A knife can be your only friend... the one friend that wont betray you... If you dont respect the blade... the blade wont be there to save you... as you just proven...
I respected this test on D2, until now. You should have stopped after if survived the 1st flex test. It did survive... there was no need to do it again. The knife didn't fail... you did. The other tests were serviceable but knives like this should never be used as pry bars. Eeek...
This is predominately a fighting knife as all KA- BARs of this design are. Serrations on a blade are mainly for cutting things like rope or other tough materials. I wouldnt pound on a serrated blade for the very reason you stated. This is just not that kind of knife. I agree. He should have tested the plain edge. Maybe it would've survived. He wasted over 100 on a flawed experiment, as with the serration you cant properly test the strength of D2 steel. *cough* Fail!
Hey dude, I bought the Gerber LMFII infantry knife after watching what you did to it, awesome. I broke the tip on a RAT 5 D2, So far I dont like D2 steel. I just wanna ask to maybe do the step on the knife test at the end cause I enjoy watching you try to cut through steel and stuff, thats really cool, but when you do the step thing it all ends when they snap. LOVE what youre doin, please continue. Good stuff my man, thats the stuff we need to see when making a decision on a blade, thanks! :)
It's actually a fair test. Driving the blade into wood for two thirds of it's lenth and then standing on it is an effective way of determining how brittle the steel is.
As a general rule: The harder the steel is, the more brittle it is. A survival knife has to able to withstand a fair bit of misuse. If it cannot then avoid it.
@leighrate ,driving a Kabar for two thirds into wood is a fair test?and you think this knife is not good for survival?shit man.have you ever been in a "survival situation?".a real one.not a camping like one.this Kabar does all and more one could ask for.only shit for brains call this knife too brittle for surival.standing on a knife full weight.there is no way you knife need to do that or close like acivities in survival situations.survival is about using your head and knife in smart ways.
1) I have been in life and death situations that have need a good knife.
2) The reason why I think that is a fair test is that there is less leverage on the blade two thirds in rather than the one third that you would use if you had to dig or pry with it. D2 is known to be brittle and has a demonstrated tendency to shatter. Its a good small knife steel, but no really suited to Ka-Bar sized knives.
Ka-Bars are good knives but I think the 1095 would have performed better.
@leighrate ,I think this Kabar D2 performed pretty well .dont you think?the USMC Kabar broke easier than this knife, except for the very top of the tip.but the tang help up longer than the tang of the USMC Kabar.not all D2 is that brittle.many are.not all.Kabar treat their steels very well as we can see.Kabar is a very good knife.so many soldiers in life and death situations have depend on it and praise its use.and that was the 1095 steel.and that is the USMC Kabar ...
@leighrate ,the Kabar Warthog did do very well also.and that one was 1095 steel.so i general i agree with you on 1095 steel is better than D2 for larger than 5 inch blades.but this D2 Extreme knife did do more than you would expect from D2 steel i think
This is funny, I read a forum post a couple years ago where a guy was battoning a piece of wood and it broke a halfmoon shape out of it. D2 is a very hard steel not ment for either type of abuse.
@ShockTrauma69 ,agreed.Kabars have shown what they can do in combat.they do work.and they are lightweight.which is a BIG pro when confronting an enemy
@ShockTrauma69 ,plus that in my opinion the Ka-bar has by far the best grip ergonomics of all those knives.another thing very important for a soldier.
@fappometer14 leverage? we wanna see how strong the knife is and if it bends or stays rigid. If you just leave the tang sticking out, well fuck, then all we get to see is tang strength.
This physically hurt to watch. It was like watching a fellow Jar-Head being tortured. Was it necessary? I suppose. Was it freaking awful to watch? YES!
Take that Kabar to Arlington! It damn well deserves it! Semper Fi, D2.
Ka-Bars are great knives... Unless you weigh over 200lbs and intend to bounce on it. I've owned mine for about 5 years and used it for everything from slicing french fries to clearing 1" tree limbs. It's the standard model, not one of these new ones. For a $40 knife, that's good in my book.
I bought mine at the PX for $40. I've seen them somewhere else (online I believe) for around $45-$50 though now I see them mostly around twice that for some reason.
@killerkowalczyk these knives are good no doubt about it. ask what's the best knife and you'll get a different answer from everyone because it's based on preference. but in my opinion if you want the best look into fallkniven, strider, busse and rat cutlery. those, in my opinion are top. if cash isn't an issue a good custom knife is probably the best option.
i had a knife tip brake in a tree i stabbed it bent it side ways and snapp when u stab atree wih like bich bark tree but brown it is like they bleed but it just water they drink frmthe ground taste quite sweeeeeet
This knife took a lot of abuse, and these videos were more or less stress tests showing things that you might encounter.. still.. its always sad when a knife breaks..
Have you ever been in a rollover? probably not. all 4 or 5 passengers try as hard as they can to get out, and weapons ammo cans, radios, mounts, assault packs going everywhere in the cab, it makes it near impossible to get to any other door. the old design for combat locks make it really fucking hard to open when the vehicle is upside down. (new ones are much, MUCH better.) and good luck getting out the turret when its tipped over. I mean it depends on the situation.
take one of the knives that has passed a lot of tests and baton it through broken knives! I was surprised at how long that lasted too
