  • @TheMatadrum Of course there is more drummers who are great drummers - Keith Moon, Neil Peart, Dave Weckl, John Blackwell, Mike Mangini, Jeff Porcaro, Terry Bozio, Ginger Baker and the rest of the list is very long ...

  • Aren't we lucky to have a drummer as wonderful and as tallented as Gavin is, to entertain us and teach us with all his experience and knowledge of playing drums on youtube. Simply amazing!

  • love the bass drum so much

  • whats that last song called? is it porcupine tree?

  • @bea5ToloG The Sound of Muzak, from Porcupine Tree's "In Absentia" album.

  • Undisputed, got to be top 5 in the world.

  • "I like to smooth out, a lot of our tempos, so people can enjoy them. You know, I don't need the audience to know that this song is an 11/8 or 17/16. I don't want people to perceive that we 're just being cocky and clever... (Hey look, we can play notes in 16, check this out)... I wanna have some musical reason.!!" GREAT WORDS of a great musician. The musical world gone mad on techniques and play styles but we forgot the most important, Harmony in Music. Sorry for my crappy English.

  • This guy is the best to come along since Simon Phillips...and they both have it all: killer chops, ability to groove in ANY time signature, great-sounding drums...and above all, restraint when needed ( this last may well be the most elusive quality ).

  • LOL at "MD fest MASHUP"

  • Agreed.I find the comparing drummer A to drummer B boring.Gavin in my opinion is an extremely good creative and smart drummer, but I'm not going to go off saying he's the best that ever lived.I would say he's one of my favorites, especially in this genre, but I'm also into wine, and even though I like French Burgundy, doesn't mean I can't appreciate a nice Rioja.

  • all music has reasoning in one form or another..

  • Even though Gavin is very technical he still retains a very musical approach that's why I love his playing PLUS he has a great attitude - many other drummers on here if nothing else take note of that,it may help you secure more work.....

  • great snare

  • How can he get such a low, punchy sound out of such a small snare drum?

  • You know, I don't really like all the comparisons .

In my opinion, Gavin is an awesome drummer - not because his fast or groovy drumming, but because his great creativity and his feeling .

That's why I like Mike Portnoy, Gavin Harrison or even John Bonham more then other drummers, such as death/ black (and other fast-metal drumming genres) - because they are geniuses, talented and creative .

  • @JBStyleil AND Martin Axenrot... Listen to Opeth's new album Heritage and you'll see what I'm talking about. :)

  • @Americant47 Well said. It seems as though "favorite" and "best" have come to mean the same thing. To determine who's best at something is pretty subjective sometimes (unless you're talking Usain Bolt in the 100 meter dash). How do you determine the best tuba player or violin player? Maybe take the most difficult piece of music there is and see who can play it the best? The judges might interpret this differently as well. Drumming is cloudier yet. Hell, Ringo can be the best if ya want!

  • Dam Ricky Gervais is not only hilarious but also a beast on the kit! :O

  • I agree with you both , soundmind & america47...everyone has a unique talent for something which makes him "special" ..but not all the talent together..that is impossible..and would be so boring...to listen the same in every musician..jaja So stop arguing about who is the best(drummer , bassist, etc) and begin enjoying the music...for those people who still do not concentrate in things that really matter!!

    Flavy from Argentina

  • Amazing job! Brazilian drummers want Gavin Harrison's workshops here in Brazil.

  • Genius* Intelligent*Amazing....and adorable!!!

  • Also, 2:48 = Bleed by Meshuggah

  • 2:30 - 2:34

What the fuck am I looking at?

  • @MrFood11 I think it's just singles. Group of 4 bass drum, two singles on the tom, one single on snare and one single on the china. I think he goes into his 7-stroke rolls after that, in some kind of variation. I'd like to know what goes on at 2:41 with the tom "leaning" into the snare twice...

  • is the crash above his snare an oriental crash of doom?

  • @drumswhilegolfing101 I think so indeed

  • And people think Joey Jordison and Travis Barker are the best drummers lol.

  • @THEYahamaDrummer aren't they?

    haha just kidding

  • @THEYahamaDrummer that's there upinion and this is yours.

  • @THEYahamaDrummer joey Jordison and Travis Barker are far far from best drummers if you compare them with guys as Gavin. Nice comment dude. You absolutely got it.

  • @THEYahamaDrummer All the children!

