  • If this was a man offering a random child presents to help him try out his "invention" there would be public outrage!

  • I think a helmet may have been a safer solution for that kid :)

  • @john100848 Not really. They do more harm than good.

  • It's not good because with that thing you cannot properly filter in traffic jams

  • get ink on the wrong guy in the wrong car then your gone hahah

  • It may be illegal - Criminal damage. Two wrongs do not make a right.

  • I had a similar concept last winter when I was walking to and from work on the sides of the roads. Where I live they only plow the roads and nothing else. Not even the shoulders and sidewalks. So what I did was I held out my arm holding on to my 18" Maglite. Dinged a few cars on the first day. Then for some reason they all started going way around me on the second day. Unfortunately that's what it took for people to give me room to walk.

  • Most motorists are 'uneducated' when it comes to ''other'' road users.

    Cycle lanes DO help.

As it indicates to the common uneducated motorist WHERE to stay on the road.

NOT a l l motorists are aggresive towards cyclists.

What with price increases of petrol, cyclisting and cyclists will become more common.

Educate motorists to look for 'OTHER' road users besides modes of transport like their own.

  • It seems like criminal damage to me and the kid will be in trouble, not the person with the "wonderful" idea!

  • yeah resort to damaging other peoples property, thats very good that NOT.

  • nice rack 1:45

  • good against cyclists who overtake too close as well.

  • @carlitox472 yeah true, it needs respect on both sides.

  • @carlitox472 I think I find that more annoying than motorists... at least you expect it from cars.

  • Why did you use a child as a test case?!

  • @vonNaaat As I think they struggle the most as they are less safe than adults on London's road.

  • Far better is a magnetic mine with a 30 fuse activated on release.

  • We used to sell pretty much the same device when i worked at evans cycles years ago, but ours was a thin plastic arm with a big flourescent pink disc at the end. We sold shed loads of them but it never changed the way people drove. if anything i think cab firms round the shop had a book on how many they could hit each day!!!!

  • was that a joke? i didt find it funny

  • Cyclists need their own lane. A dedicated lane on every street. It's a joke that I have to risk my life to do the right thing, and ride a bike to work.

  • Maybe cyclist would get more respect if they respected the road rules.

  • @beno7398 Maybe you should be incinerated inside your own two ton piece of metal....

that's how you explain the fact that you think cyclists don't get ''respect''?

Wake up and look around you, what do you think is more of a menace to the safety of road users: Cyclists or motorised vehicle drivers?

  • For fucks sakes. SO are you saying cyclist can break the law because they are not in 2 tons of metal?

Cyclists want all the rights of a vehicle, yet they don't want to obey all the road rules! just ones they feel like obeying.

It's a 2 way street, metaphorically. A cyclist cannot expect to take up an entire lane in peak hour traffic, then break the road rules when they please, because they are a cyclist. Get on the road an obey laws, or get off the road and do as you please.

  • @beno7398

When in my comment did I say that cyclists can break the law because they're not in 2tons metal scraps?

And you're damn right cyclists want all the rights, especially the right to ride safely, without being dragged under vehicles or experimenting near death experiences, just because a car/lorry driver is in a hurry.

You probably never rode a bike in your life if you think cyclists cannot occupy an entire traffic lane, especially at night or when is rainy,on a busy road...

  • I have never rode a bike? LOL I ride everyweekend. My mountain bike that is. So yes I do have experience riding. I keep off th road as much as possible. It's easy 2 do here since I never ride in the city. My favorite way 2 get 2 the mountain trails is 2 put my bike on the rack on the back of my car. Then I know Im safer.

Let me ask you this. When there is a empty parking lane on the side of the road, and only a single traffic lane, why do cyclists still ride on the main lane delaying traffic?

  • @beno7398 The video in question is specifically related to a city bike riding environment, when I mentioned you probably never rode a bike before,I meant to say in such an environment,to which I was right, wasn't?

