What made this play SO HUGE was the weeks leading up to it. The M's started August 13 games in the basement. Slowly they started to put together wins, often winning games in extra innings and down in the count (Remember "refuse to lose"?). It seemed everyone on the team made a contribution, not just the marquee players. They'd beat the Angels in a one game play off, to face the Yankees.. 5 games, this was the last inning of the last game. To say the city was electrified would be an undestatement
holy shit...i was looking for thedouble video and lo and behold i find aaron rocking some reflection, among some other folks i recognize...but its the truth, greatest hit ever...gives me goosebumps every time i hear dave's commentary
Great job. i voted for the stadium (Safeco) which failed, but that season inspired the city officials to make it happen anyway. P.S. Joey Cora layed down the bunt that started things off.
I love the Mariners. This play made me a fan. Until then, I had never been to Washington.
A beautiful lady was at that game on the third base side. I would not meet her until a year later, and we're still together. We have been back to see games in Safeco many, many times.
It sucks that the Mariners have fallen so far, but we still love them. With baseball, it's not always about championships. Sometimes it's just about enjoying the game on a lazy afternoon.
Haha do you go to UW? Or are you one of the 53405746350763 people who live in King County and pledge your hearts to purple... Dude I'm not bombing you. The entire state of Washington lives in the past. What have you done for me lately in sports... NOTHING!!! If WSU sucks dick I won't wanna know the dirty dirty things that go on when grown men wear Purple.
haha I go to Northwestern actually, but I grew up in Seattle. Unfortunately at Northwestern the athletes still wear purple, but our football team was 9-4 this year.
The sad thing is this is the best memory in Mariners history... You didn't even make it to the World Series... You win 116 games in a season and it amounts for nada.... That is rough.
@packanie I know this is a year old, but I just found this vid...and this comment to a comment. Just to further packanie's sentiment regarding the Cougars...what's their record regarding the Apple Cup (aka "The most important football game in the great state of Washington")? Oh yeah... 31-65-6. Wow! GREAT football team ya'll got there! :D Go Huskies!
I don't know too many people who actually remember the Sonics' championship win, and that franchise is actually gone now. This was basically the greatest moment in the history of Seattle sports.
musberger had a good call....but it was nothing....NOTHING compared to niehaus....as someone who is now in the sports broadcast field....dave and rick are the guys who got me into it...and that call is far and away my favorite of any. i must have watched that part of my oh my 300 times. had the pleasure of meeting those guys too...they are class acts through and through
Growing up listening to Dave and Rick made me want to be a baseball broadcaster too. Glad to see there are others out there who were inspired by them as well.
it would be really cool if you could just post the footage of the double instead of you guys talking. no offense, but i want to see the whole thing throug
yeah i was at that game i was 9 years old. that was possibly one of the greatest sports events ive ever seen in my life. i was also lucky enuff to see the game where ichiro threw out terrence long tryin to get a triple. ichiro gunned him out by 3 feet. I was also able to see kaz sasaki play his first game and get his first save. no matter how bad the mariners are i still love watching baseball at the safe.
i attended all three of those games. i was in third grade, and remember every minute of it vividly. i see this video, hear the ecstatic screams of dave niehaus, and get shivers throughout my body. sometimes, considering that the mariners have not had a similar post-season experience since 2000, i shed a few tears...
I grew up a Mariners fan in Bremerton. As a kid, I rooted for the likes of Mark Langston, Alvin Davis and Ken Phelps. Years of mediocrity paid off in 1995. This is the greatest moment I have experienced as a sports fan. Edgar, Joey, Junior...
I'm a lifelong Yankee fan, but that game and series was one of the greatest of all time. I was fortunate to be at Gm 1 when JR. hit TWO home runs in the game, in GM 5, he scored from FIRST BASE after McDowell gave up that Double to Edgar...too bad however, you don't have Musburger's call here, THAT one was for the ages, "Line Drive, we are Tied! Griffey, is coming around, in the corners Bernie, he's gonna try to score, here's the division championship, Mariners win it! Mariners win it!"
For M's fans, the Niehaus call will forever be the definitive broadcast of "The Double." I have actually not heard the Musberger call believe it or not. He's a great announcer as well. His call of the 2000 Northwestern-Michigan football game is an instant classic.
Great video. I remember "the double" like it was yesterday. It happened on October 8, 1995, which was my 18th Birthday. I still sometimes reflect back on that year.
I just happen to know almost everyone in this video personally, and lets just leave it at that.
All I got to say is, they made it pretty dramatic... And really, my comment wasn't anything negative about the video, its more that I am just giving these guys some shit ;)
wait..... if they lost the alcs they would have relocated? thats terrible. and if they made the alcs why would they want to move if their team was good. im confused somebody fill me in
Basically 1995 was the year everyone was discussing whether or not the Mariners should get a new stadium. The owners were saying they were going to move the team if a new stadium wasn't approved. The double was the culmination of an incredible season that saved baseball in Seattle and led to Safeco Field, the M's amazing ballpark.
And in the game before that, Edgar had 2 HRs (one a grand slam) and 7 RBI in helping the Mariners come back from a 5-0 deficit to force game 5 with an 11-8 win.
I remember that game very well, as soon as he hit it everyone in the Kingdome was standing and I couldn't see anything. Just that the left fielder's arm was weaker than Manny Ramirez which mean's it was really weak since he is the worst left fielder in baseball. Not that it would have made difference since Junior was flying around those bases faster then I have seen him
