Fascism is the state married to Big Business and the Military, hardly left wing. It is extremely Patriotic and Nationalist (commies are internationalist) and in the case of the Nazis, racist (commies believe all men of all races should rise up against the oppressor). To equate Fascism with the left is ludicrous. Goldberg's book is horse hockey.

Yeah, as though big business like Krupp Steel, I.G. Farben, Mercedes, etc., didn't do just fine in Germany in the 30s. TRUE Socialism requires worker ownership, but in Nazi Germany, private capitalist individuals owned the means of production. Hitler had labor leaders arrested in May 1933, and sent to Dauchau. He then set up the Nazi Labor Front - a joke. Between 1932-36 worker wages FELL, from 20.4 to 19.5 cents/hr for skilled labor, even less for unskilled.  Management did ok.

That kind of reminds me of what Obama is doing with GM right now. Hitler wanted VW to make the people's car so he took over their businesses and told them to make the VW bug. Now Obama seems to be duplicating that with GM and wants them to make the "people's green car".

Other examples of Nationalization in the U.S.: Northwest Ordinance of 1789 & Louisiana Purchase, 1803...one third of American land still owned by gov't.; World War 1: railroads nationalized; 1930s: the TVA; 1980's: Resolution Trust Corp. seizes contol of hundreds of failed S & Ls.; after 9/11, gov't nationalizes private security firms at airports & puts them under authority of Transportation Security Admin. Hitler did seize VW for the SS, he did not nationalize the maker, Porsche.

Here's some more "socialism": fire departments; law enforcement; city trash collectors; public school teachers; highway department people; your mail carrier; judges; district attorneys; all elected representatives...in fact, anyone who is paid by federal, state, and local taxes, has their insurance & retirement paid by federal, state, and local taxes. Don't know what we'd do without that "socialism."

Most of those things are legitimate govt functions that are not designed to rule over our lives other than our public school system which is designed by the state to brainwash the masses.

Funny, I knew you would say that...let's blame it all on those brainwashing public school teachers. Yeah, there are a few bad apples, but the majority of those people are dedicated, & have to put up with ungodly crap...being sassed by kids & fussed at by parents, plus crazy administrative paper work & on top of that, having to give up much of their free time taking "mickey mouse" education courses. Hats off to our dedicated public school teachers!!!

It is my fault that they volunteer to work in a state run system? The same stuff you are are talking about are the same stuff anyone who works in any govt organization says like the post office. They always complain and one day they go postal and shoot someone. Its not their fault but the system they are in. Its a real crying shame that teachers are going the same route homocidal postal worker went.

I think its funny that liberals get pissed off at this book and write it off but it really isn't saying liberals are fascist but simply a history of the progressive movement in this country and how similar it is to the fascist of Europe. Let them get mad! I've read it and did some investigating of my own and couldn't find anything wrong about his conclusion.

It is extremely insulting for me as a European to hear some American hobby intellectual lecture on fascism. These two men have no idea what fascism means and entails. If you follow their logic, contemporary Europe is a fascist stronghold. Laughable! We struggled with fascism some decades ago and know very well what it is. The liberal social-democratic system we have now is quite the opposite.
