This bugle call signals when the flag is lowered at the end of any given day, Colors is then played after to signal the folding and proper storage of the flag for the night. I proudly salute these bugle calls every day.
As for the opinions about this one in particular, we do not retreat, we tactically withdraw, then return with bigger weapons.
LOL, it's played at 1700 hrs every day, on almost every American installation.. the dif between us and the French, is we're just lowering our flag out of respect to our fine nation... not running screaming away like a 5 year girl with a bee in her hair....
@Tankerc YOU try begin surrounded by an army you didn't know was there until they were in your capitol. The Blitz Krieg tactic was merciless and incomparably effective. The French fought bravely, and they've been commended by military strategists for holding out as long as they did against the German War machine. If the U.S. was in France's postition, they wouldn't have done any better.
@Tankerc Lol you think you know what your talking abut but the french have won the most battles in history and had the americans faced the gremand in 1940 in the north of france they would have lost even more badly this is coming from an englshman who know his history
@Tankerc What gives you the right to pick on France... They are the country that won us our independence, They were the first to follow into a republic Government, and The done 60% of all the fighting in WWI. They may have had a hard spot during WWII, when they weren't expecting a blitzkrieg worked so well against them, but now they are a formidable nation with one of the best Armed Forces in the world.
-Greetings from an Educated American, and future Seaman in the USN
@inailboards yea... most formidable... sure think that my friend. france used to be AMAZING but now they are smelly frog eaters so yea... sorry but made my day laughing at they are a formidable nation with one of the best Armed Forces in the world. and your going into the USN the best period Navy in the world and you can say that with a straight face damn...
@Slayersamone France does have a highly advanced armed forces.
I'm British, I shouldn't really be saying that. But don't pick on our neighbour.
Don't be an arrogant fool. Superpowers and military might comes and goes - America is no different. One day you too will be eating humble pie and asking what happened to your Empire.
@BasilFawlty4444 first off we dont have an empire. you brits seem to forget that we kicked your asses out of our country so we could be come a republic of self governing states with "freedom" we dont have a queen or king we have a ELECTED by the people president not someone that is there by birth right or what ever. and yes america is going to fall. no republic can last more that 200 years. sad really but like you said rule of history yes.
@Slayersamone Firstly, America's concept of freedom is VERY English in it's conception. The American concept of individual freedom stems from the Magna Carta. The Constitution and the Declaration of Independence are based on the work of English philosopher John Locke.
The War of Independence was very unpopular in Britain, where it was viewed as a war against, in the words of Edmund Burke MP, "their own blood on the American continent," and a struggle against freedom.
Secondly, the monarch hasn't had any real power since 1707 (last time the royal veto was used).
Thirdly, a historian's perspective, America's current position is pretty much that of an Empire - the terms "superpower" and "Empire" are pretty much interchangeable. Historian Niall Fergusson of Oxford University, specialist in colonial history, describes the US as an "Empire in denial," going so far to say that this denial is a "danger to the world."
@BasilFawlty4444 ok i dont understand how america is an empire i really dont we dont have colonies we dont own a mass of land. and how the hell are we a danger to the world. this is what i dont get, when something bad happens in a country and america does nothing the world screams that we dont care about the 3rd world. but when we try to help we get blasted for being like what you say Imperialists. WTF what are we supposed to do. and again dont be sore that we arent your "loyal subjects"
@Slayersamone "loyal subjects" - I simply think it's about time that people realise that the War of Independence was about taxation and representation, not freedom.
America's modern position in the world, in effect as policeman, mirrors that of an Empire of past. I would not call America the leader of the free world, but Fergusson's point that the US is a "danger to the world" is that of a NEGLECTION of this policing duty.
This is Pax Americana, like Pax Britannica before it.
@Tankerc Actually. Immediately following retreat is to the colors. 6 general categories of bugle calls. I remember that from way back when, when I got boarded for my stripes.
Kids, this is actaully a video with an American flag and a trumpet signal... not more, not less... where do you guys come up with such hatred beneath those freakin videos?!
Enjoy the traditional sound of the legendary US-Cavalry and shut the fuck up!

