As a black man that lived abroad in Kyoto and Tokyo, I found it be a rather interesting cultural experiment to gauge the different reaction I received from people. As far as the women were concerned I got the feeling that many of them considered black men to be inherently dirty and ugly. It was kind of funny that there was an assumption that I did not understand the language, and the dichotomy between what was said in English vs Japanese, which does make sense in a somewhat insular culture.
