Although Gold put personal references in "Lonely Boy" (1977) including his year of birth, he admitted in an interview that it was not autobiographical: "Maybe it was a mistake to do that but I simply put in those details because it was convenient. I hadn't been a lonely boy at all – I'd had a very happy childhood.
I was just reading about him on Wikipedia...this guy was born August 2, 1951 (Summer of '51)..how ironic...so my first thought automatically that the song was autobiographical. But then read further down and discovered he was asked about this song in an interview.
AnnaAnnaYes, you remind me of the guy I work for, he's an idiot too, for your information, Andrew Gold died of a heart attack but he also had Renal Cancer, Umm Renal Cancer is Cancer of the kidneys you moron, has nothing whatsoever to do with AIDS and if he had AIDS and was gay or was bisexual or whatever, big flippin' deal, just shows what an immature idiot you are. He had a couple of hits, made some money and died a family man, good for him, what the hell are you gonna do with your life?
Andrew Gold died in his sleep from heart failure. He was 59. So to those who choose to believe he was gay or bi, you are just too stupid. Have some respect for the man he was married 2 times and had 3 daughters. Jeeze people get a grip!!
@TheWeaselSqueezer Maybe he's trying to compensate for his own worthless homosexuality.......or even worse, his lack of personal equipment...Who knows?...better yet......WHO CARES?
Great song!! Listen to those drums from MIKE BOTTS ( of BREAD). He was great in Bread too. Good friend of Andrew and Linda's. RIP to Andrew a great singer and Rip to Mike a great drummer both soooo talented and underappreciated. Rock out in heaven.
@IwontConform Mike was awesome. I went to see Linda in concert to see him but he had gone back to Bread! Loved them too. I became a big LR fan and Andrew Gold fan by buying their albums because Mike was drumming. I already had all of Breads. So glad you were a fan of Mikes too.
look, I don't know about all you old guys, but i remember when this song came out, and I'm only 29. then again I've been 29 ,uh, 20 times. Holy sheep dip splat man, I'm old too. Great song though.
This came out I think when Happy Day"s were on TV????Not sure but I was only 14 but man I jammed to this little ditty....I think this song got to me a bit because i was the only boy out of eight children,oh what a lonely boy..LOL
RIP. brilliant tune though. i live in the past. i always listen to 70s and 80s music. i was born in 1964. i feel privileged to have been young in the 70s and 80s era! awesome!!!!!!
@denissrainbow You missed a great era of music, my friend. It was great to be there the first time. This just brings back wonderful memories of my childhood.
and the most connected, most friend-ed generation is the loneliest generation cuz kids don't go play and get slurpees at 7-11 as spinedr3337 says!!!!!! ----- that guitar jam rocks (2:04)
I'm glad he was able to capture the feeling this song needed in the studio, especially the last vocal note; anything less and it might not have been the big hit it was. Love this song. Glad to know he never gave up trying to make the radio again after "Thank you for being a friend" more than likely made him richer than he could have imagined as the opening song for "Golden Girls" (interesting - until this very moment I had not made the correlation between the name of the show and his name).
I will always remember this song because i know exactly where i was when it was big on the radio and an event that happened and where i was at the time.
Spokane Washington 1977 in a hotel room on vacation. Watching tv and George Willig climbed the World Trade Center. Always remember watching that on the news that night. I couldn't believe what he was doing.
This song was huge at that time. Oh memories.. A simpler time.
It's great to hear the memories of those times. I agree with recent posts that we would spend our time outside listening to the AM stations and playing games like Manhunt, Freeze Tag, TV Freeze Tag, and of course there were a few games of Spin the Bottle and so on... Great times. We didn't seem to have any real boundaries like we do today.
That doesn't sound stupid at all....Back then, thats exactly what I and my friends did. Seems like times have changed so much......so glad to be born in the mid 60's and grow up when I did!
Fun Fact: The Chicago Department of Revenue will play this song on loop while you're on hold for an hour... and by the 26th time around you'll want to poke your eardrums out. Ha.
I saw him in Summer of '77 was the opening act for Eagle Hotel California tour, when I saw him on the ticket I was so disappointed...until I saw his show, excellent performer, song writer, and still remains as one of my most pleasant surprises/experiences.
I still love this song so much. A timeless classic. Andrew may have died recently but will forever thanks to his wonderful contributions and for the fact that he shared his God given talents with the world.
@trppey66 Linda Ronstadt owes her career to Andrew Gold. He arranged and performed many of the instruments on her "Heart Like a Wheel" album, which yielded her #1 smash "You're No Good". He truly shared his gifts, and is honestly an underappreciated genius. He deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Grew up painfully thin as a little kid. I didn't have a lot of friends living close by. We were poor and couldn't afford the fancy clothes, etc. I remember listening to this song and just feeling so alone. One day the tears just ran down my face as I sat quietly listening to this song..
My unhealed wounds have contributed to destroying every friendship and relationship I've ever been gifted with, and after 51 years of wreckage and pain I think about ending my life pretty much every day.
I remember this song in 1977. Tells a story. If you had siblings, you may have felt this way. Nice to hear it again. Songs today in 2011 don't tell stories like this.
