  • iOS 5 solved a few problems.

  • Hey Kevin I was just there at that air port. Went to Baja for vacation and that was one of my stops. But just wanted to no what kinda of camera u guys are using? Plz let me no thx.

  • what camera ru useing plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz cuzzzzzzzzzz i wana buy full HD camera like the 1 u have thanxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • how bout u suck

  • Disagree with most of those. I think apple needs like integrated facebook contacts, like android, you can text people if their number is on facebook. They also need to add moving backgrounds,

  • great suggestions

  • More than 5 dude

  • You have some good ideas.

Imagine if the next iPhone had a feature that allowed wireless synching instead of physically plugging it into your dock.

How about an external HDMI port so you can output your videos onto a large screen TV.

How about two cameras to create 3D video like Nintendo is working on.

But above all, I agree with Verizon (as well as T-Mobile) having their very own iPhone.

Oh and do away with the data plan. Just one flat fee. They are making tons of money as it is.

  • @TechTalkGuy

Wireless sync - Can do it on my droid X

HDMI port - Droid X has it

Very fast internet - Verizon has it

And verizon still has unlimited web plans.

  • @1337modz -- How do the rates compare with AT&T ??

  • @TechTalkGuy According to PCWorld:

Our conclusion: With the cheapest option, Droid X costs about $360 more over two years than the 16GB iPhone 4 does, but the Droid X plan includes unlimited data compared with 200MB for the iPhone 4

With the high-end plan options for both smartphones, the Droid X costs $120 more over two years. The Droid X plan includes unlimited data, while the iPhone 4's data is capped at 2GB per month (though, to be fair, few users will exceed the 2GB limit)

    Winner: Droid X

  • @TechTalkGuy And the whole thing about not using more than 2GB of data, Complete BS in my opinion. I used over 2 gig in the first week

  • Agreed. And so did Apple.... or at least a little bit? Apple will never compromise completely and give people what they should have had in the beginning. Have fun selling millions more units Android manufacturers!

  • no radio no multitasking no real time mail sync bigger storage no flash support no video calls over 3g

  • Here are my thoughts.....

1 high quality camera with zoom

    2 better YouTube app

    3 HD compatible

4 like a theme store without being jailbroken

    5 tmobile and verizon!

    Thanks rated 5 stars

  • what was this tape with a dslr ?

  • I highly doubt Apple will allow developers to host apps on a third party website. They love the concept of their app store WAAY too much.

Multitasking will be in OS 4.0

  • Apple sucks too...

  • Verizon ftw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I agree with them all ... great video Kevin!

  • Jailbreak!!!

I backround pandora all the time. :)

  • hosting third party apps on their own website is impossible, think of how many information-sealing viruses you can get

  • I have the solution: JAILBREAK

  • haha, yeah right, apple will never let you install apps from a source outside of the app store, like a blackberry does, theyd lose too much money.

  • You forgot to mention Flash support...

  • I'm glad flash isn't on the iphone. The sooner flash dies the better.

  • @itsonlydesign but it wont die, it will come in various forms

  • question for glenn!! what lens is he using, its quite nice!

  • If you don't need itunes for apps, the phone will be more prone to crash. Thus the phone would "suck" more, and apple does not want that.

Multitasking will lower battery life. As all iphone owners know, the battery life sucks already. Why make it worst?

Letting people make replacements for the default apps is kind of like saying that apple's applications are not good enough. And apple would not admit that they have an inferior product.

Other than that, I think everything else is reasonable.

  • If blackberrys and other devices didnt do multitasking i could understand the theory on battery life, but they do it fine, you can go a whole day or two without needing a charge depending on what youre doing.

The main reason why apple wont allow apps outside of the app store is because they get a cut of the money from the apps sold, thats it, also opening it up to third party sites would make it very difficult to fight piracy of apps.

on your last point, i think users should be given a choice.

  • This was horrible.

I thought this was a list for consumers.

Most of it was for developers.

  • it should go like this:

    1) 5megapixel camera or more that takes good photos so that i don't need to carry another thing in my pocket. And no to the idiots who disagree with me and say "I gotta camera for that" bullshit you also got a phone to call why use iphone to call then.

    2)2X Longer battery life

3)multitasking(although u can jailbreak and do that)

    4)OLED

5)lower restriction on app approval process.

  • double the battery life? while also getting multitasking? good luck with that.

  • Conserned about the app quality? LOL Iphone? Quality? I have one so I am free to say how shitty the Iphone is.

  • VERIZON PLEASE! it is the only thing preventing me from getting the iPhone. And i agree with multitasking too :) :) :)

  • Nice camera quality

  • I watched this is HD and all I got to say is "Wow"

  • I am agree that Apple shoud do Kevin top 5, but not the 5 one, why another carrier, Apple should sell the iPhone unlocked... for 150 or 200 $ more..

  • Well if Apple sold an unlocked version of the Iphone for more money I don't know why anyone would but it because you could still only use it on T-mobile and such. You cant use the Iphone on Verizon because of CDMA vs EVDO restrictions on the network and phones. I do still agree that all phones should just be unlocked but unfortunately as of right now its not an option

  • Love the 5D video!! I want to run multiple apps at the same time, and believe it or not.....Flash Video support please, or hurry up with HTML5 @YouTube

  • how do you know this was shot with a 5D?

  • He said so.

  • The actual video is beautiful. My father got a 5D mkii a couple of months ago and the quality is incredible.

  • the thing about all the points you made andriod is already doing ALL of these right now, they need something beyond what android offers

they definitely need multi tasking.. my friend hates the fact that on my nexus i can be on pandora and shoot a text.

hell you can be on pandora, plus play music from the stock app(so yes 2 songs playing at once) and shoot a text/browse web

  • I would stick to the rule of 3: so 3 app-multitasking.