  • @THEYahamaDrummer more cake for us ;)

  • @THEYahamaDrummer Thats really comparing such different genres and drumming styles...travis barker and joey are both great drummers in their bands and otherwsie...just like Gavin is a god within PT and all his other projects in the Prog and jazz world

  • Gavin is an extremely talented beautiful player. Such great groove, feel and taste.

His sense of rudiments is outstanding as well.

  • those toms sound fucking awesome.

  • @mattman20132 Agreed man. What beautiful fucking toms.

  • @Americant47 I applaud you for what you said. Well done bro! God people can be so ignorant.

  • I love his drumming, but even if he'd suck... his accent is just AWESOME :D

  • I used to love Portnoy, but after this guy.. there's no way.

  • @DeepAbsentia there is no reason to love both because they're both great drummers but I have to admit I prefer Gavin myself.

  • Drums sound amazing.

  • gavin harrioson = D.O.T.Y (drummer of the year)

  • What awesome parents! Must have been raised so well. It's evident in his drumming.

  • Sir id love to be you....after the top gear yotu might be one of the only brit peersct i still respect

  • @Americant47 Vinne Colaiuta wold have written that better LOL

  • 2:51 - 3:11 This is one of the wisest things I've ever heard any drummer said, and I hope that more drummers (or musicians for that matter) etch these words into their brains and understand that music, at the end of the day, is NOT ALL ABOUT TECHNICAL ABILITY, but about the MUSIC ITSELF! Don't get me wrong, I love and appreciate technique to no end, but I feel as though many people just don't seem to place an emphasis on musicality anymore.

  • all of his drums are so tiny haha

  • @bounty2444 theyre 8,10,12,15,16 with a 13 birch snare and 12 or 10 maple/steel side snare

  • @JaskaJunior nope its a 12 inch snare according to MD

  • i respect this guy

  • one of the best out there

  • what is that left crash cymbal?

  • @Luce1303 zildjian oriental crash of doom, i think 20"

  • @allmetaliswelcome thanks, it sounds awesome!

  • @Luce1303 oh by the way, it's an 18"

  • @allmetaliswelcome thanks again! :)

  • that drum kit sounds as good as hearing a girl tell you to stick in her butthole

  • what's the first song?

  • Great feet very clean

  • I can relate to Gavin when he talks about his mum not bothering about the drumming in the next room, I'm so grateful that my neighbours, let alone my parents actually support my playing!

  • SO ABSOLOUTLEY AMAZING my drum teacher says i could be bas good as him when im older :)

  • @speckytom Is the session pro DD505's kick pad big enough for a double bass pedal?

  • @Denyernator hrrm it can just fit in two .

  • can't believe the vile insults be traded here! all of you fuckin' grow up! if you like the music fine, if you don't that's fine also..there's no need to insult someone because they prefer one drummer over another...pathetic

  • what is the first song please?

  • this is neil pearts favorite drummer he talks highly of gavin

  • there's one bad thng about this video and that's just a further confirmation in my opinion that Sonor is just the best damn sounding thing on the planet. There was a used one at a local Sam Ash store here in CT and man just tapped the the thing but the depth of sound and the resonance was just another level

  • Most musical

    drummer ever!

  • been a big Niel Peart/Rush fan for years and never allowed any other drummer in my head till Gavin. truly a Monster Drummer. a master inovator. Im a big Fan of Gavin and Porcupine Tree. Fan for life.

  • @gotmonkeyfinger pretty typical of a neil peart fan. thats pretty narrow minded thinking. you cant focus on only one drummer and say hes the best. thats retarded. there are a broad spectrum of drummers that are amazing, like Gavin who are just as good in their own way. i was never a huge Rush fan. i like a few of their songs. everyone has their own opnions and your opinion seems to be based on a limited amount of info. there are a ton of drummers more impressive to me than Neil.

  • @soundmind529 your just one of those people who read somthing and understand another. I complimented Gavin and I have a wide range of understanding of drummers. I have photos wher Im standing and shaking hands with Dennis Chambers, Dave weckle and Marcello Pantano. Niel is so much more than a great drummer, he is an AMAZING song writer and lyrisist, so no need to put him down or insult me. Rush influnced great bands such as PT and Dream theater to name a couple.there is no Best. Gavin Rocks.

  • @soundmind529 also, yea Im a Neil/Rush fan and thats what it meens to be a fan, you just love them. you on the other hand are a trouble maker.

