Even if one does not like the occupation of Palestine by Israel, this does not change the fact that Israel is one, if not the only democracy in the middle east where you can be free. If there are more meanings to Arabic words than there are to English words then it follows that a translation from Arabic to English should be straightforward. Why hasn't it been done? The only plausible answer is that the Arabs themselves cannot agree on its meanings, so how can the English be criticized in this regard?

A single word with no equivalent (or multiple equivalents, for that matter) is a rare occurrence, and, again, the care and deliberation of dedicated researchers can in fact create a faithful translation of such words, and does so. There's no such thing as a concept that can only be communicated in one language. Cultural idioms CAN be explained in other languages.

No offense but science doesn't deal in facts. They're not interested in the guaranteed known. Science (especially neuroscience) is constantly changing and as such our definitions of things are changing. Thats the beauty of science, it doesn't deal in definites, it deals in statistical likelihoods.

Sam Harris does NOT say that "all Muslims are terrorists". His point (partly) is that the Quran contains passages that explicitly call for violence. As long as people hold the Quran as a holy book, then those passages can be used to justify all sorts of evil. Christians, Jews and Hindus do and have done the same thing. It's the liability of believing without evidence that concerns rational people such as Harris and myself.

You're right. There IS a difference between defending and offensive aggression. If you're asking me if there is such a thing as a 'just war' then I would say yes. But I'm not blaming all violence on religion, just the violence carried out explicitly in the name of religion (which is a huge share). The holy books have many nice and peaceful passages, but also many profane and violent ones. Taking the books literally carries the liability of obeying the violent ones. That's a problem.

A single word with no equivalent (or multiple equivalents, for that matter) is a rare occurrence, and, again, the care and deliberation of dedicated researchers can in fact create a faithful translation of such words, and does so. There's no such thing as a concept that can only be communicated in one language. Cultural idioms CAN be explained in other languages.

Many people in the west dislike Islam but not for the reasons you give. I certainly dislike islam and all it stands for but not because it encourages the under privileged to fight for their rights. No offense but science doesn't deal in facts. They're not interested in the guaranteed known. Science (especially neuroscience) is constantly changing and as such our definitions of things are changing. Thats the beauty of science, it doesn't deal in definites, it deals in statistical likelihoods.
If you can't use science as a source for arguments then why argue. Science concerns all things in so far as much as we can understand them. If you can't understand them then why discuss them?

Sam Harris does NOT say that "all Muslims are terrorists". His point (partly) is that the Quran contains passages that explicitly call for violence. As long as people hold the Quran as a holy book, then those passages can be used to justify all sorts of evil. Christians, Jews and Hindus do and have done the same thing. It's the liability of believing without evidence that concerns rational people such as Harris and myself.

You're right. There IS a difference between defending and offensive aggression. If you're asking me if there is such a thing as a 'just war' then I would say yes. But I'm not blaming all violence on religion, just the violence carried out explicitly in the name of religion (which is a huge share). The holy books have many nice and peaceful passages, but also many profane and violent ones. Taking the books literally carries the liability of obeying the violent ones. That's a problem.