In London, where I live, there is NEVER a empty parking lane, due to the very nature of the heavy traffic in this city.

Obviously a cyclist have to make sure he's being seen by motorists, especially in bad weather or at night, therefore trying to use most space on a single traffic line.

  • @floydjr29 I have rode in Busy environment. What I'm saying is, when there is the gutter on the left, then 2-3 metres of empty parking lane, then an unbroken line, then the main flow of traffic, why on earth do a lot of cyclist think they should ride right on the line or even 2 the right of the line? Its like they are asking 2 get hit. When Im in that situation I ride as close to the gutter possible. The only cyclist that piss me off are 1 that get in the way with no reason,

  • @beno7398

There are bad cyclists, just as there are bad drivers,my point is that a bad driver is much more likely to injure someone or even take a life.

Therefore,in my opinion, focus should be in reasserting driver's attitude towards others, especially here in the UK.

  • @beno7398 That's not to mention that whenever there are parked cars and a single line of traffic flowing, countless times you have people opening up doors on you,so you also have to give enough space for such things not to happen.

As you can see,is hard for a arrogant/selfish driver that cannot be bothered to wait 5 secs and think of other people's safeness before trying to take you over in a single taffic lane to understand how dangerous riding a bike can be,but also how satisfying.

  • @floydjr29 Oh and I also hate cyclist that break laws because they think they can. I was driving down a 1 way street once and as i came around a long blind bend I had 3 moronic cyclists coming straight at me. I Just laid on the horn they probably shit themselves. It's a very well known street, I'm sure they new it was a one way, just because they are cyclists they think they can do as they like.

  • @floydjr29 I give up. BYE. No point trying to explain common sense to moronic people. With the amount of moronic cyclist I have seen I could not have the slightest sympathy if they get hit. I know there are few good cyclists but the moronic ones stand out and most are moronic around here, therefore I couldn't care less about them

  • @beno7398 There are moronic drivers too. Get off your high horse, next you'll be saying that cyclists don't pay road tax.

  • @beno7398 Man,you're just a little moaner, aren't you? Looking for a bloody excuse to get pissed off with everyone,or, in this case:cyclists.

Relax and be happy man, stop moaning about the single line or one way and why oh why did the bad cyclist cut across the fucking line and just try and be more considerate to others.

Look at you, honking the honk and scaring cyclists shitless...

    C'mon man,give it a rest,life is too short!

  • @floydjr29 For fucks sakes your an idiot. U couldn't think of anything 2 say in ur last comment so u just started attacking me.

My point is if u ride in the way when there is no need to EXPECT 2 GET HIT. U can't ride right on the line in a 70 zone & think drivers will not get pissed off. If a driver hits u, the driver is at fault. Even if cyclist was riding in a 70 zone on the edge of the main traffic lane, I have seen that many times.

If u stupid enough to do that, then bad luck if u get hit.

  • @beno7398 No point trying to argue with you mate, life is too short.

The amount of shit you wrote here just goes to show who's really moronic.

I do hope you are the exception to the rule, but knowing the streets of London, unfortunately you aren't.

It just makes me sad , really.

  • @beno7398 you should read this

    .direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069837

  • I'd like to have some sort of spray paint mechanism that I can activate on my handlebars, so i can spray it everytime a car speeds past me on the bus lane.

  • replace the crayon with a sharp spike

scratchy scratchy all along the side if to close

  • I've thought about this before, with one of them orange flags you tend to see high up, just arranged differently.

I think the one in the video is a bit short, but I guess it can help add to a visual cue to move over, but of course we know... even this won't help.

Problem with these are when it actually comes to narrow places, when you yourself wants to filter through traffic etc...

    Still, nice idea.

  • As a motorist and former cyclist I do give bikes the proper respect (distance being just one factor) however it annoys me when cyclists cut you up, don't indicate and drive on pavements at full speed round blind corners, having no consideration for anyone else. Not to mention the idiots that cycle while texting and cycle through red lights. Good idea though.

