Hey just asking, how many lines of code did it take to make this game? I am thinking about working on a rpg game or a fps game. Which one would be better. (Ie. time to make, how much fun it would be and how much space it would take)
@MukiemukMC For begginers i would recomend to start with Unity or a game engine focused less on coding. Ogre is a big beast and can take a lot of time to master it.
Hey!. I youst want to know how hard is to make like that game?. Because i'll try to make some game and i'll learn C++... But now i am learning how to make website :D
@laura1992mar quick!? haha learning it is not quick. and if you don't want to be a sloppy programmer uni is the way to go. self tut websites you pick up way too many bad habits. and sorry mate are you a fully qualified computer science student are you? no i diddnt think so.
@RanieroSupremo91 The geometry is mostly a collage of stuff from different games and free models. It was just for testing, i import them into 3ds max and then arrange the object properties with the 3ds plugin. Is easy to model a map editor there since you can divide the geometry in "chunks" and snap them to the map grid.
@RanieroSupremo91 LOL all the models and Building/Physics are from Oblivion. He added a bear and some guns from other games, Everything in that house Table food Chairs The "House" are all Oblivion Meshes/Textures
Hey nice game, how long did it take to make? Would it be possible you could send me the source code? I won't use it in my own projects just want to look at it for ideas/greater understanding? If not thanks anyway. Good job!
@CodeMaster9000 same, and im already making games and im 13! You need maths but you shouldn't stress on it too much. Creativity is the backbone of games
@TheHappyWhaleshark Im not that good at math, but having a strong knowdlege about trigonometry its key to game development. Specially the math involving vectors, matrices, quaternions, and translation and rotation calculations. It all depends how much you want to involve in the development, you can use libs wich make everything for you, but its always good to know whats going on uder the hood.
@frumpy10182 psh... no you dont... I cant even add yet without my fingers and i just finished programming my first game using only C++ OpenGL and JAVA... only took me 2 hours and I cant even READ or WRITE! I wrote a program that reads and writes for me... BioWARE bought my game... but I dont know if I got paid enough... they game me $12 and I dont have that many fingers....
LoL... no but yeah you do need to know how to do math @CodeMaster9000
@CodeMaster9000 you dont need to be a math genius, but you do need to know at least all the way up to Algebra 3/Trig., you need to be able to read (duh) and learn the hundreds of functions that u need in C++ or Java
@TrophyEnthusiast am I on a good start if I'm a sophomore in high school who has taken algebra 1 geometry, going to algebra 2, not sure what other math classes yet, have taken animation, and have a lot of experience with advanced logistics in littlebigplanet2 XD lol. But in all seriousness I think I do want to get into this, what classes are best to take and what are good schools for things like programming and making games. (lol sorry my computer science terms are probably off)
@Gosox2525 I know you're responding to someone else, but if I may comment... you NEED Calculus. Even if you don't take it in high school. You say you're going to Alg 2 (I'm assuming you junior year?)... you need to get a lot of math in. I doubled up in math to get in Calculus my senior year, you may want to consider that. You'll also be taking a LOT of math in college... computer science is as much math as it is computers.
@Gosox2525 And as for schools, there are many. I would recommend getting a computer science degree, but a game development degree will work. Computer Science will give you broad knowledge of the subject of computer technology in general, which you won't get with game development. You can focus on game development skills later. Just look up the top CSC schools for your area. If you want game specific and game degrees, look up Full Sail or DigiPen.
@Gosox2525 LASTLY (Sorry for all replies) what jcash said is true, if you can commit. I, on the other hand, NEED to be forced to learn to be taught something or I struggle learning, so I'm going to college for it. I want to focus on game programming, but I would like to learn all aspects of game development. I'm going to UNC Chapel Hill for CompSci, Full Sail for Game Dev, and Vancouver Film School for 3d modeling/animation... but over a LARGE period of time, not consecutively.
@NutritiouslyHigh Thanks alot man, and I was actually thinking about full sail. Know any other good colleges for it? The only other one I found was Tribeca flashpoint in Chicago but it only offers certificate and associates
@Gosox2525 Rochester Institute of Technology is a good one too, or so I've heard (I still prefer Full Sail, but RIT's is still nice) Just make sure that you get into a game DEVELOPMENT degree, not DESIGN (RIT's is more dev than design so it's good). Developers do the real work (programming, art, etc) and designers basically just tell them what to do, but lack the skills to do it themselves. If you ever want to make your own game, game design will not allow you to do that.
@Gosox2525 Also, at RIT, the MS and BS programs for GameDev are structured differently. If you're interested in the college, look up "RIT game development" on youtube and click the Game On video, the guy in the video explains the programs.
@TrophyEnthusiast well like you have been told, you need lots of math , i recomend that you take College Algebra in high school, and if you want take visual basics, as for me i skipped that class and took C++ and Ap Computer Science Java in one year but wasnt able to take the next course (all gameing course) because i am a senior and im taking those 2 classes right now, so yeah you definatly NEED to take BOTH of those classes your junior year and than the next level class your senior year
@CodeMaster9000 Programming is going to require math, patience, creativity (which you have), and of course physics. But do not let that stop you, if you really want to game program or even program a software you can do it. Good question by the way.
@CodeMaster9000 Like many have said, yes it requires math. You say you can't get math, but you didn't include the word "currently." You can do anything with practice, trust me.
@CodeMaster9000 No no no. You need to know algebraic equasions well, and you DO have to know math well, but not super genious or anything. As long has you've taken algebra in school before its fine. Its all about learning the language.
@CodeMaster9000 then learn UDK its a premade game engine its free and it was used to make gears of war mass effect and more check out TheNewBoston for tutorials
@CodeMaster9000 for programming in general? no. for games in 3d? hell yes you need to know your math. the amount of trigonometry you'll need is astounding.
@CodeMaster9000 its not truely math except for algorithms for calculating charater health and such. If your that worried though there is more then one path you can take in game deisgn, most ppl think of programmers but there are actual ppl that do concept art, do strictly environments from various engines, just do a little google research on game develpoment and youll see the many different careers.

How did you do the collision? I know the math and i can code it if i have a set of all the points in the area model, but how do you actually load the points from a file?
@HipHopBeatG Well, i use Ogre 3d, and im really confortable with it, so i'll suggest you download the lib and experiment around with the examples.

@devilazpl The game doesn't actually load max files.
3DS Max exports all geometry in the scene to ogre format (.mesh and .materials) and then the engine load all this.

@Gosox2525 all you really need is a pc,the internet, and will to learn.
step 1)Learn what kind of game you want to make, etc.
step 2)Learn a programming language. Or you could swap 1 and 2, it doesn't matter.
step 3)Learn a gaming engine with its API calls.
step 4)Learn gaming theory, collision detection, etc.
Personally though,If you like programming in gerneral, learn to program first.
Then, learn game programming second.
You'll be more versatile.
