Haven't read all the post on here so I don't know if it's been posted but I do beleive this is Ike Enns plane in Tulsa, Ok. I have seen this plane many times and it's alway a real joy to see this aircraft fly.
you know everyone argues which plane is the best. however, in the capable hands of any experienced fighter pilot being german, japanese, british, american, russian or otherwise, the factor comes down to who is more comfortable with their equipment and who is smarter.Btw the P-51 is the only known piston aircraft to have shot down a jet during WWII.
@tommyg2156 Not true, the Spitfire had a kill to its name and the P-47 had a "kill" that wasn't confirmed. many 262's went down... you shouldn't state things like that if you don't know for sure.
I have a customer who owns N51KB ("Ain't Misbehavin"). It is sitting down in our paint hangar. I have heard people talk about the differences between the RR Merlins and the Packard Merlins. Is there any obvious way to tell from the outside the aircraft which version of the Merlin this aircraft has? It is a P-51D, AAF sn 44-74009. Now, this may be a moot point anyway because I am fairly sure the engine, regardless of which Merlin it is, has been worked over by the folks at Roush Racing.
You must also remember some "Spitfires also had "Griffon Engines in them, on the later supermarine mark 5 spitfires and not "Merlin Engines. Merlin Engines were on the earlier models of "Spitfires. I read that one American quoted " in a P-51, i feel like a sitting duck because of lack of armour on the plane, this gave the P-51 better overall range over a "SPITFIRE, but the "SPITFIRE had BETTER ARMOUR BETTER GUNNS BETTER HEIGHT SPEED BETTER OVERALL SPEED ON NEW MODELS.
@kinkaid25 I believe the P51 may have had the edge on speed with like for like engines? it also had a better undercarriage and was easier to build than the Spit, so I think they are both fantastic aircraft. Why this US, UK rivalry that didn't exist when these planes were built and flown?
People sure like to get into the nationalism on here. Remember America is made up of people from all over the world who immigrated here. If you are an American you could also be of German or English decent. Who cares, just enjoy the aircraft.
Reference Robert Gruenhagen: "Mustang - the story of the P-51 Mustang". P-51 B,C,D,K, H all had Packard Merlin engines, due to license issued by British to U.S, to boost production quantities of the Merlin. The outcome was actually an improved engine. This is documented well in many publications, not just the one I mentioned. But, yes, kudos to the British for the wonderful Merlin from the start.
Please accept my apologies, I clicked the down thumb by mistake.
Anyway...The Merlin engine was great by design, The P51 was great by design. Put the two together and you get a fast aircraft, brilliant at sustaining high altitude over a fair distance.
We have a few over here and they are loved and cherished more than the Crown Jewels.
Apologies accepted, no problem. I agree, I sure enjoy the aircraft and have had the privilege to fly three of them. Glad you have some there too including Big Beautiful Doll, to enjoy. Thanks for your comments.
@fbenenati Beautiful Plane, I have a question, I am aware that Packard Merlins had American standard threads, but what were the improvements? I have never seen it in publications, please tell me where to find the info? As far as I am aware there was continuous and rapid improvement throughout the war partly by sharing information & experience, I am sure some ideas came from American use of this engine in the same way the lessons learned from spitfire helped develop the Mustang
@cannissolis Packard Improved the supercharger, bearings & coolant flow in the engines. which gave them greater longevity between overhauls . They made a lot of small changes which made it easier to manufacture in mass quantities. It was a win/win for RR which included a lot of the changes in the Merlins they made as well.
i thought the p-51 was famous for its english engine (rolls-royce merlin) & american design! (packerd V-1650 was a merlin produced under license in the usa)so i think the british earn the credit! but indeed great sound
According to Gen. Chuck Yeager's book, page 83, he says that the FW 190 is on a par with the mustang. He should know, he has flown both as a test pilot. Also flew many other WW II era fighters.
The p51D was slower than the 109k4 at all altitudes, had less acceleration across all speed bands and had a larger turning radius at speeds lower than 250MPH. These things are what people normally use to decide whether one fighter is better than another. However, the p51 granted its user better SA than any other non American aircraft, it was more ergonomically designed to combat pilot fatigue (it was luxurious compared to any 109).
it had more available control for maneuvering (could extend one notch of flaps at any speed for an extra boost of angles), had 6 highly accurate guns, was exceedingly stable (having no unpredictable or uncontrollable flight characteristics), was unbelievably nimble at speeds greater than 250MPH, had unprecedented range and its max dive speed was in near mach 1 (109 was unflyable at speeds in excess of 500MPH). It is these finer points that make the pony the best fighter of WWII.
the $385.00 ride is crap, it takes more than that to start one. I know I work on a B5N "Kate" Bomber replica out here in Atlanta Ga, and there are 8 WW2 planes out here and the P-51 is one of them. and the price for a ride is $1200 an hour, so maybe you paid $385 to sit in it.
The Mustang was just as capable as the Me109 and FW190 at any altitude. I believe the British Corsairs and Hellcats were more of a threat to Me109s and FW190s than the Mustang, but their encounters were to few to find documentation about. The P-47 was good initially, but was just as capable as the Mustang after they were fitted with the paddle propeller. The P-51 was an excellent dogfighter and it's combat record will attest to that.
