From the experience I've seen from users on forums and in articles, Windows 7 is good on old hardware. Though if you're running 10 year old hardware, it's time to upgrade anyway.

The comment about older XP hardware not being able to run Win7 especially if hardware couldn't run Vista, I can say from experience that my hardware that was too old to run Vista ran Win 7 like a champ. My laptop, 1ghz 384mb ram runs Win 7 fine, if a little slow when trying to crunch Flash or multitasking.
Point is still valid though, if your computer was purchased when XP was first released, you probably need a new machine anyway.

Most of this bad Vista atmosphere is just lingering attitude from its launch, if you get Vista and get it fully up to date now, its said to have nothing like the level of problems it did at launch and gaming performance is now about the same as XP. Alot of people probably wouldn't want to upgrade their OS because Vista actually works now, it just went through alot of shit when there was barely any support for it.
Yup, Vista running on a modern reasonably specced PC is just fine and has no problems at all. And yup most people wont bother upgrading the OS. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)

Screw Windows 7 than. My old hardware Dell is running on an old single core Pentium 4 3.2GHZ CPU with 2GB Ram and 80GB HDD. It came with Windows XP, but I think I'll dual boot it with Ubuntu or another linux distro. At least Linux can run properly on old PCs. As far as the best, I run Mac OS X Snow Leopard on my iMac.
You can run Windows 7 on your P4 3.2Ghz, I was able to install Win7 on my old Dell D600. It ran in the usable area and it only has an 1.4Ghz so you should be okay with your 3.2Ghz. I believe that Microsoft is making a mistake buy opening there stores, it only shows that there are a follower. It would be nice if the Iphone wasn't only on At&t's network, but you have a point with exclusive phone. If you want to use and Iphone then you use At&t period.

The real problem with Windows Vista and Windows 7, is that it just doesn't add any value above Windows XP. So there's really no need for 90% of people to upgrade. For the majority of business users who do word processing, spreadsheets and a few business apps, there will be no real benefit from switching to Windows 7. So why should they bother upgrading hardware and buying new licenses? Windows only manages to sell their OS because it is bundled with new computers.

The machine I'm posting this on right now is about 3 years old and windows 7 runs extremely well. 64bit Win7 with only 2gb of ram, and its a lot better than Vista with the same amount of ram. Vista never gave me problems past SP1, and I think it is a statement of ignorance to call it things like a "public beta".
I'm glad I didn't upgrade my imac to snow leopard given all the issues people are having with it. I'll wait until they're resolved AND THEN upgrade.
The PalmPre is a pretty good phone, but I don't like anything with a touch interface as far as phones go.
Also, people did have a choice of not using IE. Netscape Navigator was available and better, they just made the choice not to get it because IE was bundled. If you have issue with MS bundling software, you should feel the same way about Apple doing so.
Except that there was an incident in which I believe that M$ bullied the OEM by threatening to pull their Windows license if they started to ship their computers with Netscape bundled, as a result, the U.S. Government raped M$ with a big huge Anti-Trust cock.

i make apps for the iphone and i hafta follow tons of rules. if i use the usb i hafta follows rules but its still open. if i use bluetooth, again, rules. theirs rules and regulations, but those same rules dont always apply to the same products being used on them. for example, if i write a code to sync calender with windows, those same codes dont need to work for mac. another example is the standard mini usb in europe, apple doesnt need to go by that cause they will make an adapter and include it

The comment about older XP hardware not being able to run Win7 especially if hardware couldn't run Vista, I can say from experience that my hardware that was too old to run Vista ran Win 7 like a champ. My laptop, 1ghz 384mb ram runs Win 7 fine, if a little slow when trying to crunch Flash or multitasking.
Point is still valid though, if your computer was purchased when XP was first released, you probably need a new machine anyway.

Most of this bad Vista atmosphere is just lingering attitude from its launch, if you get Vista and get it fully up to date now, its said to have nothing like the level of problems it did at launch and gaming performance is now about the same as XP. Alot of people probably wouldn't want to upgrade their OS because Vista actually works now, it just went through alot of shit when there was barely any support for it.

Screw Windows 7 than. My old hardware Dell is running on an old single core Pentium 4 3.2GHZ CPU with 2GB Ram and 80GB HDD. It came with Windows XP, but I think I'll dual boot it with Ubuntu or another linux distro. At least Linux can run properly on old PCs. As far as the best, I run Mac OS X Snow Leopard on my iMac.

You can run Windows 7 on your P4 3.2Ghz, I was able to install Win7 on my old Dell D600. It ran in the usable area and it only has an 1.4Ghz so you should be okay with your 3.2Ghz. I believe that Microsoft is making a mistake buy opening there stores, it only shows that there are a follower. It would be nice if the Iphone wasn't only on At&t's network, but you have a point with exclusive phone. If you want to use and Iphone then you use At&t period.

