People need to remember that this was 2009, the first year of the Insight, and it's been refined since then. The bias against it is palpable in this review, but the Prius is more of a true "hybrid" if one wants to pay the extra $4 or 5k. I personally wish they call it something besides "Prius" as it just doesn't sound right. Same with "Yaris."
I always hated the prius... until I got one. The 2010 has tight steering and handling, is peppy, especially in power mode, and delivers over 42mpg with a foot made of LEAD. Excellent car, though I highly suggest getting one that is fully loaded... There is a reason why there are virtually no insights on the road. What's the point of getting a hybrid if it can't propel itself at ANY speed on pure electric? Plenty of ugly, fuel efficient cars on the road, and they don't require giant batteries.
That vette can get low 30s on the highway with 505hp of ass kicking in the bag. Hybrids are for hipsters and suburbanites who think being green is buying something with the right badge........
Prius get better gas? get real. and better on the freeway?????? the freeway is exactly where the prius fail and the mpg drop drastically. CR. how much is toyota paying you to lie and promote there car???
LOL my 1996 audi A6 Avant quattro 2.5 five Cylinder TDi manages 38mpg average under my heavy foot. If I drive it like i'm dead I can get 52mpg average and if do highway I get 60mpg @ 50mph, 55mpg @ 60mph , 50mpg @ 70mph. lol not bad for a 15 year old 4x4 bus. ;)
it's hilarious how pissed people get when their car loses in one of these comparison reviews.they dont really mean anything as they are subjective evaluations influenced greatly by these reviewer's personal preferences and preconceptions. They simply reported on their "impressions", nothing more,or less.Get over it.
They don't really look like each other actually (Insight & Prius). They just share a similar aerodynamic shape for optimum fuel efficiency and because they're both hatchbacks. Insight looks better inside-out for me.
This is a fuking joke. Averege speed of 50-65 on ups and downs i maneged to get 70 mpg on my insight. . Everyday day driving i get no lower than 53!!! 37,000 miles on my car the ex model 2010. New stereo and soundsystem. HID lights and full LED . ligh strip for tha back to actually make use of that unsued red light stripe. Car is awsome. And hell i have fun drifting on that thing. No need for power
I sat in the back seat of the new Honda insight and there was no headroom at all. The Prius has plenty of room in every seat. I was not surprised to see that the Prius vastly outsells the insight. Prius= more power, more mpg, more comfort- the choice is clear. And Toyota is releasing the "Plug In Prius" soon :-)
Consumer Reports just turned cheezee. Pandering to Toyota, I wonder what they got in return? This is why you have to check what many people are saying instead of these clowns. I have an insight just for work and I average 45 MPG with over 20K miles and paid a little over 20K for the car new. The Prius is way over priced and dealers are asking up to 35K for one. While I like the Prius the Insight is a much better deal financially.
I have the 2011 Honda Insight. I have been getting 45MPG combined city and highway. I have driven the 2011 Prius and can tell you dollar for dollar the Insight is the better vehicle. Consumer Reports is a joke, they dont even point out the positives of a vehicle.
One doesn't need a "fuel efficient" car to get good or even decent mpg, the driver just needs to drive the vehicle efficiently ... meaning no unnecessary flooring at stops or unnecessary breaking such as going down a hill - driving more efficiently could increase ones mpg 5-12 mpgs.
@TheHamm91 Yes driver plays a big role. This is also true with fuel efficient cars. Lot of people avg over 65 in prius, get 50 in vw tdi, and 40s in a civic. Smart driver is going to get good fuel economy in all the cars. V8 is still a v8. A good driver might be able to raise its fuel economy if he drives it like a prius but it defeads the purpose of a v8. Getting 30mpg out of a v8 is lot harder than getting 65 out of a prius. V8 are made for fun. If you want eco get an eco car
I test drove the prius, civic and insight and found the insight MUCH more pleasurable to drive than the other two. Btw, I find it quite easy to average between 45-60mpg in my insight, don't know where they came up with 38???