If you are interested in Gen. Chuck Yeager's opinion of the Mustang compared with German and Japanese fighters, you may want to read pages 34 and 83 of his book "Yeager". You do make some good comments, though.
Common misconception. The high/low myth comes from characteristics of the early Mustangs or pre-merlin engine. Mustang B, C and D's all were capable dogfighters low and high. The fact is that the merlin engine Mustangs excelled up high. Down low is no problem for a good pilot. However, in aerial combat, down low is never the place to be.
Yes yes, Americans have the illusion they won WWII and thereby their planes were the best, sorry but that's just bias. German pilots scored most aerial kills in WWII, German engineers designed first fighter jet and constructed planes which were decades ahead of their time. Don't forget, without German engineering there wouldn't have been a man on the moon in 1969.
Don't forget that the German pilots were there at their "front" for the duration of the war. American pilots served one or more tours of a certain number of missions. That accounts for the high number of shoot downs for German pilots.
It was German rocket ace Werner Von Braun who developed the Saturn V rocket that enabled the American's to get the moon. Currently there are no rockets powerful enough to get to the moon again! They'll have to pull Von Braun's Saturn V rockets out of museums to get the job done!
Glad to see you make the point that it takes more than just a plane with superb performance. The person flying the plane can account for a huge difference sometimes in who wins a dogfight.
2 years ago i met a pilot that was on Macchi202 during the ww2.
He 'met' P38, P40, and P51, Spits, Hurricanes, but he reminds clearly the fear about the P47, expecially when he was assigned to patrol northern Italy against bombers.
Ok, P47 is hughly compared to P51, but was a nightmare for every enemy if in good hands.
Anyway P51 is sexy, is the best looking aircraft of WW2, no story. :D
Designed by German engineer Edgar Schmeud.Put your Kraut flag with the Ami when u wave. You hipocrits will now be confused and un certain. Boy i love the truth, like cold water.
The Pony is THE most beautiful aircraft in the world. The sound of the Merlin gives me goose-bumps every time. It is my dream to checkout in one of these beauties.
One thing the Mustang could do, that the Spit couldn't, nor any other allied aircraft, was escort bombers, from England, to Berlin, and back home. It wasn't the fastest, but the Pony had enough balls to fly, fight and come home.
* had enough balls to fly, fight and come home * - by balls you mean it was bigger than the spitfire and could carry more fuel - right? - Or do you mean it flew the same British designed Merlin engine as the Spitfire after the original American Alison power plant didn't have the *balls* to do the job?
Thats because it was designed to only escort bombers and do light bombing runs...........................the spitfire was designed to fight head to head with other aircraft, and recon
I stood next to one of these beauties at an airshow in ohio , The pilot said "want a ride ? " I said "how much ? " he said $385.00 dollars . Ca-ching , away I went . The most awesome ride I have ever been on . I can't believe this thing was not a jet !!!! The fastest prop airplane in the world .
In response to Greendude33. The Spitfire didn't 'only shoot down 109's''. It shot down everything the Luftwaffe could send up from 109's to 190's to He111's to Stuka's through to V1 flying bombs. Not just in Europe but in Russia, the Middle East and Africa. It also fought in the far east and shot down 100's of Japanese aircraft too.
Without the collaboration of The U.S and British govts this plane would never have been built. Who cares about which is best ? Without the P-51 the Allies would never have gained air superiority...and by the way The R.A.F used P-51's in large numbers too !
the spit was a great plane but the plane of the war was the P-51. it could go fast and keep up in a turn battle, it had the range the power. it was the total package. it could even shoot down the 262. i am not putting the spit down but the mustang has it beat in more then one way
the p51 had a better airframe and an improved version of the rolls royce merlin engine. the mustang was faster more agile had a longer range and even shot down me 262's now what were you saying about the spitfire? haha
All of which is matched by the Spitfire, when not purely opinion-based. After all, Merlins, being a British engine, were allocated to British aircraft in new marks first.
the p51 was over 100 mph faster than the spitfire and the p 51 had a revolutionary wing style. not to mention the supercharger on the mustangs engine that spitfire did not have. and the mustang was able to escort bombers to germany and back. the spitfire was a good but the mustang was great. look it up fact not opinion. p51 came into action later in the war and still shot down more enemy planes.
If you consider the Spitfire stuck at the Mark I, you're correct. You seem to have missed the later marks (which proceeded at a rapid pace), which outperformed all the Mustang variants.
ya the best spitfire vs the p51D mustang is no match. the mustang was better armored but yet faster, the mustang was more powerful but yet it could still fly longer. the spitfire's airframe was nothing compared to the p51's and the p51 shot down 190's 109's and even me 262's while the shitfire only shot down 109's. the p51 was requested by the british because the spitfire wasnt cutting it against the newer german planes.
you forget that the mustang was upgraded throughout its life. by the time the P51H came along, it was the fastest piston engine fighter of the war, faster than even the Griffon powered spitfires
