  • Robben is a master player. No matter what guitar or what amp he plays through he always sounds like himself. That proves the tone is 95% in the players fingers. Great video.

  • jeff beck...........

  • love his phrasing!

  • diggin his tone

  • His tone is the shit! Reminds me a lot of Jeff Beck on Blow By Blow when he was using his Les Paul a lot. Much of his sound comes from the way he articulates/picks the notes with his middle and ring fingers, double stops and chords, etc. There again a lot of parallels with the Beckster. Ford is an amazing guitarist. Never get tired listening to him...

  • I seem to have shit my pants.

  • @bille77 If you don't know why, then you didn't watch the video. lol

  • miiii bluesman

  • オーディエンスの (゜ロ ゜ )ポカーン が一番面白いww

  • incredible. further proof that the best combination in the world is a gibson guitar through a fender amp.

  • @felixgulfin Amen dude! That's what my rig is: Les Paul Trad + through a Blues Deluxe RI! Sexy sounds all day, every day B)

  • I like the backing track most of all...

  • @theElectromagnet : wish to ear you play a real simple piece of music like this BUT with

perfect placement, perfect soundS and such sensitivity ... but probably you're a guitar master ...

For myself, not jazz, not blues BUT great guitar playing with a basic line BUT perfect details,

sounds, timing and sensitivity ... and that's what I wait from a guitar player !!! ... with

Robben, I'm rarely disapointed ... even if I'm not too 'blues' ;)

  • The audience shots look like scientists sitting there observing a "specimen." All they're missing is white lab coats...

  • i love this so

  • 2:51--Dwight Shcrute?

  • He looks like Matt Schofield's dad :) And sounds the same, mmmh makes me wonder..

  • HAHAHA I didn't notice there were students until 3:15~. My first thought was "If I was in that class I'd be asking for my money back"

  • 1. Sahne

  • This isn't the blues, this is jazz. Great jazz playing, but still, this is NOT the blues.

  • @Themology jazzy blues, but its still blues

  • @tasfa10 Every person is entitled to there own opinion.

  • His note selection blows me away.. WTF!

  • 2:49 face : fuck that

  • slickest

  • Wooh...! Woah, man. Nice.

  • untouchable.

  • If he had any more feel he d bust into flames... he s just toooo hot!

  • BB king on 1:34 hehehehe nice2

  • Yep. Good. I mean I can really play but ....this man is just awesome.

  • God has saved a special place in heaven for this guy.

  • Les Paul straight into a Fender Princeton, but still unmistakable RF tone.

  • @zodiacbluesbaby I think it is a Twin, but your point is well made, whether it is a Dumble, or Twin....Les Paul, Telecaster, or his signature Fender model, he still sounds like Robben Ford. Technique is everything and he is nearly peerless in technique. Seeing him live is a great treat.

  • @john26660 Absolutely. I saw him a couple of years ago with Larry Carlton at The Jazz Cafe in London, 300 capacity venue. Used his Jap custom Les Paul into a Twin, super tone, great gig.

  • i love this amazing fat tone of that les paula...beautyful

  • does any one has the sheet book to this dvd?

  • 1:42 he literally rocked the roof

  • Larry Carlton '57 gibson les Paul..

  • yeahh!! This man is AWESOME!!!!!!!

  • great

  • Unrivalled feel. So soulful!! dp

  • Holy shit his tone is amazing

  • @tpritchas14 hahaha check 2:54, those lucky guys are :-O

  • @tpritchas14 With respect, I just don't hear it. Andy Timmons tone, yeah I can listen to that all day. But Robben's tone just sounds muffled and mellow jazzy to me. Boring and usual, nothing special at all. I know he's famous for it and his playing and all, and I keep thrying to give both a chance but he really just does nothing for me. I don't even think his note choices are exceptional. it always sounds like he's just playing random scale notes.

  • @yjmsrv See I'm not a huge fan of Andy Timmon's tone too much as well as the musical genre he plays in so to each his own i guess. If you think his note choices are weak and sound like random scale notes then I feel sorry for you lol. Robben embodies true melody and exceptional phrasing in his solos. But we all have different tastes and are from different musical backgrounds so it's all good man.

  • @tpritchas14 Yeah, you're right, it's all good. appreciate the fair and non-hate filled reply. Still don't hear it though...

  • @tpritchas14 hes plugged directly into a 70s twin reverb....

  • @Killadelphia20 Excellent observation

  • @tpritchas14 Yeah, and 90 % of it is in the fingers!

  • @tpritchas14 Yeah, and 90 % of it is in the fingers!

  • Fail @ 3:09

  • Mais c'est complètement chiant !

  • Is there anything more cool than a worn Gold Top? I don't think so!

  • Most people associate Les Paul's with marshallls, here some absolutelly beatifull sound through a fender, awesome!

  • OH yea ! Love that guitar too. Beauty !

  • hard to find a gibson lp like that.

  • i LOVE the look of that LP man, did you get it with the faded paint, or is it from years of playing?

  • @mikalandrew112 Dude, its almost certainly an original! You can dream!

  • btw all the students committed suicide after the show

  • that gibson just sounds like heaven

  • Left hand technique reminds me of John Scofield

  • that was moist

  • 2:50 either the fat guy in yellow thinks: "wtf is this guy doing" or "what a drag listening to this.." haha

  • emotion , sensibility , musicality ...what else ? Robben , one of the best ever ...