@rgbarry1 ... Please look up his other hit "Thank You for Being A Friend" ... that was a big hit! Actually, most people have heard of the song, and this was used in an old t.v. series program called "Golden Girls" let me know what you think of the song. - peace out
@sonicfrogdotnet Linda Rondstadt's band leader pretty much wasn't he? Waddy replaced him as much as he could, Andrew was musician's musician may we meet on the other side RIP Mr Gold.
@MovieGuy247com You may find that Andrew Gold went waaaaay beyond these '70s hits--and this is a favourite of mine! A songwriter who knew no obstacles between genres, he was the consummate musician's musician. Three of the former Beatles called on him (George must have missed the call) and so did countless others. What is more, what is much more, this was a truly good man with a wicked sense of humour, mostly about himself. God bless his widow, his daughters and his many admiring friends.
Back then, we'd come home from school, you'd get together with your friends and hang out until it got dark. Then home for dinner. Maybe hang out some more later with your friends that lived nearby. It sounds stupid, but we had a 7-11 about 2 miles from the house. In the summer, my friends and I would WALK there and talk and laugh. Two hours spent walking with my best friends, hanging out and getting a soda and then walking home. Best talks of my life...
@spinedr3337 - That's so funny, I did the same thing (walk hours to get to a convenience store with friends). the kids back then were POOR but we made our own fun. Our parents gave us nothing, it was an accomplishment to get a piece of shxx car. This song and your comment brings back many good memories.
@peeweecee Ditto on parents didn't give you anything, we didn't need anything we had each other (friends) and just loved being together. My neighborhood had 40ish kids of all ages running around, and we lived in a village of 1000. We could field 2 full baseball, football, basketball teams anytime we wanted. We listened to the radio all the time too, the HQ transistor radios that you could almost make out what song was on :-)
@spinedr3337 Doesn't sound stupid at all. It sounds like my life in those days. Thank God I grew up in a time when you could spend all day hanging out with your friends and your parents knew you were coming home. I miss that old 7-11 too.
@spinedr3337 53 thumbs up (including mine) and counting--but how many who are giving you thumbs up have brought up obese children who are incapable of a conversation and who are plugged into video games or cellphones every waking hour. Walk to the store? How, when they believe every living, breathing adult on earth wants to make them sexual prey? They can't even walk to the school bus stop. Their parents who walked and rode their bikes everywhere are waiting for them in the SUV, engine running.
@1965JLO me too.It was a cornier time,a more naive time,and a more sentimental time,but infinitely more enjoyable time.If i could go back,i certainly would
I love this stuff, too. I was born in 66 so this was my formative music. I was damned lucky! You know what, though? This song made me pull up the Top 100 hits for 73-78 on the internet & I saw SO MANY songs that I had forgotten about. When I listened to many of them, I felt like a little kid. Life was so simple then. What a different world. What a BETTER world. God, I miss that world. So in the end, it all made me pretty sad. Getting old sucks.
@spinedr3337 Oh gosh! I feel the same way and couldn't have said it better myself. I still have this and many great "oldies" on 45 rpm & LP records (Michael Jackson's "Thriller" & "Bad" on LP, many of Elton John's 70's & 80's hits & the clear LP released for Herb Alperts' "Rise" are among my favorites). I bet those records are worth something right now, but I'd never part with them. I'll have to pull them out and play them again. I still do have a turntable! LOL!
best year in my life,1st everything steppin out and findeing who i was,1st girlfriend never forget her my 1st love what a time the music the bomb, what a romantic time, sanford and son, archie bunker,my foxy french teacher she smelled wonderful, what a time, man miss it so much
I'm so sad to hear about his passing. It seems like just yesterday I was that lonley boy listening to this when it first come on the air. RIP Mr. Gold and may God keep you safe ti I meet you in heaven ~
@gorrilazfan64 it was the best and sweetest time of my life, was 16 and it was so speacial you cant describe it,the music everything,i miss it very very much today dosent compare not even close, wish you had the pleasure.
I always had a picture in my head of the boy he was singing about, based on the lyrics, and it was always was a kid with glasses that looked to me like the male counterpart of Velma from Scooby Doo! LOL
Great song great times, a whole life ahead; it couldn't get here quick enough. Man, if Time were a living being I'd embrace it, hug it and ask where have you been so long? Still riding that rail
oh my goodness, tears in my eyes... p.s. he also sang 'Thank you for being a friend' which is another amazing song... it's the theme for the Golden Girls tv series so I hear it often as I flip through channels on tv. RIP Andrew, you were pure Gold
Thanks vidojukebox1@..brings back so many memories. That solo lead guitar in the middle still gives me the chills after ALL these years..the phrasing, timing and delivery.. is excellent....It's a shame Andrew left us so early, but he is imortilized in his music...
When this song came out I was working in one of the roughest bars in Manchester ,England and this always seemed to calm people down ( whenever there was a threat of violence ) God bless you Andrew Gold-you saved my life on many an occasion. Rest in Peace my man.
@JhillyBean His Father was Ernest Gold (famous movie soundtrack composer) and his Mother, Marnie Nixon, did voice-over singing for many leading female stars (e.g., singing voice of Maria, for Natalie Wood, in "West Side Story.")
I really like this song .i grew up with it Thank u 4 posting.

LOL!
