  • im getting my rocks off as i type this ..ughhhh YES

  • @smokasomeweed Yeah it is, but beware of the DBK's and Wizard Burial Grounds because they might spin you the wrong way ;)

  • @Rcs52590 hahha wizard burial grounds for sure just gotta fasten your seat belt and go along for the ride

  • @dietzj16 Yeah just shoot me a direct message

  • I love this song, but unlike pretty much everyone else commenting I neither smoke weed nor trip.

  • @MaxFactor802 802 represent

  • OG hat! /thread

  • improg.

  • where do i start with this band (preferably live)?

  • @slideon check your email inbox and prepare to be blown away.

  • @Rcs52590 can you email me that too

  • @slideon

Well you got the biggest thing about this band... They are amazing live. I almost can't listen to their studio recordings. The best thing you can do, is go see them live... Preferably on a hallucinogen.

  • nice hat jake

  • i bet everyone there was baked

  • Ya comparing two COMPLETELY different bands is stupid, it always just end up in an opinion based consensus.

  • @ataylor992 Right on! Still don't understand why people can't just enjoy the music. Every band is going to be a little different so instead of comparing them, we should all just like them for the great music they bring us.

  • @MrOpenmind77 Lol dude "even though they sound like they need better compostition and song structure"???? You obviously don't know what improvisation is. Umphreys jams a lot, hence Umphreys fits the definition of a jamband. They're not just progressive rock. You obviously haven't listened to umphreys that much. take a loot at anchor drops.

  • enough with UM vs Phish; they're both outstanding bands

  • @poshjarker Yes, both fantastic, yet really nothing alike. Things they have in common: awesome musicians who jam. They both could be called their own genre. Everyone, just enjoy them both, we're lucky to have two bands this awesome.

  • jake cinninger could fart out more melody than trey anastasio could ever play on a guitar

  • Love the sombrero!

  • Cant wait to shake the bones to this gem...

  • hey rockstar blaze, if i wanted to name drop i could tell you the bass player in my band for almost 30 years was sam lerner, roseann barr's nephew, thru' her i met the clintons, and a host of who's who types. Im 50 and have been gigging since i was ten. ive seen alot of good shows that have very little to compare to today, but the best show ever, without a doubt was early stevie wonder, whom i met, na-na.

  • Please stop comparing UM with Phish. There is no comparison. They are completely different and awesome in their own ways. I love them both :)

  • I'm pretty sure I heard this song when I got put on hold with the doctor's office

  • @lilsean1 thats funny....although I do like this song. But your comment made me chuckle, I know what you mean kinda.

  • hope for art in music, as someone whos seen brand x, kazumi wat on a good night, the dead(20+xs), metheny, chick electric, spread and phsh, yes, elp, carlos, weather report, pastorious, luc ponty, the dan,the allmans original line, and the jackson 5, and led zep 3x, and pink floyd animals, and marley, i can tell you, these guys are good.

  • @mwyatt222 Name dropping is fun isn't it!!!

  • hope for art in music, as someone whos seen brand x, kazumi wat on a good night, the dead(50+xs), metheny, chick electric, spread and phsh, yes, elp, carlos, weather report, pastorious, luc ponty, the dan,the allmans original line, and the jackson 5, and led zep 3x, and pink floyd animals, and marley, i can tell you, these guys are good.

  • Triple Wide...best umphreys song out there still. so sick live

  • I hate for people to be misinformed about Jerry Garcia death being in 95 rather than 94. I just realized I am capable of being an over informed die hard dead head, jamband fan that is actually giving out corrected information. What have I become...

  • jerry garcia passed away in '94 :(

but that doesn't stop jam bands from jamming!

  • I've met all these guys while volunteering at Summer Camp, some of the coolest people you'll ever meet.

  • I like this song, I've seen this band a few times, but this particular song sounds to me like a Disco Biscuits jam.

  • This was a great show. Me and my buddies through are sombreros on stage and they rocked them for the rest of the show. Its so weird how Jake is so underated as a guitarist. You never see him in guitar magazines or anything. By far my favorite guitaris and favorite band.

  • @BuKnAsTee151 he's one of my top 10 favorite (most creative) guitarists of all time.

