@scousesusan It is a beautiful song. I only started listening to Renaissance this year - although I've known of Northern Lights since the 70s! Annie has a truly gorgeous voice and range.
OMG...I've just been beamed back to 1975......listening to Renaissance in the shelter as a freedom fighter in East Beirut in between missions then, while bombs were pouring outside ... seems like a dream...tho it was cruel reality, so many of my buddies passed..but we remain..strong as our Cedars... Cheers.
Beautiful song, but I prefer the full version from "Ashes are Burning" which features an intro and conclusion from Debussy's "Sunken Cathedral", by group pianist John Tout.
Saw Renaissance last year and on Friday, July 2nd in Rochester, NY. Annie Haslam and Michael Dunford from the prolific lineup. Absolutely wonderful. Annie hit every note and sang beautifully as ever. Lucky to get autographs and a "fist bump" from Annie.
When I first heard this, I thought it was modern Symphonic Metal, but it turns out it is from the 70's! Anyways, wonderful vocals. I love this kind of music :}
This is such an eerie, ghostly song. But with a real transcendental kind of beauty. Makes me feel like I'm back out at sea on a dark, stormy night. As I was a few times when I lived on a boat in Hawaii. Annie- you're a goddess, and your essence will shine on in the hearts of many, forever.
THANKS for posting this i had their albums too and a neighbor borrowed permanently never thght i d find it again i did find mother russia and can u understand on a cd so im wearing it out LOL
Had several of their albums in my teens... thought they were "ahead of their time"... and couldn't believe Annie's voice/talent.
They made quite an impression on a "corn fed hillbilly" from the south... and is one of my best memories from my youth... they are "immortal", for the good, or for bad!!!
Love this song. had this album when it first was released. Wore it out. Just bought the CD. It's as good as I remembered. They don't make music like this anymore. Annie has the best voice in rock, could listen to her all day
where did you get THAT photo? ive EVER only seen it on the uk first run of TURN OF THE CARDS (BTM 1000) back cover on one of the cards; Later issued conformed to the US discs cover
I'm glad to see that Annie has fans all over the world. Until You Tube, I thought she and Renaissance were virtually unknown, and underrated. Live on forever, Annie! May your pure, symphonic voice fill the Heavens...
Don't buy it yet people , first pressing is duff .
slow vocal content - if you were unfortunate enough to get a duff copy - then complain to Cherry red records - they know of the problem and will replace it - when they get their arses into gear
Thank you for the beautiful, bitter-sweet memories. Never again shall talent & music such as this pass our ways again. I weep at the thought that future generations may be denied pure music such as this.
Eine schöne traurige Begegnung mit dem Tod (a beautiful meeting with death).

This song is simply fabulous. We just love Annie's voice and the boy playing. Our kids called it the Sad Song and they still love it as adults.
Betty Thatcher I believe wrote this in the aftermath of the Mousehole lifeboat disaster.
We will remember them

@scousesusan The song was released in 1973. The Mousehole lifeboat disaster was in 1981.

@gettysburggeek24 Well, there actually is symphonic metal, but it is modern metal combined with symphony.

@london2z No, they were not unknown. Though I agree, it sometimes looks that way. Great band, even greater vocals.