  • holy goldtop batman!!

  • hahaha, oh man! The guy in the yellow shirt at 2:48 totally reminds me of Chris Farley. Just waiting for him to raise his hand and say " Uh, Mr Ford, remember when, uh you jammed with Mr Carleton, was that fun huh?" hahaha...!

  • i love his phrasing.. anyone can tell me what scales hes using? doesn't sound like the regular blues scales.. modes?

  • @attu89 definately some dorian in there on 2:22.. also hes playing ouside notes probably a semi-tone up from c min pentatonic to get that fusion sound.. sounds great dosent it.

  • @mifski it certainly does! i'm stuck in a rut with pentatonic blues scale.. i just can't seem to play outside my scale its so annoying!

  • @attu89 try "matt churchill" he does a good lesson on how to apply dorian to blues pentatonic!! helped me loads!

  • @mifski thanks! :)

  • What a great sound!

  • Are those burstbucker pups? That hint of overdrive saturation is just sick.. 58' goldtop reissue?? Sweeeeeeet...

  • he looks like bob geldof

  • lol the guy in the blue shirt in the back nodding his head in disappointment .." Doesn't sound that good when I do it."

  • 4 people dislike this.

  • My God does this man really rip those notes out of his guitar! Absolutely fantastic. The style in this particular piece reminds me of John Scofield's playing. Does anyone out there agree? Very smooth outpouring of notes.

  • twang and i stand by my comment

  • Awesome for me...

Wanna practice some like this. Where can I get the backing track...

    It hooks me.

  • i dont think His himble, met him in boston and he woun'nt take my cd.rude and he chokes his trang.

  • @bboped - WTF are you talking about? And why should he want your CD? He aint an A & R dude - WTF is "chokes his trang?" Learn to speak properly... and maybe he will take you more seriously...

  • Is that a fender amp? if so which one? Gibson and fender amp gives such an awesome tone.

  • @stratocaster539 actually his fingers make awesome tone...thats what it really is your hearing

  • hey men ur guitar its so old !! dont you know that u can sell it to the gibson for 60k wow men ur rich ...lol

  • Wow!!!!!!!

So smooth and so fine feeling!

    I like it!

Oh yeah, Robben is a great guitar player!

  • I think Robben's head is always filled with bluesy things. He is a great guitar player, but is humble.

  • 1:42 is snowing?

  • Robben back with the YellowJackets on their next album, early 2011.

  • so smooth

  • He's one of the tastiest players alive. Love that Goldtop too.

  • Robben is a hell of a guy. Met him once in Redondo Beach, Lawndale, actually, when he used to take his amps and guitars to Jim Foote(Music Works), Jim was also his guitar tech. Was taking my beat up silverface Twin Reverb in to Jim, was blowing fuses. Got his autograph and a polaroid with him. That was '90. Good times. Saw him at the Strand and at the Palomino.

  • That is Larry Carlton's Les Paul. Seems he 'loaned' it to Robben, but just never seems to find its way home. :) We could all use friends like that.

  • @GoldtopSam Absolutely, we also could use tone like that ;)

  • Just sublime. He has something nobody can teach.

  • he's beating that guitar to death

  • 1:54 "so what"

  • @Nawa910 haha yesss!!!!! it is

  • This song is Oasis right? Man, I wish I could play like Robben... He has a great balance of blues-jazz-rock and in between, i mean, the tone, the breathing, cool bendings, he can sing! OMG

I'm just glad his teeth suck... Sorry, you can't have it all. lol

  • I Think at 2:46 everyone said (in his mind) "I should Change for another option..maybe economie or management"

  • MIles said once that Robben was his favorite guitarist that he played with..........and the gold top I think is Larry Carlton's guitar on that Robben kinda of "borrowed for a long time...."".......hehe

he got a Japanense builder to make a custom LP copy that gives him the sound of this baby knowadays..........

  • Fried neckbones and chitlin Juice . Nice!

  • what model of gold top is that?

  • @rafapak Im not sure but I think its a 1957 VOS

  • @bdraagen

    thanks!

  • Excellent!!!

    Grandma mary

  • impossible no to love this!!! thanks much for sharing!!

    thanks so much dear gus!!

  • I have a '58 goldtop just like that one....insert "smile" emoticon here

  • i had no idea he played for miles davis... thats crazy... that would explain his jazz knowledge

  • @topperspoppers No, his jazz knowledge explains why he got to play for Miles. :)

  • that's one hell of an aged goldtop, looks good ... only see all these clean and polished ones these days...

  • Great Guitarist, and also the Guitar itself.

  • perfect

  • go see him live one of a kind

  • @tmattnv There are a lot of good clones actually. Sometimes even more exciting ;) [see Scott Lerner, Garth Webber, ...]

  • LOL! the fat guy in yellow's guitar dreams are over :D Sweatin' and itchin': Did I pay money for ending my dreams???

  • I love the look of naturally worn guitar! Man, those tones are sattled down well by playin over and over through years...

  • 2:46...i love the looks on the students faces....

  • @nightsternate they all have that deer in the headlights look... i used to have it.. studied w/ robben at GIT in 92-93...great teacher.. great player, and even a more awesome person.. great guy !

  • PAF Goldtops kick bootay.

  • @impala327

    So to Dumble OD specials!!

  • such touch and feel...he's got soul just oozing from his playing.

  • Wow !
