 18 and one day. Go figure. lol! "I'll drink to that" :)

  • Sondheim said that he would choose an actress over a singer anyday. I think that Carol Burnett is both an actress and a reasonably good singer and does a terrific job here. My very favourite version is by Sheila Gish, but I really like this version here.

  • People need to get off Carol's case.

    Carol= Legend.

    Elaine= Legend.

Both are BRILLANT comdediennes. They both have incredible timing. This is incredible hard to sing, because Elaine's timing was SO PERFECT everyone feels as that if they don't do it somewhat the same, it won't be nearly as funny. And it really will never be funnier (or as painful, because I actually find this song to be a very unhappy song)

Yes Carol is a better singer, but this is not a song created for a singer.

  • @Museleaders After I read Mr. Sondheim's biography, it may be that this song was about his mother and her friends?????

  • Elaine Stritch is much better. She understands this song, whereas Carol Burnett just sings it nicely with a few bitter gestures and expressions. Elaine can sing, she just has a very distincive, rough voice. Carol Burnett is still, of course, brilliant.

  • MISS HANNIGAN ! :)

  • I think she nailed this!! Unlike Stritch, she can sing quite well..they both have a bitter way of delivery, but Burnett's has a certain wistfulness that Elaine's didn't. What a legend.

  • I think she nailed it..and unlike Stritch she actually can sing quite well! She's a legend for a reason!!

  • I"LL DRINK TO THAT TOO !!!!!

  • I have seen Lord know how many productions of Company but THE best I have ever see surprised me...Faith Prince. No peer. She did it in her act a while ago and I hyperventilated.

  • Lovely performer but the gusto belongs to Elaine and always will. Good try Carol!

  • Brilliant. Skippy and Leisuresuit have hit it on the head. Sondheim wrote a song that is totally different words from the original.n

  • What a tart she plays :) She does it differently from Elaine! I find that I can relate to Elaine more, but this is fabulous!!!

    Go, girl.

    KISSES!!!

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SING IT CB!!!

  • Love Carol!!!

  • I disagree with some of the comments. While Elaine Stritch is fabulous and did originate the role... Carol Burnett does an OUTSTANDING job interpreting the song, and her singing voice is much better than Elaine's. And let's remember that it's Sondheim, which is a bitch to sing for even the best singer.

  • @RachelWolfMusic --Totally!

  • @RachelWolfMusic This song doesn't require a great singing voice, Rachel; it's a character song. And not all Sondheim is "...a bitch to song," least of all THIS song. Although Miss Burnett attempted to over-sing this number, her interpretation was good -- at least she knew it is a song dripping with sarcasm. Patti LuPone seems to be clueless about the meaning of the song, and her singing is atrocious. Good job, Carol Burnett!

  • @RachelWolfMusic Agreed!!

  • @RachelWolfMusic na the best was Barbara Walsh.

  • I love Carol Burnett but this song belongs to Elaine Stritch.

  • Given that this is performed out of context, I think Burnett does a stunning job! You can tell that, instead of being in a club as typically performed, her character is alone... lonely... and she hates those ladies who lunch because at least they have each other for comradery.

  • wonderkful

  • my FAV drinking song!

  • i think she captures joanne the best out of anyone i have seen....

  • Ditto !! Brilliant !

  • Carol Burnett is just SO right for Joanne. Gah...<3

  • Carol Burnett is the best!!

  • shes my hero

  • Really? have you never seen "Orphan Annie"? she plays Miss Hanigan!

  • jaded sophisticate, yes. but also quite hammered.

  • I knew I recognized her. I love her in both roles. she is just great...

  • Did you ever watch Annie? lol

  • @decima526 -please read four comments down from this one

  • @tet43 Some jerk spammed my comment. For those who can appreciate and respect other points of view, click onto reply to the side of my comment, and judge for yourself..... So there!(LOL)

  • excellent, but I personally found the ending a little underwhelming

  • carol burnett plays the best drunk.

  • i agree! she ruled as Miss Hannigan in Annie. "Little Girls" was amazing

  • agreed!

