Either one of the clauses can stand on their own therefore they are not "dependent" on one another. There is indeed a comma between the two clauses. Did you not take Composition Rhetoric in college? I'm positive. This is well documented. I wrote a term paper on this. He figured it out before the Americans, according to his notes and his colleague's accounts how his behavior. He would purposefully lie about how much weight of Uranium he would need to delay the Nazis. He knew, like many Germans, what kind of man Hitler was and Nazi Germany having the bomb would have been a disaster.

Do the research. Go to a university library and take a look primary sources detailing Heisenberg's personal notes and accounts from his colleagues working on the German project. He figured it out before the Americans and deliberately delayed the project. I can't do the work for you.
