I was living in New Jersey, 7 years old, and HORRIFIED by this. I remember thinking that this was the scariest thing I had ever seen...Players beating up fans!
I was at this famous game where the bruins jumped into the stands after the game. i was 21 yrs old and was all of 40 feet from the fight but everyone was standing so i wasnt able to see much of what really happened.
Some fans thinking their tough with the glass in the way... LOL - how tough were they after the Bruins stormed the stands? Ranger fans scattering like frightened cockroaches like they are.
No, Terry o' Reilly got suspended for 8 games, the fans deserved the beatdown. Who in there right mind would take a hockey stick out of a professional hockey players hands and start hitting him with it and not expect to get a beating? Consider them lucky milbury did not rip off his skate and try to stab somebody happy gilmore style, fuck the rangers and GO BRUINS!!!!!!
The Bruin players then proceded onto the streets, burning and pillaging local shops and stores, raping the women ensuring another generation of Black and Gold hooligans !!

as 47 year old New England sports fan..... this is one of my favorite moments in History.... Milbury beating a guy with his own shoe....... O'Reilly was probably my fav. Bruin of all-time
2:30 It seems Esposito came back out of the dressing room. This had to be weird for Phil to watch take place, having been a Bruin from 1965-1976 and having played with many of the Bruins now in the stands brawling with Rangers fans.
I have to show this to the guys at work on Monday. More than half of them weren't even a gleam in their daddys eye when this happened. A friend talks about Esposito all the time, yet a couple of the kids don't have a clue what he's talking about. Makes me wanna cry. Thanks for posting. I wish my dad could see this. He'd say, oh yah! I remember that.
@dj6927 thanks dj...was just thinking i wish i could show this to my dad too....remember watching it with him when it happened..i was about 14 and thought it was awesome....he was talking about it for weeks..... damn, I miss him.
Priceless! Man, I was only 13. I love when Oreilly goes over the glass & Mcnabb takes the guy down. The cop pauses for a second thinking, do I get into this,
while Milbury rips the guys shoe off. You could write a book with the sayings
1) you gotta worry about a spectator
2) just a wild scene at MSG
3) and now the fans, I hope they're fighting amongst themselves
4) players could get hurt, fans of course too
5) finally, peace is restored (with cops all over)
@dudefromutopia if your neandrathals wanna beat up fans thats your hangup. i wouldnt go into any stands if i was a player, opposing team or home team. thats just stupid.
@gogicccccc nobody wants to go to the balkans because its full of retard fuckheads like you, the world would be a better place if we walled off that entire area and let you guys all kill and rape each other
Hockey just aint what it used to be. I'm not saying players should go into the stands, but the teams just don't hate each other the way they used to. All we have now is the designated "enforcers" having their scraps, usually with a nice pat on the back for each other when in the past they hated each others fucking guts! There just aint enough hate in the game anymore...still a good game, but there aren't any "wars" anymore.
while i'm a life-long habs fan and nyc resident,i do believe that o'reily's actions were completely understandable. a spectator who "crosses the line" at a game, is a candidate for an ass-kicking. thanks for posting this treat!
@rocknrollphilip I agree. I have seen another clip on TV (I think it was an ESPN thing) where the fan is seen hitting a Bruin before they charge the stands. In that case, I don't blame them for tuning the fool up.
Being a fan and passionate about your team, does NOT give you license to attack a player, and you deserve what you get, just like if you did that to someone on the street. Fair play to the Bruins on this one!
I was at this game. I was ten years old and actually watched this from directly across the ice in what they used to call the "loge" at MSG. The images will stay with me when I am old and senile :)
I remember watching this game live on WSBKTV 38 in Boston when I was in highschool. It sure helped feed my loathing for New York City fans. I've seen video of this incident a bunch of times, and I had know idea that a young Raymond Bourque was on the team during this infamous incident. Welcome to the NHL Ray!!
Aboslutely not, I remember back in the day, if someone came in with an opponents jerseys, it would wind up on the ice....with some nose juice on it....Ohhh the good old days....when Boston meant something
