As a lad I was on the top deck of a double decker just going into Wigan. Someone said "Hey there's Billy". Everyone on the top deck rushed to the windows, its a wonder it didn't capsize. A truly great player.
I saw the great man play a number of times in the sixties. He retired in 68 I think when Tom Van Vollenhoven retired from the Saints team. A huge loss to league when Billy retired.
by all accounts he was just a phenomenon and the statistics alone prove it. What a delightful bloke though. typical of the people from cardiff bay (formerly known as Tiger bay-shirley bassey country)
Yes I believe he scored 571 tries and scored a total of 1,727 points, playing at winger, centre, stand off and full back to great effect a true Legend.
Yes, he told us the full story in the interview, lots of teams were chasing his signature at the time. It is quite funny how he eventually came to sign for Wigan.
Obviously didn't see him live but if you watch highlights of him you just realise what a great player he was.
