Once you get to a certain level of wealth, LewWaters, it's possible to make money simply by having money. Now I grant you that it may have taken some effort to get there in the first place (or maybe not), but after you get to that point you can simply sit back and collect the dividend check and live off that. That doesn't require any effort at all. And once you get to that level, you are in an entirely different world than someone who has only his labor to sell in order to get by in this world.

You also have to know when to buy and when to sell which requires a great deal of attention paid to the market, the economy, business decisions and the overall mood of the buying public. Although I never had the money to make it big in investments, I took a course many years ago on investing and it is very much a gamble that eats up a lot of time and takes a lot of energy.

While not getting wealthy in monetary terms, I have lived a fairly good life, raised children to adulthood, bought a home, bought several cars over the years and not once harbored any grudge that those who took the risks received the bulk of the rewards. Until you put out the risk and investment they did, you are entitled to no more than a paycheck.

I know that many of the goods I enjoy today are made by corporations. However, I believe there's a better way of organizing human beings together to create goods and services which don't create these conflicts between Capital and Labor. What we need are Worker Cooperatives, owned and democratically controlled by the workers themselves, like the Mondragon Cooperatives in Spain.

But, the first thing you (by you I mean people willing to set one up, not necessarily you personally) must be ready to make the sacrifice to get a small company rolling. You might also consider the book the Myth of the Mondragon Cooperatives by Sharryn Kasmir. (and no, I haven't read it yet either, just a suggestion)

I'll grant you that Mondragon isn't utopian, but I still believe it to be superior to the standard capitalist model and I'd like to see the idea expanded and improved upon.

The two biggest hurdles are: (1) Raising the neccesarry credit to start one, and (2) Making people aware of the idea in the first place since the concept seems to be so little known. If I had my druthers, I would work for a coop and shop exclusively at coop establishments. But at the moment I don't have that option. I hope that capitalism dies a quiet and peaceful death and the cooperative movement replaces it.

I don't agree with all the ILWU tactics, but I can't support LewWaters bashing of unions in general. Union members are going the way of the Dodo in this country. I'm sure LewWaters would like to see them go extinct. But there's a direct correlation between union membership and the economic equality. If anyone is openminded on this issue, google it. The lower the percentage of union members, the greater the economic inequality.

But, when they reach out too far, like the UAW did and drive companies into bankruptcy, they help no one. There is two sides to every issue and unions have to begin paying the fair share too. So far, they don't want to.

Corporations are the leeches. For a corporation to make a profit, workers must neccesarily be paid less than the value that they create. That surplus value goes to the executives who get paid hundreds of times more than the average worker. Shareholders get money for doing nothing: they can sit on their asses collecting a dividend check.