  • Joanne is a qualified drunk...one who can hold their booze and keep most of the 'sober' facade. She does this well, in that you only see the impact of the boozery at the ends of phrases. She's 'in control' until a bit of emotion gets past that wall, then she can't control it and the smirk comes out. Well done.

  • Carol Burnett does a good job...but Elaine Stritch OWNS this song. Elaine's got the voice, the roughness, etc, to make this song...well sing!!! Burnett sings well, but her voice doesn't match what the song says, nor the context. Her voice is probably actually too refined and smooth for this song.

  • In 1970, Elaine Stritch originated the role of Joanne in COMPANY and, therefore, was first to sing the song. In character and in the scene, Joanne has had too much to drink and all the bitterness she has bottled-up comes spewing out. As with most of Sondheim, it is hard to perform the song out of context, which is why you will see all these performers on YouTube playing it "high". Each performer has a right to try to make the song her own, to fit her own voice and personality. Burnett is fine

  • Another solid perfromance by Carol Burnett!

  • This is very good, although no Elaine Stritch. The point, of course is SONDHEIM!

  • And Sondheim is vey wordy!

  • I love carol, but, this song just isn't her niche

  • Such A Hanniganesque Performance. =)

  • What is a Mahler, may I ask?

  • A composer.

  • ahh, thankyou. ^^

  • !!! =)

  • Have to say I've been watching different versions all day and so far this is the best.

  • So far, of everyone, she seems to be the only performer of this song who realized she was supposed to be drunk. Even Elaine Stritch. But her version is still the definitive one.

  • Hmm. There are different ways of interpreting it. In the revival she was obviously drunk, but I think that in the original it was more slowly getting more and more numb.

  • Elaine played her character as a lush....I must be much older than you.

  • Maybe just a different kind of lush...

  • By far the best!! Especially good in Annie .

  • One of my favorite performances from one of my favorite jukebox musicals

  • I love her.

  • Brilliant!! Well sung and well acted!

  • this is a great voice, wonderful, and we gay men know, a garland edge, emotion...x

  • i love her, incredible her work..

  • Considering that she isn't a singer. She did a fine job here! He voice actually has gotten better over the years! That's usually not the norm. She is one talented lady. She sounds so much better than she did in 1985 when she did Follies. Honestly her voice in follies made me cringe at times. I know that all the fans are going to stone me for saying that. Although it's the truth. Talented actress, comedienne. Yes indeed.. Singer... NO!

  • didnt carol get her start, starring in once upon a mattress?

one doesnt have to be the greatest singer in the world to work in musical theater

    look at nathan lane

  • She claims not to be a singer, but she has been doing musical comedy since she started in show business. Follies was out of her vocal range. They should have either changed the key or not cast her. I agree that her voice has gotten better with age, but if you go back to her early work, especially her work with Julie Andrews from the 50's and 60's, I think she holds her own. While she is a better comedian, I would say that she is also a singer.

  • @nareyaword

Her character had only one song in FOLLIES -- And, although not vocal perfection, I thought she did a wonderful job with it!

  • Ah...your name makes it clear that you have no taste.

  • Angela Landsbury does it too.....

  • @leisuresuitmikey : What are you talking about? Carol Burnett got her START in Broadway musicals. is she a classically trained singer? No, but she can sell a song and she can really sock a note out. Listen to something from Once Upon a Mattress. she can really sing.

  • @leisuresuitmikey In what alternate universe would some fool claim that Burnett is NOT a singer?

  • @leisuresuitmikey she was considered good enough to do a lovely set of duets with Julie Andrews. Carlo started on Broadway jjust like she did. :P

    Love them both!!!

  • @leisuresuitmikey I hate to correct you, but carol burnett, (indeed a great comedienne and actress) is very much a singer...she began her career singing with a couple of great and highly regarded Broadway musicals, and the the three TV specials she did with Julie Andrews were nearly all singing, plus she recorded a few albums...(i own two of them) and she could BELT. I DO agree with you about the "Follies" concert, though she sang fine, there were a couple of points where she was off key.

  • love the song! she made me love it even more! bravo!

  • *bravA

  • Omg! i loved her in Noises off!!

  • I love carol Burnett, she does my favorite interpretation of this song!! a comic genius!

  • Welcome Back!!
