Don't you think such songs exaggerate the actions of dictators? I am in no way saying that Chiang Kai-Shek should not be allocated the respect he deserves, but considering that this song was made during his lifetime, it sort of contradicts the whole idea of a democracy - which the ROC wasn't to begin with.

@ragabara Song was actually made after his death. No person in their right minds would allow for a memorial song to be made whilst they were still alive. Considering Chiang's typical traditional Chinese background, to have a memorial song be written whilst he was still alive is almost certainly taboo; writing the song while he's still alive is like trying to condemn him to his death.

As for dictator or not, Imma need some examples to start deliberating with.

@LiouTao well im no expert.. i just know what ive read and heard from others on taiwan. they told me that it looks like he would be re-elected. i do know that he is trying to maintain stable relations with the mainland. for the dpp to keep demanding independence would be unstable and dangerous. i dont think that will happen. i could be wrong though. dont demoralize yourself. be more hopeful. i think youll be better off with pres. ma then anyone from the dpp. patience instead of the blues

@bigblondman1 As long as nothing happens, the KMT generally will win. As for Ma re-elected as president, that's not necessarily going to happen. He's got in-party problems where like half the party wants him replaced with a different candidate. Lucky for him, nobody's stepped up to challenge him yet; but then it's still quite a while before May 4th comes around.

@bigblondman1 If nobody steps up to run as the KMT candidate by May 4, he will be automatically be declared the candidate of the KMT. If someone does step up, then there will be a primary.

@LiouTao domestically i dont know what pres. ma is doing. but i believe hes trying to either transition or acquire support for the r.o.c. on the mainland through diplomatic and economic means. at least that could be his intention. but when youre dealing with the commies you simply cannot trust them. they appear to be cooperative but ultimately they just want all the power. if the dpp won it would be worse. when they were in they just agitated the commies more. dpp are not the answer.

@bigblondman1 I didn't say the DPP are the answer, I'm saying Ma's not doing enough, he's playing too much diplomacy with the DPP and the CCP rather than conforming with party ideology. As a result, many KMT has stopped supporting him. They don't support the DPP or the CCP, of course not, they just support someone else besides Ma to lead the party.

@bigblondman1 I didn't say you placed words in my mouth, I have no ill feel against you. It's to be expected that outsiders don't know what's going on within the party. Basically, Ma became a bit too moderate, he's doing stuff trying grab votes from the DPP, and it's pushing away many blues. There's also those who feel he's not doing enough to revert the damage done by the DPP, and those who feel he's getting too close with the reds. There's also inter-faction competition within the party, etc.

@bigblondman1 But as for with the middle voters, some are okay with Ma, but for those who are not, generally it is because they aren't exactly happy with Ma's performance. His performance hasn't been too well, he's too young and inexperienced, that's the reason why. He's a good man, I'll give him that, but when you put a good but incapable man into power, you're going to have problems.

@LiouTao well, i can tell you that when john f. kennedy was elected he was under the same criticism of being too young and inexperienced. in some ways that was true. but he stood up to the soviets in cuba as good as anyone else would. frankly we had problems with all pres. young or old so age isnt always the issue. its also education. bush sr. and jr. were too stupid to realize the plight of the majority. or perhaps just purposely ignorant republicans here are about big business not people.

The KMT won't split again, more likely the other blue parties will remerge with the KMT. Lesson was learned, won't happen again.

@bigblondman1 It is when it's the only answer. The Reds won't go down without blood shed, no way they'd dissolve like the Soviets did. They saw what happened with the Soviets, and they are doing everything they can to prevent the same thing from happening to them. Their support is strong, but so is dissent on mainland. If I have to guess, war will start with a series of uprisings within the mainland.

@LiouTao you certainly paint a rather gloomy picture of it all. i sure hope it wont come to that but you may be right. also, perhaps its my age showing. im much older than you. i would state it a little differently. war is never the answer. unfortunately it is a dangerous last resort. the r.o.c. cannot do it by themselves they need the u.s. perhaps other allies as well. ive heard there is much support for the r.o.c. on the mainland. but chinas' military is huge on the ground.

@LiouTao i also wanted to add that bob dylan was in taiwan and in china recently. he did a concert on taiwan and did all of his songs. yet when he went to communist china, they would not allow him to do two songs, 'times they are a changing" and "blowing in the wind". that tells me what paranoid spineless cowards are the communists. they control 1 billion 300 million people. they claim to be so powerful but they are afraid of two songs. how insecure can they be? theres no need to fear cowards.

@bigblondman1 As I've said, it's not 'the kmt', it's 'some'. Also, the majority of the ROC population does not affiliate themselves with a political party, so in the end it's about these independent voters. Anyways, with those in the KMT, they don't want war, of course not, but they don't like it when Ma's trying to reconcile with the greens either. They're also frustrated that Ma hasn't done enough to undo what the Greens had done these past 20 years, etc etc.

@LiouTao ma seems to me to be not naive, but more diplomatic to a fault. he seems to be holding back or just not capable of being as aggressive as he should be. comprimise and reconciliation works both ways. so he shouldnt acquiesce too much. he should perhaps demand more. but im just guessing. we have independent voters here as well. they are the most fickle and indecisive voters on earth. they irritate me. they just keep changing there minds from one side to the other for any reason

@bigblondman1 As I've said, I'm not worried about the independents, KMT under general circumstances will have more support than the DPP. Ma's problem is inside the blue camp, where he's having problems with support, especially those from the PFP and NP.  If he becomes the KMT candidate, he will still receive their votes, but if someone steps up to run against him in the primaries, he's going to have a little problem. I've told you, it's stuff he's done that's not running well with the blues.
