  • I really like this song .i grew up with it Thank u 4 posting.

  • Although Gold put personal references in "Lonely Boy" (1977) including his year of birth, he admitted in an interview that it was not autobiographical: "Maybe it was a mistake to do that but I simply put in those details because it was convenient. I hadn't been a lonely boy at all – I'd had a very happy childhood.

  • I was just reading about him on Wikipedia...this guy was born August 2, 1951 (Summer of '51)..how ironic...so my first thought automatically that the song was autobiographical. But then read further down and discovered he was asked about this song in an interview.

  • I was a lonely Boy !

  • @soylisto2 yeah me too.

  • I always thought the verses had the the coolest time signature, but it was still balls-depressing when I was a kid.

huh - I forgot all about that boogie-rock bridge - actually the drumming toward the end ain't bad

right on - teachin' him to fight to be nobody's fool. that'll learn'em.

  • I was in HS when this came out, remember there was so many of these one hit wonder back in the 70's great music and times.

  • Love this song. Thanks for posting it:) Takes me back.

  • Water Boy

  • Quite a good song.

    So sad however.

    Thank you.

  • AnnaAnnaYes, you remind me of the guy I work for, he's an idiot too, for your information, Andrew Gold died of a heart attack but he also had Renal Cancer, Umm Renal Cancer is Cancer of the kidneys you moron, has nothing whatsoever to do with AIDS and if he had AIDS and was gay or was bisexual or whatever, big flippin' deal, just shows what an immature idiot you are. He had a couple of hits, made some money and died a family man, good for him, what the hell are you gonna do with your life?

  • @Quimby54 Andrew Gold used to date Peter North and John Holmes, who like Andrew Gold were born again bisexuals

  • @Quimby54 You have misunderstood me I DID'NT Say he died from AIDS

That other idiot did.Go back and reread the Whole conversation before you

    insult me!!

  • Andrew Gold died in his sleep from heart failure. He was 59. So to those who choose to believe he was gay or bi, you are just too stupid. Have some respect for the man he was married 2 times and had 3 daughters. Jeeze people get a grip!!

  • @cdpwillprevail1 I Know that, but there are so many people who are so

quick to argue, they don't care to read the whole conversation.

  • Eddie Adams from Torrance

  • Andrew Gold caught Aids from Freddie Mercury

  • @TheWeaselSqueezer That is so unfunny,i hope no one you love dies a cruel death.

  • @AnnaAnnaYes why is Andrew Golds homosexuality your guilty pleasure?

  • @TheWeaselSqueezer I don't wish to argue.i was just wondering why you

    said that,that's all.

  • @AnnaAnnaYes because Andrew Gold was a born again bisexual who died a very young man because of Aids virus

  • @TheWeaselSqueezer I do not recall reading this. But i guess you can post what

    you want.

  • @AnnaAnnaYes Andrew Gold is dead because he prefered sausage to pussy

  • @TheWeaselSqueezer Heterosexuals die from AIDS too, although that is not

what killed Andrew Gold. But i don't wish to argue with you ,believe what you want.

  • @AnnaAnnaYes I heard that black men have large dicks, but you only cum on the fat white ones?

  • @AnnaAnnaYes you still enjoy hardcore Anal sex while you listen to Andrew Gold songs?

  • @TheWeaselSqueezer Maybe he's trying to compensate for his own worthless homosexuality.......or even worse, his lack of personal equipment...Who knows?...better yet......WHO CARES?

  • I 'm a bright shining star. Dirk Diggler rules!

  • Great song!! Listen to those drums from MIKE BOTTS ( of BREAD). He was great in Bread too. Good friend of Andrew and Linda's. RIP to Andrew a great singer and Rip to Mike a great drummer both soooo talented and underappreciated. Rock out in heaven.

  • @patttij0807 i loved mike botts. No one ever mentions him,but he was a very good player and well respected among california musicians

  • @IwontConform Mike was awesome. I went to see Linda in concert to see him but he had gone back to Bread! Loved them too. I became a big LR fan and Andrew Gold fan by buying their albums because Mike was drumming. I already had all of Breads. So glad you were a fan of Mikes too.

  • look, I don't know about all you old guys, but i remember when this song came out, and I'm only 29. then again I've been 29 ,uh, 20 times. Holy sheep dip splat man, I'm old too. Great song though.