  • Very creative. Why not have a revolving sprinkler mounted on a helmet spraying everyone nearby with urine?

  • Thanks for the comment, not sure about the urine though...lol

  • It is Dodgy on a narrow Congested Road like that, you cant trust the Cars not to Hit Him as he is so Short .Better to have an Adult ride behind him on a Bike more Safer on London Streets. In an Ideal World it would be like the Netherlands with Safe Cycling Infrastructure instead of London.

  • This reminds me of the handlebar scrapers and the "lollypop" reflectors.

Saddest thing I ever saw was a lollypop that had the reflector head snapped off where a driver had possibly come too close. The cyclist had left it on there as a big orange spike.

  • I think a horn, and plenty of eye contact will help.. and a helmet cam.

  • The Highway Code states that motorists should give a car length, that's miles more than an arm. We need more. Lorries whizz past us and we don't want to be caught on that.

  • I don't think a motorist would see it, and he/she may hit the 'arm' and knock the cyclist off. I wouldn't want a 'permanent arm'. I think a Government campaign would be good (ie at cinemas, posters etc) and for us to have more -off road cycle paths. Drivers chatting on mobile phones or texters, would not be looking at the road.

  • No Helmet? tut tut

  • haha lol, well I do have one, but it was hard enough to find a brave kid, even he got a ball as a gift ;)

  • ..and what do you expect the helmet to do against a car? He's hardly likely to fall off on his own in those conditions. ;-P

  • Go and ask a doctor from the head trauma ward 'is wearing a helmet a good idea' and see what they tell you. At any speed, against anything they are often lifesavers.

  • I worked in a hospital for 14 years, mate. They are not qualified to answer road collision analysis questions - they are qualified to patch you up.

Have you ever seen or met anyone who has been hit with a vehicle who wore a helmet? I have, and I've seen their family waiting in Intensive Care for them to come around.

They are not lifesavers, they are insurance-claim savers, they stop minor scratches and bangs and are only tested for such

  • So you think that if someone is hit at 30mph, by a car and they're not wearing a helmet... they will be just as well off as someone in the same conditions who is? Wow.... thanks professor but I think I'll go with the advice of my friend the doc in the head trauma ward.

  • Your simply not looking at the facts here: they are tested to ANSII and SNELL standards in Europe (even less in the US iirc). These tests cover a weighted drop from 1.5m at 12mph (equivilent to a fall from a stationary bike).

I know of one guy in Plymouth who was hit at 30mph. He spent several weeks in ICU and is severly disabled as a result. This included extensive brain damage.

IMO it is far more practical to address bad drivers than stick a minimal protection of a helmet on a cyclist.

  • - You should have an adult test it for many reasons... Don't make a kid test this!

    - Creates too much drag. Make it thinner horizontally

    - Many many times a bicyclist will WANT to safely and closely pass parked/slow cars, posts, people, etc. What to do about that?

  • Hey you :)

thanks for your feedback. I think it's good when it's not too thin as it should warn drivers. Otherwise it would be like a stop sign in transparent colours. I don't want to paint cars, people and posts.

Well and I think I have to trust people to be responsible. Kind of an ideal world, I know ;)

  • Get work Hanja. I've gotta get me an arm against harm! x

  • Haha - useful. Can you make one for vans that pull out of a parking space backwards without looking? And another for people opening their car doors without looking?

D'you film the cyling through London impression at the beginning too? If so, how pray tell. I'd like to shoot something like that here in Amsterdam.

  • Thanks for your comment! :)

I should work out an all-round tentacular for everyones needs lol

Yep I did the filming all myself. I sticked my camera at the front of my bicycle and it didn't take me long to find cars driving on the cycling path.. I thought Amsterdam is the cycling city? Nope?

  • good stuff :)

  • valuable n fun!

  • Arm against harm = Awesomeness

  • Fantastic :)
