What the hell? The ryu I always fight doesn't go this head on, he's always launching hadoukens and defending, and taking his chances sometimes, on hard though.
Gouken is the best in game! (For me) Setch is easy , on most harder i kill him using oguken , and on the end i have 1/2 life. Sry for my english. Im dont know english, im study it....
Gouken (as in play-style) specializes at taking out Hado-fighters such as Ryu, Ken and Akuma.
He does well against just about anyone, as his style is quite versatile... but damn, you need to be a complete failure to lose to a Hado-fighter with him.
Oh and even though Ken looks like a half-Jap mongrel with yellow hair and brown eyebrows but all in all he is much more handsome in looks than Ryu throughout the series save the 1987 debut.
Also, he hits more and is faster. Who of all of the Shotokan turtles has the fire uppercut? Not even Akuma and Gouken, much less, Allen, Kairi, Sean and Dan hahaha.

Ryu's dad (Akuma) tries to turn him into a demon so, his uncle (Gouken) shows up to protect his nephew from his brother (Akuma). Not unlike real life; whenever a brother is irresponsible, its always up to you, the older brother to take care of your nephews.
Gouken kicks ass. He's what I've always had in mind whenever I thought of the word "master." His ridiculous musculature is for symbolic purposes; it doesn't mean real masters are that buff.
In case anyone has not figured Gouken has the ability to pass through long range attacks such as hadoukens, sagats tiger shot, and even dhalisms yoga fire. Believe me I've done it but the trick is to not do it so soon
nope. ryu fights sagat, gouken fights ryu (obvious from this video)
ONLY way to fight gouken or akuma is to follow the requirements for fighting them (w/o losing any rounds and getting a certain amount of perfects, ultra finishes)
even though lets face it... this would make more sense (fighter in first position is the player):
ryu vs. ken/akuma/gouken
ken vs. ryu (rufus' rival is ken, not the other way around)
sagat vs. ryu (clearly)
akuma vs. gouken
gouken vs. ryu
i think having only one rival battle didnt do the game justice..the last 2 or 3 battles before seth should of been some sort of story battles... like ryu vs. ken, then ryu vs. akuma... with the 'bouns battle' being the ultimate story ending ie: ryu vs. gouken
i'd agree with that. the next installment has to have more rival matches. 3 would be ideal. one when you first start, one midboss, and one just before the final boss. and have seth come in as a rival for, say, bison.
Yeah right stardingo (fits you perfectly). Ken was never designed to be an American character despite having gold hair (everyone: fantasy Jap characters in anime with colourful hair was already very common from the 80s). His red gi, and Ryu's white gi, are the colours of the flag of Japan and the yellow hair was to make him look different.
His name was Japanese for 'fist'. After people linked him to Ken Masters blah blah Capcom quietly dropped his Japanese name.
I owned Street Fighter III double impact, and Street Fighter III third strike on the Dreamcast way back when; in the manual I believe it says that the "true rising dragon" (SF III Ryu's, and Gouken's "shin sho ryu ken") can only be executed by a master of ansatsuken. If you are not a master, you can't do that move. Sorry for overposting; I just felt compelled to inform all Ryu fans, that the character has come full circle!
That's right Ryu fans; as of SF IV, far as the Street Fighter timeline and story are concerned, Ryu is a master of ansatsuken, that is why he's as powerful a character as he is in this one, and even more powerful in SF III. Once again, according to very old Japanese tradition, if your master challenges you, it is considered a great honor, a praise for your skills. That's probably where that "rival" stuff comes from in Gouken's game.
In other words yes, this fight is important to the SF III plot; while not a master on the same level as Gouken, at this point in Ryu's martial arts career, he has become a master. By the time SF III rolls along, Ryu has conquered "Evil Ryu" and become a full fledged master of ansatsuken, the fictional martial art they practice. The reason Ryu is not the main character in SF III, is because as a full fledged master he can no longer be heroic.
The reason Ryu is Gouken's "rival," has to do with a silly old Japanese martial arts convention; in some martial arts schools (Kenjutsu) of days past in Japan, if a master challenged you, it meant you had become a master yourself. Normally, the master of a school does not fight any of his students, because his skills are too far above theirs. In other words to be challenged by the master was considered an honor and it meant that you yourself had become a master.
actually, I fought him just a few minutes ago (Zangief) using Gouken, just before fighting Ryu. It was the worst massacre you've ever seen; poor Zangief never had a chance. I have a much harder time with the quicker characters though, like Cammy.
No because Akuma and Gouken must be fought via certain conditions in which you fight them after Seth, of course they have their own rivals though, Akuma and Gouken Rivals Ryu because of whats inside him.
Akuma, Blanka, El Furerte, and Dan, although Dan is suppose to be a Ham so he gets a pass. Actually I like Goukens Voice. Some of the voices for Japanes in my opinion sound bad.
What the hell? The ryu I always fight doesn't go this head on, he's always launching hadoukens and defending, and taking his chances sometimes, on hard though.

Sorry Ken Master's fans; apparently the Japanese SF IV developers don't have too high an opinion of American martial artists.
stardingo747 2 years ago
I think you might be forgetting who the REAL MAIN CHARACTER of the game is.

Abel? Oh yeah they have a high opinion of his determination, but not his skill. I'll admit though Abel is a fun character to play as.
