At this very moment - your 1964 Kennedy Halves are worth $10.63 a piece. Your silver dimes are $2.13 each. Your silver Eagle is $29.38 which is the current actual spot price, however, to buy one with a coin dealer most likely will run a few dollars over spot in the vacinity of $32 or $33. It was hard to see your 1909 S Barber Halve - what grade is it in? I'm a numismatist - I've been so since roughly 1987 when I was like 9. I would go to even such lengths as checking coins in wishing wells.
@Coins4Cheese It is good that you know your coins (born in '96 making you age 14) already. The coin market is a very hot market right now because of soaring metal prices and demand. I started collecting in '82 when I was 12-13 years age, 41 now. I see you too collect nickels before 1960. I have been doing for 28 years and now gotten about $150 face value. That's right $150 face in pre1960 five cents pieces and have found rare and very old ones, mostly from slot machines from the casinos.
To my knowledge, the coin abuse laws only ever applied to specie. Nickel and Copper are not specie metals.
That's why, for the longest time, you could find brutally distorted cents as 'gag' gifts at curio shops. You'd never find silver dimes treated that way.
Anyhow, if necessary, the coins would be shipped out of the US and melted, because of the bargain.
@staydput I am unsure if it is law, but congress passed an act making it illegal to melt down nickles or pennies for their metal value. Of course if we have to change our currency due to inflation this law will not apply.
dude i live in west virginia and i collect coins the same way u do. always buy the pennies...... i pulled a 1914 d out of a roll. and if u can find halves in rolls BUY THEM!!!!!!!! i've about got the whole set of them from buying rools, yeah they r expensive, but dont go balls to the wall. and always look around in there i've found 4 morgan dollars at my bank, and they always call me when they have some in. its the best way to collect coins and pawn shops!!!! look there also
why not melt copper? As pennies, they are indistinguishable from pennies. Noone will care that they are worth 2 cents each instead of one. BUT melted down into RAW copper, by the pound they will be worth more. A lot of people dont even care that old silver is really made of silver... until you tell them. At least if its in another form it will be able to be bartered with in larger units. I would rather have a one pound copper bar and just trade it for silver coin or sell it for cash...
It's illegal to melt them, yes. But, you can sell them on ebay for a little bit over face value. I'm holding on to them because when copper prices rise, I'll make some money.
There is also legislation in the works (again) to switch US coinage composition, including a proposal to mint cents in steel. If that happens, copper cents will become even more valuable, and even the zinc ones will command a premium over time. =^[.]^=
The US already minted steel pennies once, in 1943. There's also consideration of steel nickels.
Google: "Coin Composition Changes Proposed Yet Again, but Now in Obamas Budget"
Smaller denomination coins evolved in a time when money was actually worth something, and relatively stable in value. Once the inflationary march started, we had to abandon gold in circulation, then silver in circulation, then the gold backing for the dollar. Copper and nickel are next. ='[.]'=
hey where do u get those big white squares that have the coins in them? and the big plastic rolls?,man how old are u?and how do u identify a copper penny?????????
Whoa, whoa, slow down there! Ok, I'm 13 years old. Those big white squares are called 2x2 coin flips. They come in a denominations. Type in "Wizard coin supply" in google, and go to the site. Same for the big plastic rolls. A copper penny is before 1983. In 1982, they made copper pennies and zinc pennies. So anything before 1982 is sure to be a coppper penny.
Nice finds! This month has been a slow month. I've only found I think 2 pre-1960's. But one of them filled a hole in my book. (It was a 1957 no mint-mark with some steps showing.)
Well, yeah, don't you save buffalos and V nickels? Lol, just messing with you. I think you mean pre-1960 Jeffersons, right? Well, I don't know why I really save them. They're just cool to keep, and someday they might be worth more than 5 cents. But if not, I'll just return them to the bank and get my money back.
I've always kept pre-1960 Jefferson nickels, too... Just a habit, I suppose. Back when I was a kid, the '50s seemed positively prehistoric, so I just started accumulating pretty much any coins from that time on back (and later silver issues, of course). =^[.]^=
Ahhhh, funny that you mention that! On December 1, 2009, I found my first buffalo nickel! The date was worn slick, but I could tell it was a 1913 Type one because of the raised mound on the back. Also, it was made in the San Francisco mint. It's worth about $17. Not bad for a coin that I only paid 5 cents for :)
The oldest coin that I've found in bank rolls so far is the buffalo nickel. But I'm hoping for some older ones soon.
Yeah, I collect 2009 pennies. They're probably not going to be worth much in the near future. But, you should be collecting 2009 nickels and dimes. They go for about $2 a peice on ebay.
Well, it's because so few of them were minted. I think only about 30 million of each were minted. That may sound like a lot, but compared to the population of 300 million in the US, not everyone can have one. Look up "2009 dime" or "2009 nickel" on ebay, and they're selling pretty high.
Back when the new 2009 pennies came out, people were selling boxes (2,500 2009 pennies) of them for about $300!