"u think if this happened in boston the bruins would just watch?"
Had it happened in Bostion, the fans would have done the butt-kicking - or at least fought to a draw. Those were the days, all right -- but I can't say I'm entirely sorry they're gone!
"The fans are standing up to them! The security guards are standing up to them! The peanut vendors are standing up to them! And by golly, if I could get down there, Id be standing up to them!"
John Kaptain, a Ranger fan, reached over the glass and hit Stan Jonathan, cutting him under the eye. Jonathan put up his stick to protect himself, and Kaptain grabbed the stick. That was a bit much for OReilly, who scaled the glass and proceeded to deliver a lesson in proper hockey etiquette. O'Reilly got taken down as fans piled on, allowing Kaptain to escape, but McNab and Milbury ran him down and finished the job. Milbury tossed Kaptain's shoe onto the ice, and he walked home without it.
In case your interested, my step dad beat O'Reilly up in 1981; for not giving back his seat to him and for hitting on his date. He said O'Reilly was one of the toughest guys he'd ever fought.
lol, he used to beat my ass too. He used to knock the shit out of me for anything I did wrong...But he was fair. He asked me the other day, "do you whine to people about the ass kickings I gave you? and just laugh at me. "That's why your not a pussy," he said. When he turns 80 I'm gonna get him lol. Take care bro!
Your stepdad beat up Terry Oreilly? Sure he did. And i walked on the moon. Oreilly was one of the toughest players in NHL history. He played for one reason. Cause he was a goon that could fight.
He didn't only fight - the guy could play. Look at his stats. Now Tiger Williams and Dave Schultz - THOSE guys only played for one reason. There's a reason Williams holds the NHL career record for PIM's and Dave Schultz held the single season PIM record for years.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this happened when the NHL was a truly shitty league. MSG was even more disgusting back then. 3 out of 4 of the teams were crap! the habs had no problem winning 4 cups in a row and 6 in the decade. bobby orr looked amazing running circles around old bald headed and grey haired cardboard cut out defencmen. any player with todays abilities would've easily scored 100 goals a year back then.
Being tough is ok. But being disgraceful is not. The 70's-early 80's Bruins were the toughest team to lace on skates, tougher than the Flyers. No surprises here that Bruin players went into the stands to fight the crowd.
How could the movie Slapshot spoof this brawl when the movie was filmed 3 years before this happened and released 2 years before it happened? The movie was released in 1977, and this game wasn't played until December 23rd of 1979. What you have here is a case of life immitating art.
I recant my comment about the spoof but the Slapshot into the stands incident actually occurred in the minors with a couple of the Hansen boys....didn't their sister write a large portion of the screenplay?????
My favorite part of the entire video is a quote from the announcer. "And then all of a sudden, pandemonium let loose, and all the Bruins wound up in the stands."
Love those '79 Rangers! Went to the Cup Finals and nearly met Boston too, except that the B's choked against Montreal in Game 7. The '79 Finals was the last "Original Six" matchup between the Rangers and the Canadiens.
They lost game seven in Montreal in overtime...the famous "too many men on the ice" Montreal home call...didn't the Canadiens will the Cup in 1979? Weren't they one of the greastest dynasty's in sports history during the 70's??? The Bruins did not choke the Habs were mush better! Period! This is from a life long B's fan...
What I love is that when I ran the tape back and looked up the uniform numbers, I saw the Bruins had 2 LWers on the ice, so the 7th man was Stan Jonathan, one of Cherry's favorites because he was (supposedly) a great fighter. The Bruins didn't choke, they GOT BEAT. As did the Rangers, and having a healthy Ulf Nilsson wouldn't have made a difference for the "Ooh lala, Sasson" boys -- and it's "Sass-AWN," not "Sass-OON!" You'd think Canadians, knowing French, would know!
Typical boston

He said O'Reilly was one of the toughest guys he'd ever fought.
hamace 2 years ago
I believe it -- O'Reilly was an all-around pain in the ass. (I trust you didn't dare tangle with your step-dad. LOL!)
jpdemers 2 years ago
lol, he used to beat my ass too. He used to knock the shit out of me for anything I did wrong...But he was fair. He asked me the other day, "do you whine to people about the ass kickings I gave you? and just laugh at me. "That's why your not a pussy," he said. When he turns 80 I'm gonna get him lol. Take care bro!