  • stop the fighting Cant we all just dance along?

  • Wake me when something happens.

  • @maxwellkelly Don't be a hater.

  • @maxwellkelly obviously a coffee drinker, stop hatin on good music!

  • it would be sick tripping at one of their shows

  • @smokasomeweed would be? lol it is.

  • @smokasomeweed it is man

  • @smokasomeweed dude im going to see them at summer camp on acid, shits guna be sooooooo dope

  • @smokasomeweed did,,, it is...

  • Phish, what's that? UM - SBC!!!

  • Yeaa..So i just got my tickets for the UM w/ Keller Williams in Nashville TN. It will be my first time seeing both of them live.. and all i can say is... WOOO EXCITED

  • NICE!

  • UM or Phish both are taking steps to express themselves the energy they both put out deserves praise

  • Awesome Band. been into these guys for like 7 or 8 years they've really come into their own.

  • Love you Umphrey's!!! You guys Rock!!!

Check out one of my new fave bands, they're just a local band from my area, but they rock. If you like UM you will like The Harmonic Cosmonuats

  • i will add that phish is more compositionally awesome from start to finish of most songs, where umphrey's awesomeness comes from more individually sophisticated parts. that being said, i agree, i like them both for different reasons. oh yeah. umphreys got me on the metal + untz jams

  • Honestly, who can compare this to anything? Not who is better, but genre and style. Um has their own style of "jam" all together. So much so I have trouble describing their music to people and often just have to play them a track.

  • I'm going tonight to see UM at the Showbox in Seattle. I've seen Phish 16 times, and this is my first UM show, however I'll say that when Phish was in their hiatus, it was UM that finally gave me back the joy from a musical experience. I had never really heard them, though I caught a little of them @ Bonnaroo in 02. I really appreciate Jake as a guitarist, and he is really flashy, but holds up under pressure as far as I can tell. I'm not here to compare... Just enjoy the wave for what it is.

  • um and phish are both fuking awesome but trey is a jedi and would rip Cinn a new asshole if he wanted...not taking anything away from um cus they are great and i get down at there shows but its really no comparison...

  • 4:55 --were they trying to re-create cell phone stereo distortion?

  • post a comment not a paragraph. UM KICKS ASS NORTHCOAST FEST BABY!!!!

  • The way i look at the whole phish vs umph issue. YES, PHISH has seen better days...92-96 was pure magic. But years of touring, good times, and unfortunatly for trey, drugs, have changed their model. I see the same energy present in umphrey's, not only in the band, but in OUR crowd! Point is this is a band we call our own, I never could've with phish, i missed the golden years :( As much as i'd like to say i was at madison NYE 95, I'm as happy to say ive experienced as much fun at scamp 09 and 10

  • to those debating the phish/um issue, ill start of by saying that cinninger is my favorite guitarist to listen to right now, but phish is being discredited here.

um's jams are more formulaic and structured, giving jake and brendan an opportunity to shred with the band steadily backing them up.

trey was trying to lead the direction of the music in many of their jams, and didnt have as much time to play "traditional" guitar solos. listen to 1992-1994 Phish - almost nothing compares.

  • Go see live music

  • 4:40 some cool frequency stuff going on very nice.

  • Jake is God, Brendan is JC, Joel is the Sun, Ryan is the Universe, Andy is the cosmic particles that put it all tougher, and Kris is the stellar BAND!

  • I love Phish as well, but you are right, UM is definately more refined. You have to put Cinninger and Blayliss up there with Jimmy Herring on the Jam genre. Trey is a great song writer but isn't in these guys league.

  • @ninjajo11 Trey is one of the most influential players ever. Having 2 guitars in a band makes it easier for each player to display his chops. He is the only 6 string on stage for Phish. He has to keep the groove, experiment harmonically, sing and display chops all at the same time. This results in occasional sloppiness I think. But I kno youll agree both bands are great.

  • If you need to argue while/after watching this, you totally missed the point. Enjoy it and space out. Smoke up if ya got it.

