  • Your lack of understanding how to use a product does not make it less efficient, it makes you less efficient. Learn how to use all of the tools at your disposal properly. And don't be a tool yourself.

  • All you have to do in this scenario would be to copy and paste the text in front then use the top layer of text as a clipping mask. Group and job done. You made a real hash of the illustrator version by not doing your homework.

  • AI CS5 fixes the clipping problem by, finally, adding Draw Inside feature. With the same objects, just make sure you do a cut and paste after you select the target object and triggering Draw Inside. This automatically creates the clipping mask. AICS5 took about the same amount of time, maybe less, from FH to simulate your example.

  • iLove and iCan using CorelDRAW, FreeHand, Illustrator and Inkscape, but i'm more familiar with FreeHand due to the ease of use [two thumbs up for FreeHand]

  • Thisshould be called "experienced with freehand" vs "retarded illustrator noob"

  • @David8Parkour Experienced? A simple paste-inside and sub-selection?

I'm not against AI (it's good for drawings and bells and whistles), but in my case, FreeHand remains unmatched for hellish deadlines and fast work delivery. Call me a grumpy dinosaur, but Illustrator still hasn't reached FreeHand's level of intuitiveness and simplicity.

  • Freehand is way better than illustrator.

  • hey how drop image on object??

  • bapak lc .. haha

  • Adobe Illustrator is such a clumsy program - not even CS 5 is up to Freehand MX of 2004.

Offset Printer / Textile Printer / Designer / Layouter.

I think I know my Job.

  • oh yeah i really miss freehand

  • freehand is so yesterday, and yes, this video is biased, learn to use illustrator properly old man.

  • @Otrueniy perhaps you can explain "properly" how to avoid the clipping mask conundrum at the end of the video, no? Counterintuitive much?

  • illustrator sucks ass!

  • noob learn how to use illustrator

  • Have been using Free Hand for 20 years and finally in CS5 there left over that Free Hand could do better. This video is outdated. I can do the same arrangements shown here much faster in Illustrator now then in Free Hand before. Free Hand is dead.

  • Want this magic!

  • You now uses freehand to make a table of 300 rows, 300 columns and center the text with a particular style ... ups! also creates a way for more tables and ... ups! maybe you finished tomorrow ...

Now learn to use Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop ... Welcome to the XXI century!

  • Adobe has to update FreeHand. We do not need a big gun to just draw a logo.

Illustrator do not open correctly FreeHand files.

    We want FreeHand 12 now!!

Adobe debe actualizar FreeHand.

  • AND... If you shop around...

You can buy 2 copies of Freehand and 2 G-Series Macs to run it on for the cost of 1 copy of Indesign... ha ha ha

  • The difference between

    Freehand and Illustrator

    is very much like the

    difference between

    Mac and PC

My 8 year old Mac has never missed

a beat, in the same time I've seen

3 Windows machines byte the dust (sic)

    In 'REAL' work-flow scenarios

FREEHAND clubs Illustrator to Death !

  • I suggest a fair test with one guy experience in FH against another experience in AI. AI might win a few cases, but my money will be on FH being the overall winner. How's that?

  • THIS WAS AWESOME.

However, I just discovered that INDESIGN takes care of all the issues covered in this video. It groups and pastes inside just like FH. As a matter of fact, I've started using ID as my main layout tool now. I was even able to edit the shortcuts menu to make it function about 90% the same as FH. The one feature I miss the most is the kerning/leading by dragging a text box handle. That was INGENIOUS!

  • Clipping masks are a pain in the ass compared to paste inside. ¿Why does the clipping object have to loose it's appearence? Also, trying to align those things is a nightmare, since the bounding box covers the clipping mask plus the object inside!!! In most cases I just need to align the frickin' clipping object, so I have to do it with guides. Adobe: please bring back those features so that our lives become easier with AI.

  • Now I'm depressed. Having difficulties myself working with AI like its shown in this video I always thought its my fault that I can't do things "the right way". If I only would have a closer look into AI and if I only would finally dig really into it I would be able to work much better. And now I find out that others have the same problems and there seems no better way to "do it right" than I'm doing it right now. Sniff.

  • AI is just an old dragon stuffed with slow crap

    FH still rules!

  • Freehand is a marvel in vector program , I still fight all the battles against all my colleagues and superiors in the advertising industry against using AI. a couple of times my job was on the line of fire... but I'll always stand still against Illustrator... Adobe criminals should update freehand, not kill it! Thank you freehand for making our lives easier... we all love you

  • Excellent!

As a FH user since v.1 running on a b/w MacPlus up to current version, I'm rather fond of this software.

