I remember as a 17 year old with my girlfriend in tow closing the door and listening to that incomparable Suzanne album for hours. Leonard Cohen with his poetry books, Greek hangout and depressive but unusual voice, high profile folk ladies doing the Mecca to visit was far and away the most interesting artist of his day.
It definitely passes the feeling along. those that don't understand.. go to another place.. I understand.. it is art, just like any music and/or painting... IT TELLS A STORY... what else can one say?
my father bought me up to this song im a 94 kid and can appriciate greatly on cohens talent. this is just pure amazing. no matter what age. some songs never grow old <3
Another beautiful song by Leonard, I just can't get over how such beautiful music could come from one soul, so many beautiful songs he has, He deserves his place in the hall of fame. I have loved this man since age 3.
Mr. Leonard, another person already shared what I wanted to say, you are fearless, you have shared your spirit with your fans, the good, the bad, but all in all you are non judgmental and you have taught me as much about forgiveness as Christ has, and a few others, including my own life experiences. Thank you Mr. Cohen.
Personnally I enjoy Leonard Cohens music. In response to certain posts , I can only say it is a question of choice , taste and culture . A singer , song will touch certain people more than others and give them the incentive to listen to more works of the singer . To say outright that a singer is no good without having listened to some of his music does not honour the work the singer put in to it.
The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error." John Stuart Mill, On Liberty (1859)
@healhurt Since YouTube adopted the thumbs-up-down rating I often read the comments of users complaining about other people's thumbs down ratings. Except of annoying, I find these comments entirely pointless. My quote above was intended to convey exactly the point that everyone is entitled to her/his opinion/taste, even if that means disliking Cohen, Mozart or Beethoven. Cheers!
@jabberwocky8025 I agree with what you say about taste. But pressing the dislike button on a video to me would mean a serious annoyance over the music I'm watching- so I'd share renovawolborg's question. Why would one hate Cohen?
@monte19832009 Το me, on the other hand, it could mean that: one dislikes Cohen in general, this song in particular or my video rendition of it, the people who listen to this song, the world, etc.; it can even mean that one has no reason at all. My naive answer to the question would be that not everyone's brain is wired in the same way (neuronically speaking). And this may be because of cultural, developmental, genetic or other unknown reasons.
@jabberwocky8025 This hypothesis also explain why people have the aesthetic preferences they do. The question is: 'what should we do about it?'. My humble opinion is that we should be men (or women) about it and get over the fact that most of the people in the world we live in prefer listening to Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, or Britney Spears rather than Mozart and Beethoven. :P
@jabberwocky8025 - I don't see renovawolborg or indeed very many Youtube commenters trying to "silence the expression of an opinion". They're merely expressing their disagreement with said opinion, in much the same way that the people who clicked 'Dislike' were expressing their distaste for this song. Entitling people to their opinion does not preclude criticism thereof. Nor should it, as a viewpoint isolated from justification, argument or discussion is worthless to all but its holder.
@PuissantAlgernon - Ok, let me try to make my point clearer by means of an example. Let us suppose that we have a guy and let us name him 'Bud the Sixpack'. Bud is one of the persons that pressed the dislike button and he did so precisely because he did not like the song. Now, you can criticize Bud. You can say that he has a bad music taste or that he did not got the point of the song. You cannot, however, dispute the fact that he did not like the song. That would be a matter of fact, just as
@PuissantAlgernon the fact that I am sitting and responding to you right now. Let us suppose that you criticize Bud's taste. On what basis are you doing that? Are there any criteria of taste? Can you make someone like or dislike Mozart by means of a rational argument? Because if there are, you are wasting your time commenting on youtube videos. You should go ahead and publish your own aesthetic theory.
Now, I'm pretty sure this is the case with matters of (aesthetic) taste. Lately, however,
@PuissantAlgernon I have become more and more convinced that it applies to all kinds of arguments. It is rare that you can convince someone to change his social, political or even scientific beliefs by means of rational argument. ''It rarely happens that Saul becomes Paul". What happens in cases of unanimity is that the opponents of the opposing view have simply died out. But discussing that would take us far far away
@jabberwocky8025 I just want to say the I really love your quote,"It rarely happens that Saul become Paul", or rather your use of it here. I don't know if it's yours, as you, yourself use quotations, but it sure suits this poem and the discussion you're having with some other fan. Thank you
@jabberwocky8025 This is beautiful! You can tell a lot of love went into this. I heard it the other day and luckily stumbled on your video which does the song complete justice. Bravo.
My Leonard, personal to each one that loves him. This can't be what goes on with other fans of other stars. Leonard has shared himself; good bad and ugly; most beautiful, gentle, funny, witty, charming, and won me at least over bit by bit, year by year until now he feels like a very special old friend of the highest quality that I just adore!! I am so grateful for the internet at last I can see him not just hear him and read his words with the infrequent concert. Love to you Leonard. xoxox
When I was little I thought that he was singing to a gypsy woman who had befriended his wife... The line "my brother, my killer" I thought it was "my brother might kill you"... :P
Jonathan Coulton's cover was the first version of this song I heard. This one has much more feeling, but Coulton's version is in his own style, which I enjoy. It's difficult to say which version I like better.
Although this version has backup vocals. Da da da da da da......
i went with my family to a concert of his, it was expected to be 2 hours long, it was 4 hours long, 5 or 6 encores, full house and standing ovation and the subway system provided the transport free of charge
I'd be a fool (and a blind one, at that!) not to agree with Thisgoesupto11 's comment. This is without a doubt the most amazing montage I've seen for any video; and I'd love to thank you for your effort and your dedication to Famous Blue Raincoat.
Having listened to Mr Cohen since the age of seventeen, I'm still deeply in love with this particular song forty years later... and to discover it again in a new light through the way you chose to present it is an equally unexpected joy! Thanks again!
