  • I've heard of people doing these crazy things but, this is the first time I've seen some one be stupid enough to do it. This is the fastest way to screwing up your back that I have seen. If you want to use the ball to train your core stop trying to do stupid curls while doing it.

  • His form was crap on most reps because he was trying not to break his face. He risked injury the entire time, and then disrespected the gym's equipment at the end when he threw the dumbbells. I'm going to look at this as a what NOT to do guide.

  • I would have kicked you out of my gym if you threw weights around like that. Don't you have any respect for other people's property? Don't you know how much money it takes to replace broken gym equipment because idiots come in there and abuse the equipment like it is their own little playground?

  • Working on an unbalanced surface makes the exercise less effective because you have to reduce the weight. You would get better results by training on a stable surface with heavier weight and work your core harder. There is a study that has shown that doing exercises on an unstable surface does not work your core harder.

  • It doesn't work balance, and it doesn't work other muscles. This is the definition of isolation, I'm pretty sure he is doing this exercise to keep his body from moving, if he moves he will fall. He is using nothing but his biceps.

  • @K20ej88 you are actually wrong. this is functional training. you are working on your back stabilizers (erector spinae group) keeping your back straight, your rectus abdominus/oblique group stabilizing your core to stay balanced, as well as working your biceps brachii by doing the curls. yes it makes you look stupid, but it works. you try balancing on the bal. JUST BALANCING and tell me its not hard.

  • @fastcarsmoneyhoes actually an exercise like this would be very beneficiall to contact sports (assuming that this guy takes part in contact sports). this exercise works alot on core strength and stability aswell as the bicep strength you get from the curls, both of which can make you stonger in a tackle in a sport like rugby or american football...im gunna go ahead and like your comment though because it made me laugh :)

    I use exercise balls in almost all of my training as it helps strengthen core muscles that are hard to impact.

    In fact, I do my squats STANDING on the exercise balls so I'd hate to see what you guys would say if I posted a video of that!

  • Well i guess we just have to agree to disagree. Balance and coordination is extremely important. Its the core being targeted here. I could easily just stand in front of a mirror and pump curl after curl of heavier dumbbells. But really whats the point.

    I dont think the average athlete would even be able to perform this although he makes it look way harder then it actually is. He shouldnt need help rolling onto the ball either. I could go on and on about this. but there is a character limit.

  • yes balance and coordination are extremely important but this is a very stupid exercise, its putting alot of pressure on back intersections and not focusing on any one part of the body but rather putting them all under stress that inhibits overall performance. balance should be trained seperately, thats not even that hard a balance exercise. its like a tight rope walker, the weights make his centre of gravity lower and easier to balance.

  • this exercise, bicep curls, is not as conductive to sports as lets say pull ups of rowing motions that use more muscles in unison to create bar movement, and it's true that most sports trainees will benefit more from training on a stable surface, you get enough stabilization strength without the use of gimmicks such as Swiss balls

  • This work out is amazing - I do this every time i do curls and it taxes your abs. I would say this hits the abs in a different way that squats does. Im sure by now he can just roll onto the ball - find his balance and do the curls. Try adding a shoulder press to it... The curls get easy after a while.

    Doing squats on those things is the real test. Ill see if i can post a video of it later this week. Need to find a camera with video capability.

  • this works the ab/core/trunk and inner thighs more than arms... very unneccesary use of a ball and pair of dumbells... if u want big arms you must train them with a variety of moves to focus on the short and long head of the biceps and the biceps brachii, and always switch up the exericises, exercise order, resistance used, rep ranges, and rest periods... supersets of bi's and tri's also work for a great pump... leave this shit on the internet

  • It actually helps strengthen your core which is a necessity in every athletic sport. It's about controlling your body as well as the weights. There's a difference between curling a shit ton of weight and rocking and flailing everywhere rather than using less weight and being able not only to curl it up, but be able to control it on the way down.
