@vckvicki the reason why he is sitting on the tiger skin is great rishis and sanyasis when they meditate they sit on a tiger skin so that the power gained through meditation does not go to the earth due to gravitational pull.I have been practising meditation for more than a decade.

Yes it is Tiger skin. In Those days skin is peeled off from dead Tiger and Deers. The Aachara dictates some niyamas to Acharyas. The niyama that while sitting for meditation, energy shouldn't be transferred to Earth a bad conductor of energy is used like that of hay grass, dead animal skins.

No living animal was harmed to peel off the skin :)