  • @stackny knows whatsup. <3

  • fusion at its finest! is it hip-hop? is it electronica? is it metal? is it jam? LOL...

no i am not asking this, i am stating all the dif genres this song segues through. flawlessly!

  • Everything a good jam should be. Just amazing.

  • Simply-simple-y-amazing.

  • Umphrey's can easily put on a 60 minute jam that would kick phish's ass

  • 4:00 ya use dat spd-s myers

  • I'd say that UM is much more technical than Phish, which is why I like Phish more. Because of the looseness of Phish they can go a lot more places that I've never seen UM go . . . Both bands are absolutely fantastic, I just don't get the same range of emotions out of UM as do from Phish.

  • @BananaBreadMakesMe i dunno man. umph can pull out the untz better than most bands that focus on it, as well as having some incredibly jazzy segments. not only that, check out #5, wbg, or nopener. all metalAF.

    however

    BISCO SUPREMACY

  • "BISCO SUPREMACY "

Nope. UM = Phish > tDB

Overall, talent, range of styles and fluidity.... tDB can't touch UM or Phish.

  • @Daedalus1347

    diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

  • Truth

  • @Daedalus1347 Nope. Phish > UM = tDB

  • Phish>UM>Grateful Dead>tDB

  • The Disco Biscuits CD i bought was a total and complete waste of my time. shitty jams, shitty riffs, shitty singing

  • its ok, you werent chosen for the dark side.

i have seen UM 7 times in the last 6 months and i couldnt be happier!

  • ya they dont have as much soul so they have to compensate somwhere, but they also havt been around as long

  • bcbower you disprove yourself simply because Phish writes there stuff. Yes both bands improve but see phish live there jams are much shorter and after the structured parts you expect to hear. Umphreys has been known to jam longer as well play reprises or only portions of songs going into Jimmy's or straight up jams in the song. With Phish when they start YEM they finish YEM and you hear every part you want to from prevoius shows which makes pHish weaker in my opinion.

  • Um . . . phish is a different, older band now. They're doing different things at their shows than they did when they were UM's age.

But they have played longer jams than anyone. I mean come on, a 60 minute Runaway Jim?

  • I think it is 59min. but who's counting

  • mjktrey hit it on the head, Ive seen both bands numerous times and I would say that Umphreys is the most technically skilled band. Any band that has signs for when to switch keys, go up whole or half steps, milk a jam,etc and can execute them without talking or really listening is amazing. And lets be honest Umphreys is that band, watch them communicate on stage next show you got to the talent is unmistakable

  • Umphrey's is much more technical. While both are improvisational, I would have to say Phish is more of an improvisational band. Umphreys mcgee is more well aware of where certain jams are going, and they talk to eachother onstage. The members of Phish just listen to eachother.

  • "However, it may help you to note that Umphrey's defies the scientific method, so you've already lost your chance at being empirical, rational, or objective."

A quote a friend of mine once shared with me, I think it does alot of help at explaining the ways of UM

  • totally puts my thoughts into words. When somebody asks me what kind of music they play, I tell them that if I could define them, I wouldn't love them so much.

  • Wish the biscuits came in on this one with buddha.

  • yea the show at higher ground burlington was amazing!!!

  • I just wish that they played every weekend within driving distance of me cause i would be there every weekend!!!

    GO IRISH!!!!

  • rager

  • You have to look at UM with the following mindset:

They love everything about being onstage and jamming with each other because, of course, they are all friends.

Being a fan, you just have to enjoy the upbeat style of theirs and let the music take you for a trip. No comparisons need to be made, just enjoy their music and don't start arguments over it. UM doesn't want that.

  • word

  • Umphrey's and Phish are both amazing, just different. Being a multi-instrumentalist, I do find Phish more technical though.

  • phish more technical?? if anything phish experiments with dissonance and sloppiness way more than umphreys (phish heads dont rain down on me i am one of you) .... not that it sounds worse or better its jsut a different soudn.... i would say cinninger and blayliss are the most technically accurate players out there as well as some of the most creative which makes for an interesting sound since it is such technical improvisation.

  • Phish is more technical because they write very complex logues like YEM, Divided Sky and David Bowie. Both are equally amazing and dynamically complex improvisers.

