Scene and go to heaven led this last scene, the children, "ツィゴイネルワイゼン(Zigeunerweisen)" is the last great Japanese movie is reminiscent of the (directed by Seijun Suzuki).
It always makes me wonder what delusions might have manifested if it was one of us dying in that makeshift emergency care room, instead of Jacob. Like, what nightmares or dreams might we imagine in our final moments. It's rather chilling and exquisite.
so heaven's made up of faggot angels that just can't kill people? what would be the difference between death and glory with those automatic egos who just want to be heroes? i mean peace is peace, right? death is peace. just kill em! but they can't. talk about attachment! are we going on the basis that the soul is immortal and has to reach a "goal"? cause that's total bullshit. there are no angels or goals and the demons run the world. this movie is a mind fucking lie about how the world works.
I watched this when it was released... and must have watched it a hundred times since.. but this still makes me all watery eyed.
For every thousand turds the US film industry pumps out they, very, very occasionally let a stunning piece of film like this crawl into the light. Every Hollywood producer/executive and director should be sat down on day one of 'film school' and made to watch this....
In my humble opinion this is the best film of the last 30 years...
I would love to know why Macaulay Culkin is uncredited in this film. It's such a glaring "oversight." Was this some sort of political attack against his father? Macaulay is lovely, as usual. Wish someone would write something great for him now.
like going through a divorce you didnt want, stepping back into your home of many years to gather up the last of your things, being told that you dont belong there any more and you are never coming back
One of the best films of the 80s. DIrected by brit Adrian Lynne, who was part of a flood of UK directors into the US, it stands out as one of the major films of that era. Will always be tops in my books.
Always reminds me of how LOST ended..... Pretty much the same thing with the father walking into a light with his son and then him smiling as he dies.... :)
When I first saw this movie, it was one of the few 5 star movies I had ever seen. Unfortunately a lot of newer movies have stolen the ideas from Jacob's Ladder, and many people will see those before they see this one. When people review it, they say 'Oh that was done in another movie', but really this was the original. The Matric, Fight Club, Inception, etc are all derived from Jacob's Ladder.
This Film has never failed to move me espicially the ending with Gabe holding Jacobs hand as he ascends to the afterworld. I think this film chimes with certain people and their view of life and death.
When jacob heard the music box playing , and walked into the next room to find his little boy looking up at him smiling and saying hi dad , i totally lost it . Tears were runing down my face like a water fall. The reason why that scene had such a profound impact on me was because I Lost a child, she was only five years old. And i was never the same again. I hope i see ya soon, LOVE DADDY.
So i just watched this tonight for the first time so was he in purgatory the whole time or was it the "ladder drug" which caused him to see hallucinations into his future as he was dying?
@manhuntAC He was in purgatory. The movie leads you to think it's all drug related. It's based on The Tibetan Book of the Dead (according to the screenwriter) and the horrifying visions people can have when they die if they are "trapped" by the memories and emotional attachments of the life they are leaving.
I will never forget the tremendous impact this final scene made on me the first time I saw this movie. It inspires one to believe in the best ending possible, regardless of the dark voyage you has endured.
"It's okay..." Gabe says to Jacob. And they disappear into the light.
@rr7firefly1 Yes I could not agree with you more, i was also very moved..to tears by this ending. A man finally at peace greeted by his long dead son and taken into the beyond. This concept is what we all fear, is there anything beyond death and will our loved ones be these to guide us..I truly hope so
@rr7firefly1 twenty, twenty five years after I saw this film for the first time I keep on believin' this is awsome… yep, you're right. One of the finest ending to a script. The music score by itself brought me to tears… it's so emotional.
この最後のシーン、子供に導かれて天国に行くシーンは、日本の映画「ツィゴイネルワイゼン」(鈴木清順監督)を彷彿とさせる素晴らしいラストです。

So few films now-a-days give the feeling of warmth in your heart.
The whole film, I was trying to figure out just what the hell I was watching, but it all got to me.
This is one of those movies you feel rather than understand, so forgive me that's I can't verbalize it well......

So the whole time Jacob was going through this he was actually a mortally wounded soldier still in the 60's dying on the medical table?

@rr7firefly1 :
YES,
The Gabe (Macaulay Culkin) have really make the film to a history and classic !
it's only a small confirmation of Macaulay Culkin's talent,...
the great thing is that how he told it,... - no any false in voice... nothing else as LOVE ONLY