A.P. HILL: We thought they were a detatchment of Home Guard, but they turned out to be dismounted Cavalry, and well they put up a good fight! And the boys weren't going to back down from a fight, and well, sir...
@TheTobyKing it all depends on how it is plaed on what occasion. I mean, in a battle, if retreat is slow, they would'nt know whats going on. At my camp, first call is played slow so we can realize whats happening and get off out lazy asses.
@jadepokefan4ever Oh ok. I've only heard this played during retreat for the colors during a flag ceremony and it is played slower there, so yes i guess it does depend on the occasion
@Goatoftheforest it is that American is madein Vietnam, iraq, and iran: D gg USA Afghanistan soon ... Country king of the world .... mac donald just lol .... GRAND USA is finished ^ ^
@Goatoftheforest I don't mind the yankees that they helped in the war, I am very gratefull for that. But they keep trying to get all the credit themselve and telling the kind of history that makes them look glorious -_-
@ViccardXViccc I agree. I'm American but I will be the first to admit that the USA was not alone. The Soviets deserve most of the credit for defeating the Germans. You should be proud to be Dutch. Your country is cleaner, safer, has better schools, and better food than the USA.
@ViccardXViccc the history that makes us yanks glorious is from pre world war 1 and2 as in the civil, revolutionary, and the war against mexico in the old west
the cowboy is an american icon and symbol which comes from the civil and the war against mexico and beyond
@ViccardXViccc and btw southerners of the U.S. don't like being called yankees thats a term for northerners, mainly anyone in the north east states like new york
@asdl805 lol. Yeah, because they killed 180 texian (not american) soldiers, who were given the change to surrender, you killed and murdered innocent people and Catholics.
You are such a Yank. Really. Just poining at random things to protect you're statement.
The Alamo-defenders still made a very good stand, I do not doubt that.
But the Yanks could have helped the Texas-rebellion...But they didn't.
@ViccardXViccc stop saying yanks, that means a northerner from places like new york and america didn't help because they didn't want to war with mexico and those Texans moved to taxes from america a lot of them didn't even live in Texas there were some from new Orleans, Davy Crockett was from Tennessee along with his boys and Jim bowie wasn't from there either im pretty sure about that and that was one step closer to texas joining the U.S. and they had no reason to surrender
@ViccardXViccc it was the start of texas independence and they were there to fight it was a revolution, also there where supposed to be more texans coming to help but the high command of texas said no so they died and it became a battle cry and the boys there knew that they where going to die and what would happen when they did
@ViccardXViccc Obviously you didnt attack anyone because we had to save you, nice job there france, also thaks for vietnam. Also, you guys failed at the Panama canal, you couldnt do it because of bugs. You guys try to pass a law making war illegal.. ya nice job. But ill give you this.. you guys never gave up.. oh nevermind.. you did.
@ViccardXViccc Obviously you didnt attack anyone because we had to save you, nice job there france, also thaks for vietnam, we sent you 20 billion $ in todays money and you couldnt keep a forest, way to go. Also, you guys failed at the Panama canal, you couldnt do it because of bugs. You guys try to pass a law making war illegal.. ya nice job. But ill give you this.. you guys never gave up.. oh nevermind.. you did.
@Yaks7 First of all, I'm Dutch, second, US invaded Vietnam after the french left. Third, you tried to hold a dictator in charge of Vietnam, instead of the communism, which you thought was superevil.
fourth, war is never a good thing so a law against it isn't that wrong.
fifth, 22,000 people died trying to build the canal. That's more then some little bugs.
@ViccardXViccc 1)We didn't "invade" Vietnam we were there at the request of the legitimate government of South Vietnam.2) War is never good? How about when my Uncle fought to liberate your country, Dutchman? 3)How are you going to enforce a law against war, by waging war against the other side?
@ViccardXViccc Baloney. We should never have gotten involved in Vietnam three of my friends were killed there, but the people we were fighting were brutal dictators responsible for the death of millions. The Canadians and Brits did their partin WWII, but who fought the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge, who supplied not only the Brits and Canadians but the Russians as well? You have to free your mind from your left wing delusions and learn some history. You could at least be grateful Dutchie.
@ViccardXViccc People like me? What exactly did I do other than defend my country? The Netherlands and Europe as a whole is in great danger. I know this from personal knowledge. Most of my father's family remained in Italy. Your culture is in danger of collapse because you are not propagating it. You're abandoning your heritage and you are not even having children. What is Europe going to look like in two generations? Stop picking on America and look to your own house.
@Goatoftheforest and now look up history, instead of just saying what the tv said. Turns out they fought more wars than your country has, or even the british empire has, won more than 70% of all wars between 400 before christ to now, and fucking MADE UR COUNTRY INDEPENDANT you ignorant ungrateful piece of shit. they also invented armpitshaving and you called people who wahsed themselves "french", in your little "new jersualem" colonies. fucked up shitter.
@abcdefg6554 Uh, noooo. 'Taps' is played at ~2130 "rack time", after 'Tatoo' which means settle down shut up and get read for the rack. 'Retreat' is played at evening Colors. And, in the case that is is used in the modern day it doesn't me run away from battle it means rest, in the same sense as "weekend retreat".
@FSboarder Back atcha. And it isn't "ass hole". It's "asshole". It's one word. Oh, and I'm not an asshole. I'm a first class asshole- I try to be best at everything.
I remember as a kid on Kadena AB Okinawa we would stop whatever we were doing and stand and face the direction of the music. Of course as an adult serving in the USAF.
When we have a Flag Retirement Ceremony, Retreat is played as the first Flag is placed on the fire. I find this most fitting for the Flag's final retreat. Note: this ceremony is performed at dusk at the same time the Flag is normally retired for the day.
"Retreat" does not mean skedaddleing. At Ft. Lewis, as I remember, It sounded at 5:00 and signified the end of the work day. If you were outside and in uniform you had to stop, stand at attention, and salute the flag or where the music came from. If you were in a building or a moving car, you weren't required to observe this courtesy. About 4:55, soldiers were hurrying to find buildings.
I've already thanked GypsySockz for clearifying what "retreat" really means in the sense of the flag. Thank you also for that. The end of the day, I'll have to remember that!
@Bamchucknorris More like the Italian one - The French Empire was fierce and brutal. Besides, this has a completely different meaning than *that* retreat.
This is still played everynight. As CDO I had to make sure it was played