Speed isn't everything. The P51H and the Spitfire XXIV had an identical power-to-weight ratio of 0.23 hp/lb, with the P51H having the speed edge (487mph vs 454mph). However, the Spitfire XXIV could gain altitude at 4,100 ft/min, whereas the P51H managed 3,300 ft/min, and even less with the external drop-tanks that gave the P51 the extra couple of hundred miles' range. In terms of armament, the Spitfire was greater: Four 20mm cannons and bombs, rather than just six .50 calibre machine guns.
What is undeniable, however, is that both the Spitfire and the Mustang were both extremely, extremely fine aircraft that contributed greatly to the Allied victory. They had their strengths in different areas (and statistics alone cannot tell you about manuverability and handling characteristics, which are what count in a dogfight). So I don't wish to 'put down' either aircraft - simply point out to those insisting that one or the other is 'the best' are missing the point.
SerenissimaRepublica, would you be so kind as to tell us what the combat record of the Spitfire is? I would like to compare it with the Mustang, please.
The heated air from the radiator coming out aft added about 5 mph more speed to the Mustang.
"Dutch" Kindleburger and his engineers at North American Aviation designed and built the plane in 117 days. They had to wait for the Allison V-1750 engine so the plane was complete in 120 days.
There was a twin fuselage twin engine plane based on the '51. It was the P-82 Twin Mustang. It used the Merlin engines and props but the twin fuselages were about 20-30 percent larger and also had cockpits and full controls for two pilots.
If you can find it on the internet look for Len Morgans book "200 Hours To Remember" and study the history of that plane. Another plane to study up on is Republic's P-47 Thunderbolt. It was tough as nails.
my dad's freind is really into planes and has a cd with a bunch of palin flybys and theres a P51 on it and he drove down the highway and blew his speakers out palying it over and over
It was an amazing plane for its time for just having the range to get over germany and was certainly no slouch in combat either. And please stop insulting each other about whats the best plane. Spitfires and mustangs were both brilliant. In a dogfight a very important thing was being able to turn inside your opponents arc so speed isnt everything.
Amazing !! Just Amazing !! BTW I wonder if the owners of these P-51s (or any war-birds) are allowed to have the functioning 50 cal guns in the wings!! Can they?? or do they ???
I am sure there is someone out there with a P-51 with full 6 .50 cal machine guns still working condition, doubt it'd be orignal from back in the late 40's but either way, P-51 is the best piston engine plane, didn't it shoot down some migs in Korea or Vietnam? I remember hearing that.
A nicely restored one like this is about 1.5 million or more. Cost per hour to fly, factoring all the overhead issues, is about a thousand dollars. Fuel burn when at advanced power is 60-80 gallons per hour.
Spitfire Mk.IX could win this anyday! you yanks think this is the best amd most famous plane of the war but the spitfire will always be the legend and dont forget it.
Are your serious??? P-51 would shit all over a little spitfire. P-51s could go twice as far as spitfires. Germans used to tear your bombers all the pieces because your little shitty spitfires couldn't fly with them all the way to Germany and back, unlike the P-51 which could provide protection for our bombers to and from.
Because of range it should ''shit'' all over ?? whos talking about range?? The spitfire Mk.IX was better then the mustang. Spitfires and me109s are the famous planes of the war not some plane that came late you twat.
The Mustang was only succesful after they put the Merlin engine which was in the Spitfire. The original Allison engine didn't have the power to perform.
However later models of the Spitfire adopted the Mustang's wing shape as it gave greater manouverability.
Also the Spitfire was never used to escort RAF bombers, it was too valuable to Fighter command to do that plus there weren't enough to do so. The RAF bombers mostly flew at night. I suggest you read up on your history more and not listen to biast comments that may distort the truth.
guys, they were both beautiful planes. Mustang may have been better performance-wise, but the Spitfire had a way more emotinal appeal to it. The Spitfire was loved by Britain, The mustang was loved by America. Let's not fight over this......
You're right... the two planes are icons of the WW II, both planes fought several battles in order to protect their nations from foreing invaders, and the most important reason, both planes were piloted by the bravests pilots in the world.
That's Awesome. Truely a legendary warbird. I have one that is a radio controlled airplane and love it. I wish I could fly the real deal. Nice job on the video. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Was lucky enough to get stick time in this beauty (The Miracle Maker) in Dec. of 1996. What a fabulous ride, and thanks to the pilot, Ike Enns, for making lotsa riders very happy people, and sharing this beautiful piece of aviation history with many others.
I got to fly in a p51 a couple years ago the only plane that excites me more is the p38 lighting martin caden has one if you read this martin plz i will pay big
It's funny how the Cobra was a Brit-American lovechild because it had a British chassis and an American engine, this plane is an exact opposite, American chassis mixed with a British Rolls Royce engine... go figure....
For example the Mustang's official code the P-51. Only the cool guys call this Mustang, because many different mustang exist: the ford mustang, the horse etc. But Everyone knows what means P-51. That I alking about. Give me the official code. Now u understand?

