  • Unfortunately most video cameras flatten the dynamics in order to keep the sound from blaring or distortingl The Duo-Art has great dynamics, but these are lost however the sound is clear and interesting. The piece may be played a little too fast, but that is often the case with rolls. Nice piano, interesting instrument!

  • My G-pa had an upright player piano. You had to pump the peddles to get it to play. He fixed it with a vacuum cleaner. It had forward and backwards and variable speeds to boot. Saved that poor piano from getting trounced on by all the grand kids, arguing over the proper tempo. Played that thing a lot.

  • thanks for that, I did wonder as I have a Model 12 Weber Grand on its side in my workshop and I did know that the pump would unscrew as I have rebuilt a number of these pumps. You must agree it did look weird. At Mo have the Weber and alsoa Welte Mignon Licensee, but not in the same piano!

  • Why is the pump turning in the wrong direction and seems to be too slow????

  • @BruderStarkton Yes, yes! An explaination in order here: it is an optical illusion, due to the camera. A) the piano will not function correctly if the pump is running too slow. B) turning the pump in the wrong direction will cause the wheel to un-screw itself from the pump. PS~ this video was taken about two weeks before the "final product" was delivered to its owner! It has been on U-T longer than I have....EJS (low-tech specialist)

  • Yech-a-rama. That's so un-musical

  • @aardvaark069 Pobody's nerfect Aard...try the aardvaark salad next time--it's music free!

  • ThankYOU, hokum... what a LOVELY old machine. I sincerely LOVE it. ...jonycuddlesgert/YouTube...

  • What is going on here? How is this playing by itself? THat's just what I want my piano to do!

  • what means the pedal-electric ?

only the pedal is driven by solenoid ?

or to vaccum by pedaling ?(not electric vaccum motor )

    sorry my poor english ...

  • FYI~ this piano was completed gutted of all player parts as first encountered but every effort made to restore to factory original specs. Many thanks to Bob Stryker, NY for stack and other original D/A components. The owners even got the pedals, bench and lid upon delivery...

  • 1) Is that Josef Hoffman playing? I love this roll.

    2) I loved your performance in that PBS show on one-man bands, years ago, and I'm glad to have the chance to tell you that I've shown my tape to various friends over the years. There are a couple of artists in that who I skip over, but you're not one of them!

  • Indeed a truly amazing piece of musical machinery, and it sounds like a live performance of a absolute first class piano duo, only lacking the component of human error.

    But indeed:

    Impressive

  • Beautiful restoration. Piano expresses very nicely.

  • Very nice restoration. I hear all of the dynamics the way it shuold be.

  • What is this tune?

  • Wonderful

  • very beautifull... is it electric only? or pedal and electric? I don't see any pedal-lyre at all??

  • Most Duo-Art pianos were electric, however very few were both or just pedal operated. This one is electric.

  • I believe in the UK most were pedal-electric and a few were electric only, I just got a pedal-electric Steck from the UK

  • My dad taught piano at Colorado State, and he had a studio with an old Duo-Art Steck in it, from which the mechanism had been removed years earlier. I used to open the door to look at the sawed-off hoses and wish it was all still there.

I just found out today that they made Ampicos in East Rochester, which is part of the town I live in. They tore the factory down just a couple of months after we moved to town, last year, and I first noticed the chimney today, with AMPICO spelled out in bricks.