@hamace Are you Denis Leary in disguise?! LOL

Your stepdad beat up Terry Oreilly? Sure he did. And i walked on the moon. Oreilly was one of the toughest players in NHL history. He played for one reason. Cause he was a goon that could fight.

I'm surprised it took this long for someone like yo uto chime in.
It was in November of 1981 at Ann's Patio on Revere Beach Revere Ma
I had no idea hockey players were invincible.
hamace 2 years ago
He didn't only fight - the guy could play. Look at his stats. Now Tiger Williams and Dave Schultz - THOSE guys only played for one reason. There's a reason Williams holds the NHL career record for PIM's and Dave Schultz held the single season PIM record for years.

Who cares, so your step dad was a goon without the hockey equipment? Thats a badge of honor.
You both must be very proud.
Let us know when he cures cancer.
TalkinBall 1 year ago
Its just a story, what's your problem? Can you cure cancer?
hamace 1 year ago
no I cant but Im pretty sure any goon can throw punches..

This comment has received too many negative votes show
this happened when the NHL was a truly shitty league. MSG was even more disgusting back then. 3 out of 4 of the teams were crap! the habs had no problem winning 4 cups in a row and 6 in the decade. bobby orr looked amazing running circles around old bald headed and grey haired cardboard cut out defencmen. any player with todays abilities would've easily scored 100 goals a year back then.

like any other sport?

Being tough is ok. But being disgraceful is not. The 70's-early 80's Bruins were the toughest team to lace on skates, tougher than the Flyers. No surprises here that Bruin players went into the stands to fight the crowd.

Didn't the movie Slapshot spoof this when the Hansons went into the stands???
ekimfloom 2 years ago
That was exactly what I was thinkin when they showed the long shot with the rangers just standing there.
"should we get involved?" "just a thought"
schnids1605 2 years ago
How could the movie Slapshot spoof this brawl when the movie was filmed 3 years before this happened and released 2 years before it happened? The movie was released in 1977, and this game wasn't played until December 23rd of 1979. What you have here is a case of life immitating art.
Pikeyfights85 2 years ago
I recant my comment about the spoof but the Slapshot into the stands incident actually occurred in the minors with a couple of the Hansen boys....didn't their sister write a large portion of the screenplay?????
ekimfloom 2 years ago
My favorite part of the entire video is a quote from the announcer. "And then all of a sudden, pandemonium let loose, and all the Bruins wound up in the stands."
Old time Boston hockey at its best

That was a great Bruins team.
I think the Rangers probably felt fortunate that they weren't the one's getting pummeled for a change.
shockrock72 2 years ago 5
Love those '79 Rangers! Went to the Cup Finals and nearly met Boston too, except that the B's choked against Montreal in Game 7. The '79 Finals was the last "Original Six" matchup between the Rangers and the Canadiens.
ntvnyr30 2 years ago
Bruins choked against the Cup Champs?
They lost game seven in Montreal in overtime...the famous "too many men on the ice" Montreal home call...didn't the Canadiens will the Cup in 1979? Weren't they one of the greastest dynasty's in sports history during the 70's??? The Bruins did not choke the Habs were mush better! Period! This is from a life long B's fan...
jchez1965 2 years ago 2
What I love is that when I ran the tape back and looked up the uniform numbers, I saw the Bruins had 2 LWers on the ice, so the 7th man was Stan Jonathan, one of Cherry's favorites because he was (supposedly) a great fighter. The Bruins didn't choke, they GOT BEAT. As did the Rangers, and having a healthy Ulf Nilsson wouldn't have made a difference for the "Ooh lala, Sasson" boys -- and it's "Sass-AWN," not "Sass-OON!" You'd think Canadians, knowing French, would know!
UncleMikeNJ 2 years ago
Does anyone know who the announcers are? No Marv Albert, so I'm guessing it's the Bruins' broadcast.
UncleMikeNJ 2 years ago
Bruins broadcasters John Pierson and Fred Cusik ...both are alive and well!
