He can play above the fretboard because he's playing bottleneck/slide, he doesn't have to fret, he just touches the strings with the slide he's wearing on third or 4th finger left hand.
And amazing sound too. It's said that lots of top-rank guitarists go to his shows, and EVERY second-rank guitarist, to try to learn how he does it. Put me in there somewhere.
This song will always be relevent. The poor will always struggle against the same things in life. Life is hard, and then you die. The only comfort is the rich will also die. No pockets in a shroud. Hope that cheered you all up.
I've learned SO MUCH from this man. He is truly one of my greatest guitar heros of all time. I learned to play slide(bottle neck) by listening to "Into The Purple Valley" Been a fan for a long, long time now. Damn just listen to how soulful he is... HOLEY JOJO.
@wc4dblues The '60s Fender Stratocaster is his main bottleneck guitar. It has an Oahu lap-steel pickup assembly - the body was routed out to accomodate that - and is notched for the Fender tailpiece. It also has a Teisco pickup in the necj position. The neck is a "C" model he got from David Lindley. It's really wide with lots of mass. It's a very stable and responsive guitar, with good sustain and a good constant volume. Info from rycooder.nl
@wc4dblues What makes the Oahu pickup different than others is that the magnetic field surrounds the strings. The strings actually run through the pickup. That produces the incredible harmonics that Ry is known for. I have looked for years and have two of them. One from the mid 50s and one from the late 40s. Nothing else sounds like them.
ry's ride is taken on the PAF in the neck spot - he switches to the Valco pup when he gets into the stratosphere towards end of solo ... the Valco pups do sound incredible as do the old Rickenbacher horse-shoes. it's cliche i know, but ry's tone really is in his hands and heart ...

God is not poor and doesn't want his people to be poor, but we have to do it his way. "But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for [it is] he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as [it is] this day." However difficult it is for you to accept, the word of God clearly says, "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth." You can twist it however you like. Another one: "For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich." To prosper or become rich covers the gamut. Like everything else, it cost money to spread the word.

Mr Ry Cooder is as infamous as Bob Dillon and stevie ray vaughan.

I'm from Australia and my name is Ry because every hard time my Dad had he listened to Ry Cooder, My Mum can call me Ryan but I am proud to have RY on my birth certificate just remember Ry Cooder didn't just touch people in the States!
Except that it's not on the purple valley album. Incidentally there's a much better version he did on the OGWT in 1982. Includes Little Sister from the BTYD album from 1980.
This is the soundtrack of my life from the 1970's to forever. Been drunk, lost, in and out of love, sleepin' in the backseat of my 55 buick, on the side of the road in the middle of the night, in the tank, and curled up inside my head, and this music has been a constant. If Ry had a thousand albums out, it still would never be enough. Screw golf and Disneyland, this, THIS, is heaven! Amen.
@mrmisterjefferson This is heaven indeed - saw Ry and this band at the Hammersmith Odeon London in 1980 and became a life long fan. Actually was introduced to Boomer's Story in 1977 and want to have Maria Helena played at my funeral - shame I won't be there to enjoy it though! Bliss.

@mrmisterjefferson RC is my favorite modern musician. I just listened to Poor Man Whistle Test 1981 & still have chills. I'll always be a Disney freak. My daughter tells me, I'll be an 81 year old in wheelchair, no family, waiting in line to see Mickey. She's right. I remember we only got 2 channels & our tv didn't get Walt's show. I got spanked every night for sneaking to a neighbors who could get Walt's show. It was worth it. Forget the golf & Ry's music is the best. Mickey still rocks!
@mrmisterjefferson i love how you fucking americans love to show off the HARD AND SUFFERED life that you had, and think you are cool, if you have been drunk lost sleeping in your car in usa, it's not cuz ur cool, it's because ur a fucking bum....

Originally done by Blind Alfred Reed in 1929. I guess Ry Cooder is the greatest conservator of authentic (American) music. Great to see here Flaco as well.
"12 Angry Men"....yes it's as mysterious as anti-matter...a thumbs down????? Leave the arts alone! If you don't like it move on...but to attack it and proclaim it's unworthy? Well I don't mean to be didactic (See Dictionary)but think for a minute.......this only speaks of you ie. "I don't like this" Your not alone my child...there're many people who don't like this music.....but they realize if you love one you must respect all. Your forgiven now ...my little tone deft weasel!!!!
Ry Cooder and his band of BRILLIANTS were never publicized much, but these genius players, Keltner, Flaco, Parks & All Singers are all maestros in their own rights....if you aren't familiar with each and every one of them, you've been livin small for too long...look 'em up and you'll know what LOVE is. They came thru just once in my lifetime unfortunately, but thanks to this video and Ry's CDs we can enjoy endlessly. What a band of talents!!
Gimme more Flaco Jiminez. There ain't a greater squeeze box player on earth. The version of this tune by the Del Lords is the one though. It is an entirely different take on the song. But, Ry does a good job too. I gave it a thumbs up. Springsteen also has a version. Although I am not sure either is on youtube.
the rest of the band forgot what they were oan aboot. he will play past the bridge,,,wit a man ! wi good political ideas. he is the best. him and albert lee.i could go on
besides the ummmm obvious ... Keltner's feel is really off the charts. what he does with second half of Cooder's ride is sublime - don't know if he's just wayy back in the pocket or actually slowing down but damn ...
ry cooder is amountain climber. see how he surmounted that last bridge. the rest of the band forgot what they where on about. the sax player. he will never. haud on. i dont believe it. he did as if he wouldnt. rys a big man and he sings for all of us. sing out
Oh man. I mean, really. Oh man. Is there anyone with more soul and talent than Ry Cooder? I think not. And to think, if he'd accepted the Stones' offer to join, we'd have lost this. Thank you Ry.
This song has a lot of sentimental-heart-tugging feeling to it------a real tear-jerker type mode going on in this song---ha!!! But dang if there's not a lot of ligit words and meanings to it--------GO RY!!!!!!!
perfect

Ry Cooder and his band of BRILLIANTS were never publicized much, but these genius players, Keltner, Flaco, Parks & All Singers are all maestros in their own rights....if you aren't familiar with each and every one of them, you've been livin small for too long...look 'em up and you'll know what LOVE is. They came thru just once in my lifetime unfortunately, but thanks to this video and Ry's CDs we can enjoy endlessly. What a band of talents!!

@redibeaver well said, these guys just love what they are doing and fortunately for us we can enjoy too. Proper musicians and artists.

Funny, I was waiting for him to tune that G string. Open G really uncranks the neck sometimes on a strat.

Sometimes he's just OK, sometimes he's excellent.
He does a fine job here, but I've heard him play better.
When he's at the top of his game, Ry is fabulous !

When LOVE justdoes not happen.
When Money just does not comes...
The PURE ESSENTIAL RISES!
The man.
His Hopes.
HIS personal never-ending battle!
And those "on-the-better-side" and their idiot laughs and utter useless better-knowing is a pure human and personal mistake.

besides the ummmm obvious ... Keltner's feel is really off the charts. what he does with second half of Cooder's ride is sublime - don't know if he's just wayy back in the pocket or actually slowing down but damn ...

The masters guitar is out of tune. It kind of ads to the feel of the song. Like life being out of tune.

Oh man. I mean, really. Oh man. Is there anyone with more soul and talent than Ry Cooder? I think not. And to think, if he'd accepted the Stones' offer to join, we'd have lost this. Thank you Ry.
