Why did the Europeans starve and resort to cannibalism when they had guns in which to hunt game? I am not sure about then, but it's easy to spot deer in the woods of north eastern America.
@solobackpacking Well, like ray said, the only food they found were those plant roots. And not only that, but if it was winter, animals would have been scarce anyway.
i have found that cat tail fluff actually is a rather poor tinder. If it is really fluffy it burns in an instant and then goes out. if it is held in a bundle it just wont light at all. if you have nothing else it will work but it's not easy.
ray is a bit of a dick for taking the ember away from buddy and doing it himself. he may be skilled in bushcraft, but that act showed lack of tact and leadership.
@SpaceM0nkey620 No I'm pretty sure it's a Karrimor Sabre 45 litre pack, he sells them on his website, Snugpak makes a similar one though, the Rocket Pak
@SpaceM0nkey620 It's a PLCE Bergen in olive green, he must have got it unissued or with very light use judging by the condition it's in. They were issued to UK forces until around 1990 and since then are only available in DPM, the olive green ones are quite sought after these days. No way a pack that size is 45 litres.

I know what you saying and I have felt like that outdoors, however it's more likely he is looking to make sure nothing has been left behind on the ground. Basic outdoor skills, always check the ground you stopped at before you move off. Nice comment however and you might be right.

One would think the survivors would open up a Human Restaurant after their learning experience.

You notice Ray at 5:00 ? Hes just standing there in another world in a daydream as the others are walking off.
That happens alot with people when out in the wilderness.
Their mind becomes relaxed and starts to obsorb the calming influence of the surrounding nature.
Very much like the old 'Camp Fire Stare'