The fact is that the merlin engine Mustangs excelled up high. Down low is no problem for a good pilot. However, in aerial combat, down low is never the place to be.
HayateAce 2 years ago
Yes yes, Americans have the illusion they won WWII and thereby their planes were the best, sorry but that's just bias. German pilots scored most aerial kills in WWII, German engineers designed first fighter jet and constructed planes which were decades ahead of their time. Don't forget, without German engineering there wouldn't have been a man on the moon in 1969.
Makreel44 2 years ago
Don't forget that the German pilots were there at their "front" for the duration of the war. American pilots served one or more tours of a certain number of missions. That accounts for the high number of shoot downs for German pilots.
fbenenati 2 years ago

Ask seasoned pilots of the Luftwaffe if the P51 was a nightmare. NOT !!!!!

It wasn't the fastest, but the Pony had enough balls to fly, fight and come home.
urrybr 2 years ago
* had enough balls to fly, fight and come home * - by balls you mean it was bigger than the spitfire and could carry more fuel - right? - Or do you mean it flew the same British designed Merlin engine as the Spitfire after the original American Alison power plant didn't have the *balls* to do the job?
johndohhhh 2 years ago 2

It also fought in the far east and shot down 100's of Japanese aircraft too.
scotstrucker 2 years ago
Without the collaboration of The U.S and British govts this plane would never have been built. Who cares about which is best ? Without the P-51 the Allies would never have gained air superiority...and by the way The R.A.F used P-51's in large numbers too !

the spit was a great plane but the plane of the war was the P-51. it could go fast and keep up in a turn battle, it had the range the power. it was the total package. it could even shoot down the 262. i am not putting the spit down but the mustang has it beat in more then one way

