Earlier the issue of Bengali identity had split Pakistan. This song is post-1971 and was a welcome change from the previous pseudo-National viewpoint. Ethnic identities must be recognized.

As a Muhajir myself I respectfully disagree. Muhajirs have no single ethnic identity. They could be from UP, Bihar, Hyderabad (Deccan) etc. Muhajirs have little inclination to join the armed forces so the "pride" in Pakistan if any is not reflected.We must consider Pakistan as more than an economic opportunity. Juggling Baluchi domicile medical seat quotas to the advantage of a few is not a good practice.

In the 50s and 60s Muhajirs (I call them Pakistanis of Indian Origin or PIOs) did opt for the armed forces officers corps and the previous COAS was a representative of that era. The ordinary PIO (say from Orangi) does not sign up at a recruitment rally for the "paltan" or the common infantrymen.The only time this happened was in erst-while East-Pakistan (Bangladesh) where "Biharis" joined the Ansar and Mujahid battalions. Nowadays every PIO wants to be OUT of Pakistan, as fast as possible.

Umair, Look at it this way. Immigrant Pakistanis of Indian origin can be all encompassing; acceptable to all other groups. By de-emphasizing their ethnic origins they could serve a role model to other groups. They could be the glue welding Pakistan into a single national identity.