Illustrator? It just doesn't do it. It feels wrong, won't perform.. I'd rather use a 1989 version of Freehand than a 2009 Illustrator. If it has fewer functions, FH would let me invent them within the workflow. A "modern" five year old FH runs rings round the AI, just as the vid shows.

Adobe Photoshop is peerless (used that since v.1 too) but Illustrator is a poor stablemate

  • Excellent job in "illustrating" some of the frustrations. As a long time Freehand advocate, I'd love to see more of these great examples. Nicely done. Keep up the good work. I've just favorited your video!

  • Brilliant, fun and right on target! FH knocks out AI in the first round. Looking forward to more. Thanks for posting at FreeFreeHand org.

FH user since v2.0; it's an essential tool in my design arsenal. Adobe gobbled up Macromedia; a shudder went down my spine. "They'll kill FreeHand," was my first thought. I haven't bought an Adobe product since. Why is Adobe determined to pull the rug out from under users who invested money and time in a better vector solution? Corporate greed run amok.

  • Reminds me of the ' Mac vs P.C.' commercials, Except in this 'reality' Microsoft Bought and Killed Apple...

  • I respectfully submit that you may have missed the point of this clip, TheRofu. FH hasn't been updated since Adobe grabbed it, so of course it doesn't benefit from vector software evolution.

Users who choose AI are welcome to it. Adobe's cavalier choice to stunt / kill FH is unethical -- maybe even immoral. It's certainly bad PR for Adobe and very bad news for users who bought FH in good faith (and spent years working with it to create their art). Shame on Adobe. Shame.

  • I'm more looking forward to some development in the open source sector. To make it clear: I hated working with Illustrator from the first day, and for me it is easier to do paths in Photoshop and export them. So I hope some other company or an open source software will win the race. As we saw with Quark X-Press and Indesign nothing is impossible. It will be more useful to target all the efforts in a new developement, than to believe Adobe to give in.

  • Thanks for the clarification, TheRofu. Well said. YES to open source (assuming Adobe will release FH code to the world... yeah, right, considering Adobe's money-grubbing history, don't hold your breath).

Photoshop's pen tool / export feature may be one of its few saving graces. It almost feels more intuitive than the FH pen tool. Somebody at Adobe did something right. Imagine that.

OK... back to work I go. Cheers to you and yours. Art, like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere.

  • Adobe Illustrator CS3/4 makes me cry!

  • Freehand rules, I just can't get to grips with illustrator, it's just so......"aaaaaaaaaaaagh why the F*&%" did it do that???"

  • Official Adobe statement:

Yes we killed Freehand. WHY ? Well, the main reason, (clears throat) er erm... OK!!! It was because it was, well.. ....er... Shuffle Shuffle, Alright -Alright, MAKING US LOOK BAD !

    Happy Now ?

    No... Not Really !!! ;o(

Freehand Still Works, buy it 2nd hand or discounted for a fraction of the cost of the Adobe 'Thing'... Happy vectoring ;o)

  • Adobe = Fail

How can a corp. that big with so many bucks be so 2nd rate ?

Photoshop too, although it's a powerful tool, Many aspects of that are pretty dumb too.

I have a small section of an artwork selected I want to perform an action that requires an auto opening palette, where does the palette open ? right over the selected area I am working on of course... Dumb ! Why not assume you want to see the highlighted area and open it elsewhere ? There are loads of others.

  • I have been using freehand from 2000 - 2006. and I used AI from 2005-now. I have to say that Freehand is a much smarter software compare to AI. just Adobe is rich enough to bought the whole marcomedia MX and kill freehand at the end. AI is somewhat handicap, even I'm very used to it now but still I can't help to say the software is dumb compare to Freehand. this is a good video to point out what's basic that bug designers. 5 stars.

  • Illustrator user here:

    1. I've never had any need to tell instantly if something's grouped or not. I much prefer to see underlying or obscured geometry.

    2. Outline mode (Ctrl-Y) solves this problem neatly and is even more versatile than select-through.

    3. Got me here. This regularly annoys the piss out of me. CS4 fixed some things, but it's still a pain.

  • You can actually select the next object below by clicking Alt Ctrl ] same as Alt Ctrl "right click'

the biggest issue being that you have to take your hand off the mouse.

Clipping masks (Illustrator) on the other hand are a TOTAL pain in the arse.

  • OMG. I am a closet Freehand user for precisely the reasons shown in this video, not to mention many others! VINDICATION!

  • Atomic!.

And this it's only a bit of the huge advantages of FreeHand! Adobe, free FreeHand!

  • Brilliant and so true !!!!! FreeHand must live!!!!!

  • Brilliant.

    Adobe devs, please wake up!

  • Excellent!!