fifth, 22,000 people died trying to build the canal. That's more then some little bugs.
ViccardXViccc 8 months ago
@ViccardXViccc 1)We didn't "invade" Vietnam we were there at the request of the legitimate government of South Vietnam.2) War is never good? How about when my Uncle fought to liberate your country, Dutchman? 3)How are you going to enforce a law against war, by waging war against the other side?
trajan75 7 months ago
@trajan75 You tried to keep an dictator on his throne. Nice.
It were mainly the Canadians and British who freed us, not just your country
ViccardXViccc 7 months ago
@ViccardXViccc Baloney. We should never have gotten involved in Vietnam three of my friends were killed there, but the people we were fighting were brutal dictators responsible for the death of millions. The Canadians and Brits did their partin WWII, but who fought the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge, who supplied not only the Brits and Canadians but the Russians as well? You have to free your mind from your left wing delusions and learn some history. You could at least be grateful Dutchie.
trajan75 7 months ago
@trajan75 I am grateful. Its because of people like you I started to dislike the US
ViccardXViccc 7 months ago

This isn't played every evening taps is.
abcdefg6554 11 months ago
@abcdefg6554 Uh, noooo. 'Taps' is played at ~2130 "rack time", after 'Tatoo' which means settle down shut up and get read for the rack. 'Retreat' is played at evening Colors. And, in the case that is is used in the modern day it doesn't me run away from battle it means rest, in the same sense as "weekend retreat".

I remember as a kid on Kadena AB Okinawa we would stop whatever we were doing and stand and face the direction of the music. Of course as an adult serving in the USAF.

We are not retreating, we are advancing in the opposite direction.
obi2012 1 year ago
When we have a Flag Retirement Ceremony, Retreat is played as the first Flag is placed on the fire. I find this most fitting for the Flag's final retreat. Note: this ceremony is performed at dusk at the same time the Flag is normally retired for the day.
sconto1 1 year ago
Retreat is the flag being brought down at the end of the day.

About 4:55, soldiers were hurrying to find buildings.
smokey1255 1 year ago

I've already thanked GypsySockz for clearifying what "retreat" really means in the sense of the flag. Thank you also for that. The end of the day, I'll have to remember that!
blazeofglory78 1 year ago
Retreat in this case means lowering the flag before the anthem every day. It was atleas that way on peterson and vandenburg AFB.
Starwarsfansitecrs 1 year ago
It's like that every AFB. Only difference is, that directly after retreat they play the national anthem.

You all do know that this is played pretty much every day on Military Installations, right? This call signifies the end of the duty day.