  • @gotmonkeyfinger if being narrow minded and unenlightened is a sign of being a "fan" than good luck finding your way out of those woods, brother. you can be a fan without creating the illusion that your opinion holds authority over others. i like a wide range of different drummers, for many different reasons and i despise people who say "hes the best" in accordance with musical ability. it is far too vast to be measured in such a way, which is indeed a result of narrow minded thinking.

  • @soundmind529 there you go again, you know what? I bet Im a better drummer than you. yea I said better. shut the F up. Gavin is a Monster drummer, I happen to like Neil Peart better. I Love Porcupine Tree, but I love Rush a little better. get it smart ass? I love you on line trouble makers. Neil basher. he is the best drummer in the woeld ya know? better than gavin..... yea, Gavin blows Niel before every show and thanks him when Neil jizzes all over Gavins face, and calls Neil master. lol

  • @gotmonkeyfinger whatever helps you sleep at night, fag. let me know when you get as far as i did in the GC drum off, then you can trash talk. by the way, your band sucks. they might sound a little better if you werent playing on such a piece of shit drum kit. i guess thats all you can afford when you pump gas for a living.

  • @soundmind529 lets see it you fucking coward!!! big fucking words on the internet. my playing is up for anyone to see and for you to go and post trash on. lets see your playing and lets see you sing as I do while your playing you penny blowjob!

  • @gotmonkeyfinger again, i dont have to prove anything to such a fucking fag. i know im better than you. do you even know what a drum off is? its one of the largest competitions in the world for drummers? how far did you get? nowhere cuz youre too busy trying to prove shit to people on youtube rather than doing something productive. have fun playing with your shitty little band. im going to go work on my education so i dont have to be a janitor like you, fuck face.

  • @soundmind529 A dog that barks a lot, don’t bite, and you are a barking fool. Calling me ( a father of 7) a fag at every exchange says a lot about your personal insecurities. Also saying you don’t have to prove anything is also a classic tail between your legs move. That’s ok, I love my little shitty band, your better than me. good luck. Neil Peart is the greatest of all time! To me. How you started with me proves one thing to me( Mr. Don’t have to prove). You are an asshole. Janitor, lol.

  • @fendergibs I do know Neil is the best, I dont that anyone in the worl can be called the best, and I know that there are drummers on a higher level than Niel but can a guy have a favorite? I love Neil for being a great drummer, wrighter and I love the band he plays with, and now I have been exposed to Gavin,,,,WOW! Rock on brother!!

  • @gotmonkeyfinger cool , check out "bozzio solo us drag" on you tube from the 1983 Us show when he was with missing persons.

  • @soundmind529 No way there are a ton more impressive than Neil, If you prefer other drummers, fine, but there aren't many in his class.

  • Comment removed

  • @nodrush80 thats subjective, and your attempt to direct the argument in your favor is yet another trait in Neil Peart fans, who like to fantasize that his skills can not be matched. wrong again. his playing is great, respectively and i find his drumming to be rather scripted. i have seen many drummers who in fact are more impressive. there is no "class" distinction in drumming. it creates an elitist ideal in music, which is disrespectful to the craft itself. it is a matter of personal taste.

  • @soundmind529 There's no argument, your disrespect for Neil's skills is a typical trait in Peart haters. He is the least scripted most original drummer out there. You are the one trying to create a class distinction by saying that he's pretty ordinary. It is a matter of taste, don't belittle his greatness just because you don't like rush. I love Gavin's drumming, and I won't attack his playing, although I could, that would be disrespectful.

  • @nodrush80 go back and read the posts again you fucking retard. i never attempted to create ANY class distinction, only that i like one drummer more than another. YOU were the one who actually used the word "class." i like neil peart, just not as much as gavin harrison. maybe you missed that? i never belittled his greatness, i only expressed my opinion. i like a few rush songs, and neil is great. all of which was posted on this page. FAIL. try again.

  • @soundmind529 Yeah you did Peart hater, your hatred for Peart is based on jealousy, you no talent loser. At least stick to your guns, you don't like Rush, so what. I love both bands, but no one comes close to Rush!

  • @nodrush80 done arguing with you. i like peart, just not as much as you. probably because your level of love for him is the reason you make a living being his own personal cock sucker, fag.

  • @soundmind529 Ha ha, how can someone so dumb like PT? You're the one talking about cock sucking, a little sensitive in that area aren't you? Wonder who's cock you're sucking. Long live king Neil!