No, China also have their own stupid standard TD-SCDMA. Korea only recently allowed the iPhone into their market (they like to protect Samsung and LG). Many other countries are similarly backwards and use non-standardized technology. EVDO and WiMax are just two examples of people pushing stupid solutions.

FYI China also has two well established GSM networks as well, which are compatible with all GSM phones.
In Hong Kong there is no less than five GSM networks to chose from, and all phones here are available unlocked, including the Iphone.

Hey Eric, what's wrong with an open internet? I'm NOT saying that other companies should have access to iTunes or the App Store. I'm just saying that having the iPhone on multiple carriers (or all phones for that matter) wouldn't be a bad thing.
Also, net neutrality laws that would force carriers like AT&T to allow Skype to run over 3G would also be good for the consumer. It would hurt AT&T but I don't see how this is a problem for Apple.

The real problem with Windows Vista and Windows 7, is that it just doesn't add any value above Windows XP. So there's really no need for 90% of people to upgrade. For the majority of business users who do word processing, spreadsheets and a few business apps, there will be no real benefit from switching to Windows 7. So why should they bother upgrading hardware and buying new licenses? Windows only manages to sell their OS because it is bundled with new computers.

I think his point was that most people don't go out and buy retail boxed Windows. The vast majority of Windows sales are when people are buying new computers. To replace the old one which is either defective, or can no longer perform the tasks the user requires of it.
From what I've seen most non-techy computer users don't bother with system upgrades, they just replace the whole computer. Like they would replace a washing machine or television, when the old one is worn out or broken.

You asked why Windows 7 would run any faster than what Vista did. The answer is because Windows 7 did under the hood changes. I have seen with my own eyes the tremendous performance improvements. My laptop booted in 1 min. 30 seconds in Vista and in Windows 7, 35 seconds. Most businesses don't migrate to OSs quickly. Most go on 5 year cycles, 30% of businesses to windows 7 in 2 years is really good.. You're spreading FUD AppleSoldier, Windows 7 runs faster on older hardware.

How do you figure that? The market share in the gaming industry is balanced. It's not evenly distributed, but there's different companies with varying amounts of market share.
Apple controls over 70% of the PMP market. Their software iTunes is a major factor in that. Allowing iTunes to sync DRM-free music with other devices would allow more open competition. How many people know how to move their music collection to a new media center/organizer/thingamajig/jukebox?

I agree this is a last ditch effort for palm. They've been steadily losing money since 2007, when apple squashed them with the iPhone. Whether the palm pre is a direct rip off of the iPhones touch screen is another story intirely. But here's the thing: iTunes was invented to stimulate iPod sells, end of story. The machine I'm posting this on right now is about 3 years old and windows 7 runs extremely well. 64bit Win7 with only 2gb of ram, and its a lot better than Vista with the same amount of ram. Vista never gave me problems past SP1, and I think it is a statement of ignorance to call it things like a "public beta".
I'm glad I didn't upgrade my imac to snow leopard given all the issues people are having with it. I'll wait until they're resolved AND THEN upgrade.

The PalmPre is a pretty good phone, but I don't like anything with a touch interface as far as phones go.
Also, people did have a choice of not using IE. Netscape Navigator was available and better, they just made the choice not to get it because IE was bundled. If you have issue with MS bundling software, you should feel the same way about Apple doing so.

It doesn't matter, it isn't about bundling. If the product is available AT ALL there is no reason to bitch. Apple bundling safari is just as bad as MS bundling IE, and if you think otherwise you're a hypocrite.

Eric is misinformed or he misstated his information, this entire business with Palm has nothing to do with the App store, it has to do with syncing DRM-free music. Palm has its own app store, with plenty of developers. They couldn't care less what Apple does with the App Store.
Check a few sources for information before you go around bashing Palm due to information you got from this twit's video.

I use a Blackberry Curve because I am on Verizon's network! The Pre is a cheap-feeling plastic phone - I know - I use my girlfriend's all the time.

i make apps for the iphone and i hafta follow tons of rules. if i use the usb i hafta follows rules but its still open. if i use bluetooth, again, rules. theirs rules and regulations, but those same rules dont always apply to the same products being used on them. for example, if i write a code to sync calender with windows, those same codes dont need to work for mac. another example is the standard mini usb in europe, apple doesnt need to go by that cause they will make an adapter and include it

What's your point? I'm not claiming that Apple's iPhone apps have to run on webOS at all, I'm saying the opposite of that. This legal business between Palm and Apple has NOTHING to do with the apps and app store, it has to do with iTunes abusing the USB vendor ID.