  • i agree sort of but i wouldnt say complexity and technicality are one and the same. i feel that technicality relies on more strategically placed notes which i think umphreys does a little bit of a better job with... i got an umps show tonight in burlington either way ... ill let you know how melted my face is when i get back hahaha... cheers!

  • @Bonzoandthemadhatter

Not raining down on you—but for the sake of discussion I think the dissonance and chromatism that Phish use while jamming is actually way more "technical" and difficult to pull off than sticking to the scale. Of course there's the issue of tightness vs sloppiness but that varies according to other factors.

  • @hubertrogers i do not agree. I speak of technicality as acurately executing the notes one attempts to play. Cinninger stuffs a boatload of notes into any given riff and nails them. Not nailing them by just playing them, but hitting them very accurately and perfectly. I mean that the way they play is more technical. Perhaps phish has written a more technical song, but the style in which they play is not more technical. It is looser and more abstract. especially trey versus cininger.

  • @Bonzoandthemadhatter I love Phish as well, but you are right, UM is definately more refined.

  • I was at this show and it was simply amazing. Out of the 30 shows I've seen this is one of the one I go back and listen to a lot. Wish I had a complete video of this show.

  • I love this band but posting that they should be compared to mozart or beethoven is rediculous, especially on teh page with their repedative techno song. Even comparing with Phish is unfair as phish precomposes so much more in their songs than UM. They don't have a YEM, Stash or Reba with intricate precomposed parts, but that's not their style.

  • Wizard Burial Ground

  • Utopian Fir? different "movements" and always 20 minutes long like YEM

  • Thank you umphreys mc-fucking-gee

  • love the mexi hat on cinco de mayo!!!

  • such a great jam

  • For the Love of Brian people... These r bands we r talking about not women... we can love em all!!! Like different colors in a pallet we can draw from them all when we paint our masterpieces'.

    LUV YUS

  • thats a serious tossup, trey and page are musical geniuses, straight up. phish songs are maybe not as technical as UM's shit, but consider where the musical roots they were coming from (Dead, Allman, jazz) and the fact that;

Umph came up playing phish covers. no phish=no um imo, at least not the same band and catalog as these days.

still, i have always maintained that umphreys man-for-man is the most technical/ttalented band out there today, and will go down as a legendary group.

    Im a tribehead.

  • Umphrey's is amazing. I'm from South Bend and I love them. No one is better than phish, though. Sorry. The two music styles are extremely different as well

  • UM ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • are you serious? Umphrey's is amazing. I've been to 6 of their shows and I've never felt unwanted or that anyone was self conscious. Their concerts are the most fun I ever have had.

  • great jam i love um

  • HAHA.

  • this song is immense...

  • these guys rule... i saw them a few years ago and their show is tight

  • Looks like Bayliss was having a good time! Wasn't this the last show they played 5th of Beethoven as well (before the recent one in Madison)? They throw down for the Granada.

  • modern day lol.

these guys have been killing it for over 10 years.

  • roflmao@ 'they don't suck'

  • they don't, they're even better than phish.

  • def not better than phish my friend...but they put on a good show

  • What planet are you from? UM is a million times more talented than Phish. When comparing musical abilities and talent, you should be comparing UM to Mozart or Beethoven, not Phish...

  • lol thats the funiest shit i've read in a long time, and i troll on FML all the time...

    (Resonse to PimblyCharles comment)

  • Mozart, phish and UM are completely uncomparable

  • Comment removed

  • They don't suck. I'm impressed. I figured just by the name that they would be another random ass modern band that sucks. I was wrong.

  • i actually think its one of the most creative band names out there. nevertheless, never judge a band by its name.

cant wait till they come to NY in april

  • honestly i do not understand the name what does it mean? I do not disagree they are an amazing band though. I love when they stretch songs like these into crazy 20-30 minute jams

  • umphrey is a relative of bayliss (uncle, i think). not really sure where the mcgee came from though. bottom line, the name sounds cool

  • I think it was the name of a distant relative of BB's named Humphreys McGee. No matter the name, the music is umfucking-believable

  • no doubt. thanks for the info.

  • nice. i dont think i can ove anything... im a real stone hearted induvidual.

