i never knew that instrument existed and i am blown away. i have an urge to produce a movie and have nothing but this man and his stick for the score.
it's great to be able to see real talent, and not the crap we are shown on t.v. (x-factor e.t.c.)and hear on the main radio stations, i love you tube.
You have raised the bar such that this instrument should be considered not only a serious instrument for the playing of classical music, but I hope also talented composers will start to write for this instrument and include it in concert hall performances alongside the rest of the stable of accepted classical instruments.
I'm a writer and performer for various stringed instruments. Ever since I've discovered this instrument I've wanted to know more. I want to buy one. I know how I should go about getting one, but I simply want to know what kind of budget I should have for this. I know when I was shopping for guitars and basses I liked to shoot my budget anywhere from 900 to 1300 new for an instrument just based on quality and craftsmanship. Does anybody know what range I could be looking at for the chapman stick?
@MattTMcCool New Sticks are between $2000 and $3000. The manufacturer is Stick Enterprises. One thing I tell people is that used Sticks sell for almost the same as new ones. The bad news is cheap ones are hard to find. The good news is you can buy one try it for a while and get almost or all of your money back if it is not for you.
@assofan Good question, i get asked this even when people are standing 8 feet away. I am tapping and holding the string on to the fret. As soon as the string hits the fret it vibrates (think of hitting a dowel rod on the edge of a table, the part hanging over vibrates) There is enough vibration for the magnetic pick-up at the bottom to amplify the sound. You will see guitar and bass players doing the same thing. The Stick is set up primarily to be played this way.
I've known about the instrument for a couple of years and my interest in it have grown bigger each day. I really want to learn to play it, but that requires me acquiring a Chapman Stick, and they are quite expensive. Well I'd better save up.
Thank you Bob for another great video. You are a grand master on the Stick both in techical as in musical respects and finally you are also doing hires vids which makes watching them much more appealing :)
This classical transcription demonstrates also your background and expertise with ancient music played on the Stick one more time and it is well worth listening even for non-Stickists.
Thanks for sharing these excellent two and a quarter minutes with the world!
You are completely undaunted! (And amazing, as usual!!!) I love your arrangement. The light quality of your Stick playing works perfectly with the jovial quality of Mozart's style. My favorite is still your arrangement of Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor". What's next maestro???
Amazing.

Dear Bob,
Please do a version of Bach's Badinerie on the Chapman. That would be awesome.
Thanks,

How do you go about learning such an instrument? @bobculbertson
I'd imagine playing classical guitar, and also learning piano might help?
Would love to be this talented at one instrument, great vid! :)