  • You've sponged very well, Gavin! @1:30

  • That snare is damn sexy.

  • My favourite drummer.. He's incredible, musical, original. Not just beating- lauder, faster, harder, but with sense, tact and subtlety. I love him ;)

  • what ride is he using there?

  • @Drummerboy2401 20" K Ride

  • Wow. He was a very privileged child! But hey, he's one of my favorite drummers. And probably kicks more ass than every other drummer in this class.

  • wow his feet mimic each other

  • Vive Porcupine Tree

  • I love that double bass at about 2;50!

  • no kit sounds that perfect!!! its the holy kit of awesomeness and perfection!

  • Damm his kit is so beautiful. Beautiful player aswell of course!

  • Playa

  • Anybody know what song he,

  • hey, does anyone know what kind of fills he is doing 2:36 - 2:47 ? The first one seems kind of like a triplet thing and the second maybe like a 6 stroke roll? does anyone know exactly?

  • Comparing Matt Greiner to Gavin? Matt a genius? If Matt is the Einstein of drumming then Gavin makes him look like Forrest Gump.

  • That snare is so small!!!! Yet it sounds so deep and powerful... How can it do that? Do you suppose it has much rebound?

  • Matt Greiner> Gavin Harrison> Neil Peart> Jeff Portnoy

  • @CrimsonTheArmada matt greiner? y

  • @demonof90

why? seriously? I know he's a metalcore drummer but I think he's more skilled than gavin, lookup " Matt Greiner The 11th hour"

  • @CrimsonTheArmada im not trying to be rude but matt greiner is shit. he isn't even remotely technical. should remake that list with matt greiner not even showed.

  • @CrimsonTheArmada 2 different musical styles dude. Gavin and Matt are both geniuses in their own way.

  • @CrimsonTheArmada nah dude The 11th Hour is a sick song but Gavin is far more skilled than Greiner. Death Metal is easier than this

  • Peart is phenomenal. Portnoy is far better OUTSIDE of DT. But Gavin Harrison is just incredible at finding that groove in chaotic time signatures. And then just blow your mind with the fills in there.

  • I wouldn't say Peart's the best drummer ever. I don't see how any one can make the claim of best drummer EVER. However, he has recorded some of the best rock tracks EVER. To me that's the difference. And oh yeah Gavin F'n ROCKS! Dude has some of the most impressive fills I've ever heard.

  • 2:20 i think thats the first time ive ever heard gavin laugh :D

  • Maybe I haven't heard the right Rush songs, but I don't get how people can say Peart is the "best drummer ever" when there are guys like this, Portnoy, and the guys from Opeth and Mastodon around.

  • @thejoker1393 Peart's the best hands down...watch his live drum solos.

  • @thejoker1393 Peart is great, but not the best drummer ever, Portnoy is good but very overrated just a basher

who is very good at odd groupings and cool time signatures.

  • @thejoker1393 some people are ignorant. one can certainly say peart is their favorite drummer. thats fine, because its a personal opinion. then, without any regard to other drummers in the world, they say "hes the best." theres no such thing as "best" in music because its an abstract art form with so many variations. every drummer is different, and to rate them in such a way is fucking retarded. all of these back and forth arguments about whos the "best" is a waste of time.

  • The bass pattern at 2:48 sounds like Bleed by Meshuggah xD Love Gavin Harrison, such an inspirational guy

  • @LittleWildman it's the same pattern on the feet I think.

  • I'm embarrassed that I've played for so long and not discovered Gavin. Thank you for posting!

  • Gavin is my hero!!! The best one!!! :)

  • Who made that Unsettled song? It sounds great.

  • @DragonFlopp it belongs to the Album"Drop", a collaboration between Gavin and 05Ric , check it out, if possible get the Circles album too. Cheers!

  • @EliasUlrich1984 Thanks very much for answering my question.

  • @DragonFlopp , anytime my friend!! keep on recommending this :D cheers!

  • 2:48 meshuggah - bleed =D

  • @Skyradon Maybe. Or maybe vis a verse, or maybe it's just a common ostinato.

  • @Skyradon That's Futile by Porcupine Tree the band he's in lol.

  • I heard he was good but i didn't know he was this good

  • If i'm half as good as this guy one day i would be the happiest guy in the world :)

  • 3:25 LOVE

  • Gavin is a creative genius. He steps out of the box every chance he gets to create rhythmic approaches that are not only appropriate with the song, but will have you step back and think "what just happened." Being a "technical death metal drummer" only pertains to understanding a few fine details in drumming and mastering them. Writing is in black and white because the music is so defined.