  • This came out I think when Happy Day"s were on TV????Not sure but I was only 14 but man I jammed to this little ditty....I think this song got to me a bit because i was the only boy out of eight children,oh what a lonely boy..LOL

  • Me too..

  • why are all the brilliant stars of 70s and 80s dying???

  • @alison6902 lol, could it be that they, as well as we, r getting old!

  • RIP. brilliant tune though. i live in the past. i always listen to 70s and 80s music. i was born in 1964. i feel privileged to have been young in the 70s and 80s era! awesome!!!!!!

  • @alison6902 I agree. I was born in 61..

  • Gotta love that last note.

  • Is that Waddy on guitar?

  • @michellesupport89 Andrew Gold – vocals, piano, cowbell Waddy Wachtel – lead guitar Dan Dugmore – rhythm guitar Kenny Edwards – bass guitar Brock Walsh – electric piano, Mike Botts – drums, percussion Linda Ronstadt – backing vocals Peter Asher – handclaps

  • Love this song. RIP Andrew. Linda Ronstadt on background right? In the "We must attend to her needs she's so much younger than you" part.

  • REAL MUSIC :3 SO SAD CUZ I GOT TO HEAR THE CRAP OF 2012 :/, I'D LOVE TO BE OLDER TO ENJOY THIS BEAUTIFUL MUSIC EVERYWHERE (L)

  • @denissrainbow You missed a great era of music, my friend. It was great to be there the first time. This just brings back wonderful memories of my childhood.

  • dig that lead guitar better than most pretty damn killer

  • Great song, brings back sweet memories.

  • The very first time I heard this song it became an instant lifetime favorite of mine. Oh, what a great song !! :)

  • spinedr3337. Right on Brotha. We did the same thing in DC. Great times, with a soundtrack of life that caries us still today. U Rock.

  • this song always made me so sad as a kid

  • Such a great song. Such sad lyrics. Thanks for all your beautiful music Andrew xx

  • RIP Andrew Gold, such a lovely song. Thank you.

  • I love this song.

    Rest in Peace Andrew.

  • and the most connected, most friend-ed generation is the loneliest generation cuz kids don't go play and get slurpees at 7-11 as spinedr3337 says!!!!!! ----- that guitar jam rocks (2:04)

  • This is the kind of song that tugs at the heart...I will never tire of listening to it. RIP Andrew.

  • I'm glad he was able to capture the feeling this song needed in the studio, especially the last vocal note; anything less and it might not have been the big hit it was. Love this song. Glad to know he never gave up trying to make the radio again after "Thank you for being a friend" more than likely made him richer than he could have imagined as the opening song for "Golden Girls" (interesting - until this very moment I had not made the correlation between the name of the show and his name).

  • Yeah...I agree it really was a much simpliar time back then, just hanging out with friends and having fun.

  • @bobbie405 ..and sniffing cocain, miss those times

  • I will always remember this song because i know exactly where i was when it was big on the radio and an event that happened and where i was at the time.

Spokane Washington 1977 in a hotel room on vacation. Watching tv and George Willig climbed the World Trade Center. Always remember watching that on the news that night. I couldn't believe what he was doing.

This song was huge at that time. Oh memories.. A simpler time.

  • oh shit, Black Keys?

  • It's great to hear the memories of those times. I agree with recent posts that we would spend our time outside listening to the AM stations and playing games like Manhunt, Freeze Tag, TV Freeze Tag, and of course there were a few games of Spin the Bottle and so on... Great times. We didn't seem to have any real boundaries like we do today.

  • classic song

  • awsome yes I miss some of those days remember when MTV first came on THE VIDEOS LOL

  • That doesn't sound stupid at all....Back then, thats exactly what I and my friends did. Seems like times have changed so much......so glad to be born in the mid 60's and grow up when I did!

  • Andrew Gold

    August 2, 1951- June 3, 2011.

  • Fun Fact: The Chicago Department of Revenue will play this song on loop while you're on hold for an hour... and by the 26th time around you'll want to poke your eardrums out. Ha.

  • I saw him in Summer of '77 was the opening act for Eagle Hotel California tour, when I saw him on the ticket I was so disappointed...until I saw his show, excellent performer, song writer, and still remains as one of my most pleasant surprises/experiences.

