I suppose one obvious reason for the shift I mention in my other comment may be that WWII left Japan so totally devastated that the society adopted a mistrust of the traditional social norms that lead them to such an outcome. It could be the embrace of kawaii and other similar things is somehow a rejection of Bushido social norms.

It is bizarre how Japan went from being a martial or Bushido society to one which is obsessed with kawaii and similar things in the broadest sense with cute cartoon characters or logos, etc. I wonder how older Japanese, those who were children during WWII and before, feel about it.

I am not saying that it is bad as it shows a pretty clear shift away from social norms that lead to the imperialism of the 1930s, but it is very odd to see that shift being so completely to the opposite extreme.

fascinating stuff, I found the how-to video's great, and it strikes me as odd that their general behavior seems to be very serious and reserved. But here you show that they have this fascination (obsession?) with cuteness.

Even going so far as to put cute stuff on official document, something that we would probably see as very anti-serious and inappropriate here. I can't imagine getting a ticket or tax papers with bears or something on them.