  • i ove this song

heard it first time at the release show in chicago for mantis

  • and them and the biscuits i think have the best build ups for sho.

  • yeah i would have to say umphreys and the biscuits are probably the 2 most talented improvisational bands out right now. but thats just what i think. buuuut yeah umphreys is pretty nasty.

  • I think that umphrey's are extremely talented because just to go up on stage and figure out what sounds good with whatever else another member is playing takes a rediculous amount of musical knowledge, and im not sayin that all memorized stuff is bad, its just that the Jonas Brothers and all those other "popular" bands just arent talented enough to jam, and thats why i like jam bands. U gotta be really good to sound good

  • umphreys is the best live rock band out there. its simply a fact you may not like their music but they have a tight as fuck act everytime

  • There is no way anyone can listen to this song and not be in a great mood when its over...BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG!!!!

  • im tired of looking at every umph video and reading comments about being related to phish and the dead,

get your head out of your ass and enjoy the music provided, im sure umph doesent get on stage praying they do better than moe. or anyone else

  • I know what you mean man. But unfortunately, a lot of people will just look at the scene and lump them altogether even if they have completely different sounds and call them related. Phish, UM, the Dead, moe., Bisco, SCI, STS9, YMSB, all those bands have completely different sounds and styles but they are all joined together by sharing more or less the same fan base. I always found that to be one of the most beautiful things about the jam scene.

  • widespread is different style just like the dead are but this shit is really better than phish

  • Comment removed

  • How bout this...they are all great! They are different, so you cant say "x" is better than "y" because it all comes down to personal preference.

Let's all just appreciate the music and be grateful that we have it!

  • Thank you... I can never believe how many people continuously say that this band is better than that band. It all comes down to your taste in music.

Everybody just needs to enjoy the music for what it is!

  • yall are both so right about that. umphreys is currently my favorite band out there but it really is all about personal preference and just enjoying the music at hand. i cant stand when people argue about which band is better because they are all different and great in their own way.

  • But its so damn fun to complain and bitch about how the way I think is far more superior than the way you think...Just let me talk shit...But seriously these guy do have skills and it doesnt make a damn difference what anybody thinks as long as you enjoy the music

  • um no...why do u find it necessary to post such things in here...they don't even compare

  • Ump Is SOOOO much Better than Moe. not even Close

    But Moe Is Dank Too

  • where are the MUSHIESSSSS IN ATHENSSSS

  • umph kills moe. the musicianship is just not there

  • LOVE THIS FREAKING SONG. sounds like they've changed it up a bit since the last time i heard it.

  • nasty.. cant wait to see them 10/17

  • i saw them in milwaukee and they played this after the morning song, it was ssoo sick

  • I was at this show, it was the HEAT. The jam in the middle of the Triple Wide is what Umphrey's McGee is all about!

  • Gabba-gabba-we accept you! One of us! ;D

  • hell yea dude i was there!!!!!! probly the best concert ive ever witnessed...

  • Did anyone else witness Umph's exceptional show at the 10,000 lakes festival this year? absolutly on fire!

  • yeah i was there and my face got torn off. long live the umph

  • i am officially changed my opinion of this song..rock on um!

  • i must say that i had the oppourtunity to go to the texas shows and didnt go

    big mistake

  • huge mistake! umphs has BEEN good, but this is a time of growth when they are getting significantly better and unique when i see em every couple months. once moe. goes on hiatus this fall, then UM might be the baddest jam band in the land.

  • also moe. has been pretty stagnant recently, their new album wasn't nearly as good as the one umph put out, plus i've seen both bands in the last few months and umph blew moe. outta the water. i agree that once moe. goes on haiatus umph is gonna blow past em, unless moe. practices like madmen while on haiatus. it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out

  • i agree. moe.'s last studio album not so great. they say it's the first album they made with entirely new material. in other words, most the songs on their previous albums they had been playing for months or years live. I saw them twice this summer and haven't heard them play anything from Sticks. It sure feels like a farewell tour cus their digging deep in their catalog every show...

  • in your opinion...

I think sticks and stones was amazing because moe. changes it up during every album, its all apart of their genius