  • kevin what camera did you use to shoot this vid?

  • Hey Kevin! Huge fan of you and Digg/nation.

I noticed that in every time when you talk about what iPhone needs to do better, you always mention AT&T.

Alright, I completely understand where you are coming from and I agree 100% that their network sucks.

HOWEVERif they were to move to a "better" network (Sprint, Verizon)you would not have the same experience. You want to listen to Pandora AND surf the webon Verizon and Sprint you can't. Their networks are PHYSICALLY unable to do that (CDMA).

  • kevin rose life is so good its almost pornographic to follow it.

  • i think you mean orgasmic? i might be wrong :D

  • Where I am AT&T is a lot better than Verizon!

  • dude this camera there using is so nice

  • Also I have to say, amazing video quality! Very well done.

  • @thecreativeone Just thinking the same thing! haha. I wasn't even watching it in HD.

  • I agree with pretty much everything you said. Good list! I still have to try out the Nexus One.

  • nice fish eye effect

  • Im an Apple/iPhone guy but... RIM Blackberry has been doing many of these things for years (Apps everywhere, browser choices, competitive apps, amazing multi-tasking, many networks, etc.).

  • just a thought... agree w/ most everything he stated.. .. but doesnt it show his Apple fanboy status by directing his monologue at Apple... Couldnt he have said "Smart phone makers, here is my recipe for your product:"

Keep the vids coming Kevin... U have insider insight which is appreciated

  • the title reads "Top 5 changes the iPhone needs to stay dominant"... iPhone, not "Smart phone"s

  • Sorry Kevin, I kind of have to disagree.

  • the only thing that makes the iphone dominant is the fact that it is already number one and there are a lot off apps for it. Android is increasing the amount of apps quick and finally that dreded communist phone will die

  • Kevin Rose is a jiggity G

  • I'd be willing to bet this was shot with either a 7D or 5DMarkII. It does look great. And I echo Kevin's statement, AT+T blows. So bad.

  • One of those things has already arrived.

As of now, apps are usually approved in 24 hours.

  • what did you shoot this with?

  • Apple will never allow apps to install outside of the app store. It's not their style.

  • Lovin the videos Kevin!

  • no verizon sucks! way to expensive!!

  • Verizon isn't much more expensive than AT&T, they are the top two most expensive carriers. If you want to save money then go to sprint or tmobile. I honestly think sprint is the best, they have the cheapest service, the second most amount of coverage, and their 3g is faster than verizon's.

  • 1+2: Apple will never give up the App Store. They make too much money. An expedited process would be way more likely, perhaps for updates.

3: Competitive apps are a great idea. Give me the chance to choose Safari over other browsers, just like I did on my computer.

4: I'm very concerned about battery life, but if it passes I think there should be a maximum limit.

5: I feel bad for you guys in the states. Rogers is fantastic in Ottawa. And we now have other choices..

  • Why are you flying commercially? I thought you were rollin' in it... netjets my friend.

  • i like the last one best! (verizon)

  • What camera and lense was this shot with?

  • Nice res. guys, the video looks so crisp :D

  • 4 out of 5 ain't bad, 3rd party hosting highly unlikely

  • Oh, I guess it goes along with the expedited app store. (5) Use third-party sites.

  • Wait...did I miss one? I counted four. (1) Expedited app process, (2) competitive apps like Firefox, (3) multi-tasking, and (4) switch to Verizon. What was 5?

  • @Sorcerer8605 allow third party download for apps was 2 but kind of merged it with 1

  • I'm sorry but I have to say this, your list sucks.

  • agreed sure multitasking is nice and verizon is essential but the other 3 are not vital

  • Kevin rose is so hot

  • What camera was that???

  • I'm guessing it's shot with the Canon 5DMKII

  • @imaginaryme33 Likely the 5DmkII as both Kevin and Glenn have one.

  • Cool!

  • nexu swan

  • the app hosting on 3rd party website is really unsafe this could create loop hole into virus and malware onto iphone

  • Apple would never allow applications to install from third party websites. Lol, you realize its a closed platform right? Highly doubtful Apple would ever change that. Why should they? Look how incredibly successful its whole closed ecosystem has become. Apple wouldn't benefit much by opening the platform (from a market standpoint), because they don't need to and won't take that risk at the expense of their control over user experience.

  • However Apple SHOULD allow any apps to be allowed INTO their ecosystem, instead of not allowing apps that alter Apples "set" user experience.

Just gonna have to jailbreak until then, which will probably happen never :P

  • Right on all points, but most of those will never happen.

  • im not an iphone developer (i've tried that) but i can totally get onboard with those ideas as a user as to better customise my iphone experience i've had to jail break my iphone (as have many other users) and with that not being the most user friendly process it kind of hinders the concept of the iphones fluid nature, which is a reason so many people enjoy the iphone. btw after seeing this im going to invest in a wide angle lens :p

  • Comment removed

  • Agreed on all account! As an aside, what camera is this shot on? Is it me or is the quality fan-freakin-tastic?!?!

  • @TheEminentGeek it looks like a dSLR, especially from the DoF behind Kevin and the wide angle he gets when he zooms out.

  • Same question here.

  • Apple are way too controlling for me. i hope they fail. i'm rooting for google.

  • Or sprint.

  • I say scrap the approval system, or atleast give trusted developers a status and a free pass.

  • rad video Kevin

  • Apple doesn't want to change if it means they loose some previously held control.

  • Good stuff i agree

  • I don't think Apple like competition. As much as FireFox would be awesome on the iPhone, I doubt it'll happen.

    Great tips though.

  • one thing that sucks is that here in portugal the cheapest iphone you can get is for 500 euros...and the mosy expensive one 700 euros so pretty expensive