Awesome! I average about 5 per-box. The wheat count is also way lower here than in the states. I'm laying off the pennies for a while, because I like to search nickels. Yesterday, I found a 1913-S type one Buffalo nickel! The date was worn slick, but you could tell it was a 1913 type one because of the raised mound. It's worth about $10-$15, evan with the date slick!
thats a very good find lol. yeah the wheat count here is pretty unpredictable. in my first box i opened i only got 18, in my second box i opened, a week later, i got 57. so yeah i also collect copper pennies i have about 60 rolls as of now
Awesome! I think I should tell you about a site that talks about searching through bank rolls. Type in Coin roll hunting into google. I'll PM you the site.
This also reminds me of myself when I was young and my Grandpa showed me my first wheat cent and said, "These are what you want to find." Now I'm obsessed with 'em. Very nice collection, Cheese. Keep up the hard work...
I've also found silver dimes in a Coinstar machine and a Pepsi vending machine. I didn't think there were still silver coins in circulation. From time to time I find wheat pennies in my change.
Well, my dad wont let me watch a lot of kill bill, so I saw some parts of kill bill on and two. Like the time when she was burried in a box, and she punched her way out of it. That was awesome!
I was totally like you when i was your age! Going to the bank every day for coin hunting!! It's wise to start accumulating copper since it's still cheap!!
I rated 5 stars and also Subscribed!
Keep up the great work! You'll be surprise in 10 years how much you have collected!
Thanks for the site! I havn't done much coin hunting for the past couple years, I've been more bull on the bullions such as Canadian maples, and generic 99.99% silvers rounds, I made a few video if you got time you can check it out!
Very cool vids. I mainly don't collect bullion, but coins that have numistmatic (coins collector) value. But I do have an American eagle and 3 1964 half dollars, like I showed in the vid.
Numistmatic was my original intention when i started collecting. After realizing the market and the economy it's just more ideal for to lean towards the precious metals bullions. I do still collect the olds stuff from spare changes i get.
I'll make a video or two later in the week on my collections i found from CRH :D
Man, it's spooky how much like you guys I used to be! I even used to live in Honolulu like C4C! Yeah, I loved collecting coins. Kinda got away from it, but still have my collection. Never stopped sorting and examining change, and accumulating pennies (copper ones, anyway). Now I'm more into bullion, but I still enjoy the rarities, and even more the history of old coins and currency. Great vid, 5 stars! =^[.]^=
Actually thinking about it, it's not really that spooky :D after all it is this what brought us all together on the internet :D
I'm actually collecting all canadian dimes and quarters prior 1999 for it's 100% nickel content, since nickel and copper will be the next gold and silver rush! if not i can always throw it back in my bank later on :D
do you know about coin roll hunting in canada, i live in canada too!!!!!(just moved about an year ago!!) pls tell me i am dying to find silver and rare coins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah I live in Canada, The best Bank for Coin Roll Hunting is CIBC, just exchange a few rolls of each domination at CIBC look through them and then deposite it in your bank you do banking with. Just continue this process.
CIBC tends to reuse the coins deposited by customers. Other banks such as TD, Scotia and RBC they get Brand new coins .
im from surrey,bc..... do i need an account in CIBC??? and what coins should i search????? quarters, dimes, nickels, or pennies????, im looking for silver so should i go for quarters, or dimes?????? and im looking for old and rare coins!!!!! what should i collect? im also collecting the canadian olympic coins and i guess im half way there!! pls tell me more info!!!!! where in canada are you from????
I'm From Toronto, Well for CIBC you should be able to get rolls of coins without being a client/customer. I strongly recommend you get Quarters and Dimes for Silver and Rare Coins i would stick with Rolls of Pennies. I've been through Several Hundrends Rolls of Coins Pennies, Nickels, Dimes and Quarters.
Silver Quarters and Dimes are Prior 1967Pennies anything before 1964 I keep, Beware a 1921-1924 Penny is worth about $25 (I found 2 so far during my Coin Roll Hunting)
As of Nickel, I strongly recommend you just keep all the ones that are Prior 1996 since their made of 100% Nickel, and the "MELT VALUE" is actually worth more than the face value. so that's a bonus.. i mean just toss them in a peanut butter Jar and you'll be surprise how much you've accumulated.
Quarters and Dimes, Again anything before 1967 is consider Junk Silver, and if your lucky you get a numismatic coin (being a rare coin... it'll be worth much more than you think.
Your very welcome! That's what i did when i was your age, well i started a little younger than you, but you'll be really surprise how much you'll be accumulating over the years. Good luck coin roll hunting! There are Many rare coins yet to be discover by those who has a passion in coins like you :D.

Well, once a week, I go to the bank, and pick up some coins. They ran out of pennies, short supply over seas. I'll have new pennies to search through once this year is done. I'm stuck with nickels. Well, on the 17'th, I looked through $50 in pennies, and found 1,100 copper ones, 15 wheaties, but I gave 3 to my friends, 2 2009 pennies, and in the wheaties, the olest one I found was a 1937 and a 1937-S.

Hope this helps, Where about canada are you from?
