@XxtreborobertxX I already watch it, wasn't the technical overview I hoped it would be. Still an amazing instrument that takes an even more amazing player to do it justice.
This is so beautiful, it didn't blow my mind, it gave me an experience best described as ounces of serotonin completely flooding my brain for 4 minutes and a half minutes..
I cannot understand the 81 morons that don't understand the genius involved in the piece. He couldn't get the harmonics he wanted to, so he did what any bassist would do (that's a joke, btw): he changed the tuning of his bass throughout the song and kept playing! Fricking amazing bassist!
@liveforthekill1 He changed the tuning to so many varying degrees, a hipshot would not work. I am still at a loss for words after listening and watching him play! I have played bass for over 25-years and do some pretty complicated techniques on a fretless bass, but this guys is amazing!
What I love about Michael Manring is how original he is. I mean, almost every rock bassist is riding off the accomplishments of another bassist that made advances in the instrument, but this is so goddamn original there's no way he couldn't of thought of all this himself.
i don't get it, how can you dislike this? Is it disliked through jealousy? thats the only reason i can see for it. Even if you don't like the music surely you can appreciate the talent...
@cursedswordsman it sounds smoother as it's on a fretless bass, he doesnt have to slide up or down to notes or release a note and fret it in another position. Also alot of the notes are harmonics that you can't usually move around, detuners allow him to do this. Due to the nature of the instrument the freted notes sound a bit twangy, if the whole song sounded twangy it wouldn't be the same, so there are bell like tones then the twangy parts over it and it fits so awesomely.
He doesn't retune the strings. It's a Zon Hyperbass. There are many levers next to the tuning pegs as well at the back of the body which allows him to relax or increase the tension of the strings without having to actually retune each string . And besides, you can never get a sound like this by just playing at the spots. The song would lose all of its character and he probably wouldn't be able to play it if he just fretted every note.
@whouston33wh thanks to your comment, i just noticed that behind the bass's tuning ears are some levers :) i also thought he was screwing with the tuning
The only person I've ever heard play with the same amount of originality and creativity is Jaco Pastorius. This is amazing, and pushes the limits of what bass playing can be. But then that's why Michael manrings' a legend :)
@Deusexmachinamusic i think that he studied with pastorius as his teacher.. im not sure but his love for harmonics confirms it a bit :) u can also check it out if u want
these passages are from page #17 of The Companions of Jehu written by Alexandre Dumas pere--"Sir, I have heard speak of the Companions of Jesus," replied the magistrate with his jeering smile. @Aghawa It's not a question of whether or not I can play better than him. My beef with Michael Manring is that his entire approach to music angles NOT on his compositional or improvisational skills. They're good, but not GREAT. They're OKAY, but listen to him play compositions by Metheny or Coltrane. He has chops, obviously, but his shit is stale and obviously doesn't come from the heart of a true jazz musician like Jaco Pastorius (who, I say again, did this better in '76).
@Aghawa And that whole "post a video response of yourself doing this" bullshit is so juvenile. Obviously I can't do this, but just because I can't do it doesn't mean I have to worship the guy. Jeez, you act like I just slapped your mom or something. I said the guy's playing is boring, which to me IT IS, because it's not as musical as it could be. It's diluted with filler. WOW SHOCK FACTOR bullshit. Jaco did it in '76.
Harmonically (is that what you meant?), I find this piece to a dead end.
@Aghawa Also what I find to be a dead end is his "technique" that you also seem to be drooling over. It's pretty cool, but (again) if you listen to him playing REAL jazz, it becomes a very limiting factor. He plays out of tune on straight ahead stuff, and obviously works out every little note BEFORE he performs it. This guy is NOT worthy of the Godly praise he seems to receive.
