Way back i used to lay in bed listening to john peel when he played this track and i was hooked.every track on script of the bridge is brilliant and bands and tastes may come and go but i still play this album regularly when im driving.Thank you john peel,R.I.P mate
nah U2 are shockingly bad , joy division, the smiths, joy division, jesus and mary chain, echo and the bunnymen, the sound, stone roses, new order, house of love are the real 80's classics! unfortunetly im 15 so i wasnt alive in the 80's but still music from the 80's is all i listen to!
I'll go with you on the Smiths, a great band, but come on. In the 80's there were so many good bands. Great ones. U2, Echo and the Bunnymen, New Order, Simple Minds and yes The Cure. The 80's were a great time for music. I'm almost 55 now. I grew up in the 70's, but when the 80's came, music was revolutionised, I hope I spelled that right. LOL. Everybody has there own opinions on when the best music was made. To me the 80's were it.
Another thing I've noticed is many bands like Interpol, in this 'Indie' and 'Shoegaze' group, is many tend to substitute catchy, original hooks and riffs for a guitar sound for the sake of sounding big or ethereal rather than original and creative, leading to an armada of repetitive 'indie' music which typically uses the same guitar chords and vocal lines. This is why I turned to this decade of music, for today it seems every sound and melody imaginable has been thought of.
@GHBenny Good point - I've thought the same thing now and then when trying to figure out how to write good music; I find I can easily come up with something that sounds ethereal and expansive, but being a bit of a pop/punk fan I suddenly trip over my complete lack of ability to come up with a melody or hook. I'm a huge admirer of Interpol and I think they do a great job, but a catchy element now and then would vastly improve things, at least in my eyes. heard of My Bloody Valentine?
The difference is that this band never went downhill in the end, just changed their sound to become more experimental without ever losing their artistic ability to create a mood and tunes. Both created debut albums that each contained tracks all worthy of being single material, but that was pretty much it for that group after TOTBL. I personally think the lyrics in 80's songs are far better/relevant than any of that manufactured gloom found in Interpol, Editors and White Lies.
These guys are awesome. Great stuff. I got into them in 03 around the same time that I got into Interpol. Too bad Interpol sucks now ugh so disappointing. Their only good album was TOTBL, and few songs from the other albums. Theres a new band that sounds how Interpol's sound should of evolved to if they would of kept it up, no wonder Carlos left the band. New Interpol "like" band is called UNI_FORM check em out..
there must be something wrong, boys, the Chameleons are sill not credited as the bst band of the 80s, and they were from Manchester!! long live Manchester,Madchester and Man U!!!
@simionTheOne Really? the Cure? never understood why they were so popular, but fair enough...everyone has their own special memories of the 80s..mine are mostly asociated with the Chameleons and The Smiths
@tstsullivan797 nothin beats the cure if you ask me all those CD's all totally different sounds all those B-sides that were worthy of being CD's on their own i don't know, but i've never heard instrumental music with such a voice like the cure has but that's just me just got the first CD of the chameleons though.. wow what a sound! & got the 2nd on record, sounds awesome ;D but just got the cure discography of 2.5gig & WOW :D nevermind haha

@GHBenny Keyword in all your gibberish "personally" which amounts to CRAP CRITIQUE! Music is music and should be allowed to EVOLVE!