  • 2:48 I bet he's a Tomas Haake fan. lol

  • @ransisua

thomas haake is a fan of him

  • 1:49-2:02 is the smoothest beat ever.

  • who cares about technical abilities? when will people learn that it's all about the COMPOSITION? so it doesn't matter what a "technical death metal" drummer can do as long as they make crappy songs.

  • Oh my goodness, those toms..

  • "hey look, we can play note in sixteenth. check this out!..."

to stupid speedy gonzales' playing ultra-mega-uber speed metal.

  • Gavin has his own sound. Musically, he's one of the best. I'm not just saying that because I like his drumming, he really is one of the best. Go check out the books he wrote. Look at those parts. Talk about technical.

  • Oné thing that became clear to me is that quite often when the rest of the band is being a smartarse (strange timings) he is often steady and straight and then they often change roles. He is a very musical drummer who uses his kit as a musical instrument and not just a means of keeping rhythm and time which I think as a non drummer but musician is a plague of many drummers. It is a privilege to listen to these drummers and also comparison is pointless as some people have pointed out.

  • Is that the bleed-beat at 2:48?

  • @AcKyrre Called herta, and I believe it's quite similar to bleed indeed....

  • seriously you can't compare gavin to another drummer and why are you even trying to? no one sounds like him and thats what makes him unique.

  • It is a privilege to be able to hear all of these elite drummers on You Tube and all that can be learned from them. Drummers - how about less time arguing and comparing professional musicians and more time listening to what each of these unique & elite players are teaching you. Take the gifts that are given to you and learn from them.

  • @DropkickTheDinosaur So you are in one of the right directions..

  • no Bro....idiots look up to joey jordison and Lars....just be your self and let other people wish they were you instead....its just you and your drums...thats all ya need =]

  • @goodkaufman2112 Amen to that brotha!

  • @goodkaufman2112 Wow, im a professional drummer and i think youre comment is one of the best ive seen here.....All those stupid people.......Just be yourself wether your good or bad....Just play

  • Gavin can roll with one hand 30 times better than i could ever imagine rolling with two hands.

  • The man builds a house in 10 minutes.

  • @rlevanony - Well Said!

  • What Zappa song is that?

  • wanna hear those drums without the mics. :D

  • @4revdrummer 'Futile' by Porcupine Tree

  • does anyone know what song that is at 2:22?

  • does anyone know what song that is at 2:22?

  • 2:59-3:12

The reason Dream Theater sucks now.

  • @senorvolasco ahh shut up a hole

you're the reason technical metal sucks

"hey sound guy!? turn me up, i want everyone to hear my 16/7 triplets quadraptor asswad groove."

  • @michaelmcmichaelson I'm agreeing to what Gavin Harrison is saying, and saying that Dream Theater sucks now because they do the opposite, as in what you're implying that I do. Chiiiillllll.

  • He's SOOO right when odd time signatures must have a musical reason, while many bands just use them for "look, we can play odd time signature 19/16 we're so awesome!" while it adds nothing to the song, rather making it nothing more than annoying. The Sound of Muzak has one of the most best integrated odd time signatures around imo.

  • 3:10

  • That's the best sounding kit I have ever heard. Got damn it... it doesn't get any better than this!

  • @omri538: The song in the beginning is "Centered" off the album "Drop" by Gavin Harrison and 05Ric.

  • what is the name of the song in the begining?

  • he is the new Dream Theater's Drummer!!!!

  • @Trebeard really?

  • @lucasathus @allmetaliswelcome

No he's not, and I hope he's not going to be.

  • @windriderrr Why do you say that?

If anything I would think getting someone like Gavin Harrison on board would be the inspirational kick in the pants Dream Theater needs to get back on track.

  • @Nubnut I think Gavin Harrison wouldn't fit in Dream Theater. He's going way beyond metal in his playing, and more importantly, way beyond Portnoy's playing.

Don't get me wrong, I love the guy (Harrison), but I don't think I'd like to see him popularized through Dream Theater. IMO he's better off with King Crimson & Porcupine Tree.

PS : he's getting compared to Portnoy way too much as of now, him playing with DT would only make it worse.

It's not like we don't already know who's the best!