  • again, great music never gets old

  • I still love this song so much. A timeless classic. Andrew may have died recently but will forever thanks to his wonderful contributions and for the fact that he shared his God given talents with the world.

  • @trppey66 Linda Ronstadt owes her career to Andrew Gold. He arranged and performed many of the instruments on her "Heart Like a Wheel" album, which yielded her #1 smash "You're No Good". He truly shared his gifts, and is honestly an underappreciated genius. He deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

  • Grew up painfully thin as a little kid. I didn't have a lot of friends living close by. We were poor and couldn't afford the fancy clothes, etc. I remember listening to this song and just feeling so alone. One day the tears just ran down my face as I sat quietly listening to this song..

  • ♪♪♪♪♪♥♪♪♪♪♪

  • My unhealed wounds have contributed to destroying every friendship and relationship I've ever been gifted with, and after 51 years of wreckage and pain I think about ending my life pretty much every day.

  • I remember this song in 1977. Tells a story. If you had siblings, you may have felt this way. Nice to hear it again. Songs today in 2011 don't tell stories like this.

  • Awesome song, in the rare style of the story teller.

  • How did he die?

  • @bobpawlak1964 i just read he died in his sleep earlier this year, apparently of heart failure. he had recently been treated for renal cancer.

  • i listen to this 10 times back to back thank you Andrew and RIP

  • this song is BEAUTIFUL!!, but it also makes me cry. cause it remindes me of my own life...

  • oh what a lonely boy! xept im a woman, but always love this song, I have this habit of loving old songs, yippee, dont conform:-)

  • guilty pleasure innit!!

  • was this his only hit

  • @rgbarry1 ... Please look up his other hit "Thank You for Being A Friend" ... that was a big hit! Actually, most people have heard of the song, and this was used in an old t.v. series program called "Golden Girls" let me know what you think of the song. - peace out

  • @rgbarry1 Nope

  • Loved this song.

  • RIP Andrew Gold, an underappreciated 70s singer.

  • @MovieGuy247com well said.

  • @MovieGuy247com Oh, he was so much more than a singer. He could pretty much play any instrument he could get his hands on.

  • @sonicfrogdotnet Linda Rondstadt's band leader pretty much wasn't he? Waddy replaced him as much as he could, Andrew was musician's musician may we meet on the other side RIP Mr Gold.

  • @MovieGuy247com You may find that Andrew Gold went waaaaay beyond these '70s hits--and this is a favourite of mine! A songwriter who knew no obstacles between genres, he was the consummate musician's musician. Three of the former Beatles called on him (George must have missed the call) and so did countless others. What is more, what is much more, this was a truly good man with a wicked sense of humour, mostly about himself. God bless his widow, his daughters and his many admiring friends.

  • @MovieGuy247com

I totally agree! It's too bad he had to die so young!!!

  • I am singing this today!

  • Back then, we'd come home from school, you'd get together with your friends and hang out until it got dark. Then home for dinner. Maybe hang out some more later with your friends that lived nearby. It sounds stupid, but we had a 7-11 about 2 miles from the house. In the summer, my friends and I would WALK there and talk and laugh. Two hours spent walking with my best friends, hanging out and getting a soda and then walking home. Best talks of my life...

  • @spinedr3337 sounds just like my life back in them good old days.

  • @spinedr3337 - That's so funny, I did the same thing (walk hours to get to a convenience store with friends). the kids back then were POOR but we made our own fun. Our parents gave us nothing, it was an accomplishment to get a piece of shxx car. This song and your comment brings back many good memories.

  • @peeweecee Ditto on parents didn't give you anything, we didn't need anything we had each other (friends) and just loved being together. My neighborhood had 40ish kids of all ages running around, and we lived in a village of 1000. We could field 2 full baseball, football, basketball teams anytime we wanted. We listened to the radio all the time too, the HQ transistor radios that you could almost make out what song was on :-)

  • @spinedr3337 Doesn't sound stupid at all. It sounds like my life in those days. Thank God I grew up in a time when you could spend all day hanging out with your friends and your parents knew you were coming home. I miss that old 7-11 too.

  • I love these old tunes and peoples comments and mental images of days gone by. I have similar memories.