Gosh, such a beautiful plane!
kretzer14 2 years ago
the p 51 by definition is the greatest prop fighter plane ever made.
Greendude33 2 years ago
The Spitfire begs to differ. :P
SerenissimaRepublica 2 years ago
the p51 had a better airframe and an improved version of the rolls royce merlin engine. the mustang was faster more agile had a longer range and even shot down me 262's now what were you saying about the spitfire? haha
Greendude33 2 years ago
All of which is matched by the Spitfire, when not purely opinion-based. After all, Merlins, being a British engine, were allocated to British aircraft in new marks first.
SerenissimaRepublica 2 years ago
the p51 was over 100 mph faster than the spitfire and the p 51 had a revolutionary wing style. not to mention the supercharger on the mustangs engine that spitfire did not have. and the mustang was able to escort bombers to germany and back. the spitfire was a good but the mustang was great. look it up fact not opinion. p51 came into action later in the war and still shot down more enemy planes.
Greendude33 2 years ago
If you consider the Spitfire stuck at the Mark I, you're correct. You seem to have missed the later marks (which proceeded at a rapid pace), which outperformed all the Mustang variants.
SerenissimaRepublica 2 years ago
ya the best spitfire vs the p51D mustang is no match. the mustang was better armored but yet faster, the mustang was more powerful but yet it could still fly longer. the spitfire's airframe was nothing compared to the p51's and the p51 shot down 190's 109's and even me 262's while the shitfire only shot down 109's. the p51 was requested by the british because the spitfire wasnt cutting it against the newer german planes.
Greendude33 2 years ago
you forget that the mustang was upgraded throughout its life. by the time the P51H came along, it was the fastest piston engine fighter of the war, faster than even the Griffon powered spitfires
maverick223 2 years ago
Speed isn't everything. The P51H and the Spitfire XXIV had an identical power-to-weight ratio of 0.23 hp/lb, with the P51H having the speed edge (487mph vs 454mph). However, the Spitfire XXIV could gain altitude at 4,100 ft/min, whereas the P51H managed 3,300 ft/min, and even less with the external drop-tanks that gave the P51 the extra couple of hundred miles' range. In terms of armament, the Spitfire was greater: Four 20mm cannons and bombs, rather than just six .50 calibre machine guns.
SerenissimaRepublica 2 years ago 2
What is undeniable, however, is that both the Spitfire and the Mustang were both extremely, extremely fine aircraft that contributed greatly to the Allied victory. They had their strengths in different areas (and statistics alone cannot tell you about manuverability and handling characteristics, which are what count in a dogfight). So I don't wish to 'put down' either aircraft - simply point out to those insisting that one or the other is 'the best' are missing the point.
SerenissimaRepublica 2 years ago 2
me 262s WERE shot down by p51s but no more then what they were been shot down by me109s and me262s, good plane otherwise.
zanzaFactory 2 years ago
SerenissimaRepublica, would you be so kind as to tell us what the combat record of the Spitfire is? I would like to compare it with the Mustang, please.
THUD086 2 years ago
Well, I'll jump in:
The Spitfire was a 1930's design with cloth control surfaces; it had little range because it was designed as an interceptor.
The P-51 was a wartime design and was always intended as a long range, all metal, escort.
Now which plane do you think could do more jobs in more roles? High altitude flying? Tank busting? Bombing? Tackling FW 190s and jets?
The Spit has a lot of fans due to its minority role in the Battle of Britain, but that doesn't arbitrarily make it "the best."

The heated air from the radiator coming out aft added about 5 mph more speed to the Mustang.
"Dutch" Kindleburger and his engineers at North American Aviation designed and built the plane in 117 days. They had to wait for the Allison V-1750 engine so the plane was complete in 120 days.
P51ride 2 years ago
There was a twin fuselage twin engine plane based on the '51. It was the P-82 Twin Mustang. It used the Merlin engines and props but the twin fuselages were about 20-30 percent larger and also had cockpits and full controls for two pilots.
If you can find it on the internet look for Len Morgans book "200 Hours To Remember" and study the history of that plane. Another plane to study up on is Republic's P-47 Thunderbolt. It was tough as nails.

Air intake for the radiator. You can see that the exit duct is open when he taxis back in toward the end of the clip.

the intake on the bottom of the aircraft was also used for the oil cooler, which is situated just befor the radiator!

When are you brits gonna get over measuring your dicks against ours? They were both great planes, get over it would you?
BiccusD 3 years ago 2
Are your serious??? P-51 would shit all over a little spitfire. P-51s could go twice as far as spitfires. Germans used to tear your bombers all the pieces because your little shitty spitfires couldn't fly with them all the way to Germany and back, unlike the P-51 which could provide protection for our bombers to and from.
NW1ABLitz 3 years ago
Because of range it should ''shit'' all over ?? whos talking about range?? The spitfire Mk.IX was better then the mustang. Spitfires and me109s are the famous planes of the war not some plane that came late you twat.
SirJamesofCyrodiil 3 years ago
The Mustang was only succesful after they put the Merlin engine which was in the Spitfire. The original Allison engine didn't have the power to perform.
However later models of the Spitfire adopted the Mustang's wing shape as it gave greater manouverability.
davidsan01 2 years ago
Also the Spitfire was never used to escort RAF bombers, it was too valuable to Fighter command to do that plus there weren't enough to do so. The RAF bombers mostly flew at night. I suggest you read up on your history more and not listen to biast comments that may distort the truth.
davidsan01 2 years ago 2
guys, they were both beautiful planes.