This review disgusts me. I own a 2010 Honda Insight EX and have never gotten lower than 46mpg (highest so far is 60.8mpg now with 6500miles of driving) I consistently average around 52mpg. Thought the Insight is slightly slower than the Prius, it does have plenty of power for highway speeds while maintaining the above 50mpg efficiency, it also does fine on hill climbs.
Mileage depends entirely on driving style. i.e. if you are constantly goosing your car, you could shatter its mileage, even if it is a hybrid, you could be getting some pretty atrocious numbers. So if you have to push the car due to its lack of power, the mileage will fall. This is why there are some very powerful cars, such as the corvette and Corvette grand sport, which can get over 30 mpg when cruising in 6th on the highway, because the engine is powerful enough to push taller gears.
this is the most assault on a car ive ever seen 38 with the insight i don't know how many time you gus tested the car but i seen reviews where ppl got 45 even 1 with the insight pruis battle the prius got 54 and the insight got 51 this is a simple case of just not into a car and trying to destroy it and just like the guy before said the sat in backwards and at the lowest part or the car like who sits like that
The Insight I tested got 45 MPG in stop and go traffic. All of the Toyota dealers here want over $28,000 out the door with taxes, tag transfer, destination charge, etc. I can buy an Insight EX for well under $23,000 out the door. That makes buying a Prius $5,000 more or about $200/mo. over a 5 year period on a car note. I'll take the $200/mo. savings and take the Insight, thank you.
38 mpg on the 2010 insight seem a bit low, maybe they tested with a heavy footed driver, because most owner get better mileage than the EPA rating at 40 city and 43 hwy.
The 2010 Prius needs more power cause it weighs about 400 lbs more than the Insight. I own a 2010 Insight and it does not "struggle" to maintain highway speeds! 38 mpg? CR, how come all the other reviewers, including myself, are easily able to beat the EPA rating of 40/43? Consumer Reports is now as trustworthy as the National Inquirer. Total FRAUDS!. Stick to reviewing washing machines CR!
@proteusn7xr all you're doing is defending your foolish choice. Bottom line: you should've gotten a Prius. For that temporary lapse in judgement to maintain your now retarded sense of individuality, you will regret your decision for the life of your POS "hybrid" that is so pathetic, it can't even run on pure electric energy... pfft, what a joke.
Notice how the guy puts his head toward the BACK of the rear door to get in the back seat,... the lowest part of the door opening? No one would get in the car like that! We're not stupid CR! We see right thru your phony setup! Folks, when you see stuff like this, that's when you know that you are being scammed. No legitimate car review organization would do this kind of thing. This is clearly intentionally orchestrated to put the Honda Insight in a negative light. Shame on you CR!
I just watched this video again. You can drive the Insight at 40 mph on electric power alone too. Other youtube vids show this being done. Yes there is less headroom in the rear seat of the Insight, but, no one gets into the back seat like the guy in this video. They are intentionally trying to make it look awkward. These look like professional actors. Conclusion: You want a big car, buy a big car. You want a high quality gas-saving commuter, give the Insight a look.
Hmm..., has CR become political? Their test results are 180 degrees apart from all the others. I bought one. I have found the other reviews far more accurate. The Honda is very nice pakage. Maybe Toyota sent CR a check this time and Honda didn't?
this is so fucking biased of course the political nazis of consumer rpeorts owuld hate on the INSIGHT which is 10X better looking and has the same features, the inside is 10000)X times better,
You're right, Consumer Reports does have the most negative review of the Insight that I've encountered (which is a lot)! People were surprised when they rank the Insight 20 out of 21 for compact cars or something. Meanwhile, other sources like Car and Driver and Edmunds has the Insight winning comparison tests.
People need to remember that this was 2009, the first year of the Insight, and it's been refined since then. Man, CR clowned the Insight badly.
"The Insight is really small. You have to duck your head just to get in the back and you're all cramped."
"But the smaller shape would make it more fuel efficient, right?"
"Actually, it gets less..."
"But does the size means it's faster, right?"
"Actually, it's slower...."