  • @spinedr3337 53 thumbs up (including mine) and counting--but how many who are giving you thumbs up have brought up obese children who are incapable of a conversation and who are plugged into video games or cellphones every waking hour. Walk to the store? How, when they believe every living, breathing adult on earth wants to make them sexual prey? They can't even walk to the school bus stop. Their parents who walked and rode their bikes everywhere are waiting for them in the SUV, engine running.

  • @spinedr3337

Sounds like what I did back when I was a kid. I miss those days very much, the good'ol days!!!

  • @spinedr3337 I so miss the 70's. It was just a beautiful time !

  • @1965JLO me too.It was a cornier time,a more naive time,and a more sentimental time,but infinitely more enjoyable time.If i could go back,i certainly would

  • @spinedr3337 i remember

  • @spinedr3337 that sound exactly what we did in my nieghborhood ! 7-11 and all! it was also about 2miles away.

  • I love this stuff, too. I was born in 66 so this was my formative music. I was damned lucky! You know what, though? This song made me pull up the Top 100 hits for 73-78 on the internet & I saw SO MANY songs that I had forgotten about. When I listened to many of them, I felt like a little kid. Life was so simple then. What a different world. What a BETTER world. God, I miss that world. So in the end, it all made me pretty sad. Getting old sucks.

  • @spinedr3337 Oh gosh! I feel the same way and couldn't have said it better myself. I still have this and many great "oldies" on 45 rpm & LP records (Michael Jackson's "Thriller" & "Bad" on LP, many of Elton John's 70's & 80's hits & the clear LP released for Herb Alperts' "Rise" are among my favorites). I bet those records are worth something right now, but I'd never part with them. I'll have to pull them out and play them again. I still do have a turntable! LOL!

  • This song as well as the songs in this era (Pop and Rock) put a smile on my face!!! I was like 14 years old at the time ...

  • Great song, talented musician

  • I was in the US Navy when this song came out. Liked it then, like it now!

  • I'm so sad to hear about his passing. It seems like just yesterday I was that lonley boy listening to this when it first come on the air. RIP Mr. Gold and may God keep you safe ti I meet you in heaven ~

  • Great single still have my original copy, still plays, R.I.P. Andrew thank you some wonderful music, timeless and unique.

  • i descovered this song through steve wright on radio 2, is awsome,!!!!

  • I wish I was born in that decade...

  • @gorrilazfan64 it was the best and sweetest time of my life, was 16 and it was so speacial you cant describe it,the music everything,i miss it very very much today dosent compare not even close, wish you had the pleasure.

  • I love this song soooooooo cool!

  • A song about a brat...

  • @ConservativeAnthem He was probably singing about a conservative in that case.

  • i never get tired of this

  • Andrew is gone now but his music will go on forever. A powerful song but it was not autobiographical.

  • Great and classic refrain...what a hook!

  • I always had a picture in my head of the boy he was singing about, based on the lyrics, and it was always was a kid with glasses that looked to me like the male counterpart of Velma from Scooby Doo! LOL

  • It's a brilliant reminder of my teenage years! Thank you, Andrew Gold!

  • Great song ! Guitar solo goes right through you with the headphones!

  • @banshee247 So true. He was a master guitarist for Linda Rondstadt on "You're not good." you can hear and fel the genius.

  • @MrVeesworld Just saw Linda Rondstadts live vid with him on guitar Great!

  • Great song !

  • SHE gave HER a son... How did he screw that up? 3:16

  • @av8ral I never got that line, either.

  • Great song great times, a whole life ahead; it couldn't get here quick enough. Man, if Time were a living being I'd embrace it, hug it and ask where have you been so long? Still riding that rail

  • great song RIP ANDREW THANKS FOR THE MUSIC

  • oh my goodness, tears in my eyes... p.s. he also sang 'Thank you for being a friend' which is another amazing song... it's the theme for the Golden Girls tv series so I hear it often as I flip through channels on tv. RIP Andrew, you were pure Gold

  • Just heard that he passed a few weeks ago. Very sad. This guy was a real talent. Ask anybody whoever played with him.

By the way, at 1:14. that's Linda Ronstadt singing the little duet line.

  • Thanks vidojukebox1@..brings back so many memories. That solo lead guitar in the middle still gives me the chills after ALL these years..the phrasing, timing and delivery.. is excellent....It's a shame Andrew left us so early, but he is imortilized in his music...

  • R.I.P. Andrew
